1 Wednesday, September 17, 2008 The Inn at St. John's Plymouth, Michigan PERSPECTIVES ON PAIN... Pain is a universal experience and yet, when it occurs, an intensely personal one. In recent years, understanding pain and improving pain management have been the focus of much study and effort, resulting in new information and better delineation of challenges that require our attention. The 2008 Conference on Pain will explore various perspectives on pain, and by doing so, increase the knowledge base of practicing clinicians. Participants will learn about evidence-based recommendations for the comprehensive management of pain in older adults, including assessment tools for those who suffer cognitive impairments. Complex issues such as managing breakthrough pain, the intersection of pain with depression and anxiety, and understanding the financial burdens pain can cause will all be explored. This popular conference will provide opportunities to engage in discussions that stimulate critical thinking and develop new perspectives on caring for people with pain. One hour of CE credit in pain management is required for RN/LPN relicensure in Michigan every two years. This program is co-provided by Henry Ford Health System, Michigan State University College of Nursing, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Wayne State University College of Nursing, accredited providers of continuing nursing education by the Michigan Nurses Association, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the Amercian Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation and by the University of Michigan Health System s Educational Services for Nursing, an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants who attend the entire program will receive 5.25 contact hours. Continuing education contact hours for Social Work have been applied for.

Dr. Herr s program of research is in pain management in older adults with emphasis in assessment strategies, improving practices through translation research and end of life care. She served on the 2002 American Geriatric Society persistent pain guideline expert panel and on the Board of Directors for the American Pain Society (APS) and the American Society for Pain Management Nursing. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society. She presents nationally and internationally on strategies for improving assessment and management of pain in elders and has numerous publications in this area. Dr. Herr is currently Principal Investigator of the Cancer Pain in Elders: Promoting Evidence- Based Practices in Hospices grant funded by the National Cancer Institute. April Hazard Vallerand, PhD, RN, FAAN is currently an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at Wayne State University. Her research interests are focused on the improvement and maintenance of functional status in patients with chronic pain and the prevention of pain-related disparities. Dr. Vallerand is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She was a member of the American Pain Society panel for the development of Guidelines for the Management of Pain in Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Juvenile Chronic Arthritis and the American Geriatric Society panel for the development of guidelines for the Management of Persistent Pain in Older Persons.In addition, Dr. Vallerand lectures nationally on the management of pain and has published numerous articles on pain and pain control. She has also authored five books on pharmacology for nurses and other health care professionals, including Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, which is in its 10th edition. Dr. Vallerand received her BSN from Mount St. Mary s College in Los Angeles, her MSN from California State University, Los Angeles, her PhD in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Psychosocial Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Linda Vanni, MSN, RN, APRN, BC, NP is currently the Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Karmanos Cancer Center Pain Management Service in Detroit, Michigan. She received her undergraduate nursing degree from Wayne State University and her Masters degree in Nursing from Madonna University. She is a board certified Clinical Specialist through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and a licensed Nurse Practitioner. Linda has been practicing in pain management for the last 18 years. Linda co-authored the American Society of Pain Management Nursing s core curriculum chapter on chronic pain and functions as a graduate nurse preceptor for Madonna and Wayne State Universities. She consults and lectures nationwide. In 2002, Linda received Sigma Theta Tau s Iota Chapter s Excellence in Nursing Practice Award and the Michigan, Detroit Chapter ONS s Advanced Practice Oncology Nurse of the Year Award.
