2 Course Meeting Day, Time, Location SECTION 001 Wednesday, 1:00-2:50pm SECTION 002 Thursday, 1:00-2:50pm A133 Life Sciences Building Course Description This 2 credit course provides key foundational concepts of health care and nursing. Theoretical foundations that frame the art and science of nursing will be introduced with relation to current health care issues. Practical skills and strategies for success in the nursing program and profession will be explored. Objectives At the end of this course, students will: 1. Describe the breadth and variety of roles, professional knowledge, and characteristics integral to a baccalaureate prepared nurse. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of concepts relevant to nursing practice. 3. Examine the development of nursing as a profession. 4. Explain the relationship of nursing to other health professions and the health care system. Required/Suggested Text Cresia, J.L., & Parker, B. (2001). 3 This course will utilize numerous interactive activities including seminar, group discussion, and role play. Large group sessions will include didactic, audio-visual materials, and written examinations/quizzes. Evaluation/Grading Scale Course grade will be based on two examinations, homework and in-class work. Examinations will include assignments, course discussions, and lecture content. The final course grade will weighted as follows: Mid-term examination 30% Final examination 30% Assignments & quizzes 40% The standard College of Nursing grading scale will be utilized % % % % % % % 1.0 <64% 0 Policies A. Attendance Attendance is required for all classes, unless prior arrangements have been made with course faculty. Classes are the

4 entire time scheduled. Any unexcused absence may result in a decrease in the final course grade. C. Homework assignments All assignments will be submitted electronically to the MSU Angel website ( under the Lessons tab, by the date listed in the course calendar at the end of the syllabus. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date. Emergency situations must be discussed with faculty. A healthcare provider s note or documentation may be requested. Do not send messages to faculty through Angel see communication below. D. Quizzes Quizzes will be given throughout the semester. One quiz grade will be dropped from grade calculation at the end of the semester. Quizzes will be posted on Angel website for 5 days following class. Access through click Lessons tab, select quiz. The quizzes are time limited, so open only when available to complete. There is one opportunity to access the quiz. So, it cannot be closed and completed at a later time. The quizzes will open at 8:00am on class day (Wednesday and Thursday) and close 11pm the fifth day (Monday and Tuesday). Quizzes completed one week after the due date will have a one point deduction. No quizzes will be accepted after one week. Quizzes cannot be made-up. Emergency situations must be discussed with faculty. A healthcare provider s note or documentation may be requested. E. Examinations Examinations will be given during course periods. Students arriving late will have the scheduled time for completion of the exam. All students are expected to take examinations on the date scheduled, unless prior arrangements are made with the course faculty. For emergency situations, students are to contact faculty as soon as possible. If unable to contact faculty, call Student Affairs office ( ) and leave a message regarding the reason for absence. It is the student s responsibility to reach faculty as soon as possible following the examination. When warranted, arrangements to take an alternate examination will be made at that time. It is the student s responsibility to arrange make-up examinations. There will be one opportunity for an alternative exam. Alternate exams may use with additional formats (essay, fill in the blank, etc.). Make-up exams are routinely scheduled within one week of the original exam date. Health provider s

5 statements may be required. Questions regarding examination grades must be put forward within two weeks of the exam date. Communication Section faculty can be contacted most directly by or through individual office phone (see page one). Send all electronic communication to faculty through Outlook only. If necessary, appointments may be made individually with faculty to discuss specific concerns. Questions regarding specific content are to be directed to appropriate faculty listed on course calendar. Information, assignments and announcements will be posted electronically on the MSU Angel site for NUR110. Angel will not be used for communication with faculty. Student Faculty Relationship Any concerns or issues that arise should be discussed with lead faculty as soon as possible. They can be reached via or phone listed on first page of syllabus. It is expected that a professional, courteous, positive demeanor will be exhibited to peers, faculty and College of Nursing staff with each encounter. It is expected that you will be on time to class. If for some reason you have to be late or leave early, the course chair should be notified and plans will be made so you will not disturb the entire class. Talking, reading the newspaper and sleeping are unacceptable. Faculty are open to feedback, ideas, and concerns. For in-depth discussions, a scheduled meeting is suggested.
