2 Welcome to the Hampton Suite The Hampton Suite is different to other hospital wards; it is a suite, not a ward. Here the care is delivered by nurses and therapists working together. The person in charge of managing the suite is also a nurse, with the support of a consultant. We expect that you will stay with us for approximately five days, some patients may stay less or a little longer, but this will vary depending on your individual needs. You will have been referred to the Hampton Suite because you only require a minimal amount of medical support, and most of your needs can be met with nursing and therapy based care. 2

3 What will happen whilst you are here The staff at the Hampton Suite will work with you to increase your confidence and competence in daily activities. You will be encouraged to use your skills and daily routines whilst you are on the suite, the same as you would at home. For example, making yourself a cup of tea, or watching your favourite television programme. You will be encouraged to get dressed every day and mobilise around the Suite. We will be working together with you to promote independence to ensure you are able to maximise your potential to have as full and active a life as possible. Everyone will work together to produce an effective and appropriate individualised realistic plan of care, using a holistic approach, where we treat the entire person, taking into consideration your hopes and expectations and those of your relatives/carers where it is appropriate. Full recovery, feeling happier and more relaxed, can vary from weeks up to many months, and not all of this time will be spent on The Hampton Suite. Discharge arrangements will be focused on your individual needs, some people will need additional support to continue their recovery out of hospital, preferably in their own environment. In some exceptional circumstances, a patient may need to be transferred to one of the medical wards at Leicester Royal Infirmary where more medical input is required. This will only be considered if it is essential to maintain an individual s health and wellbeing. When you first arrive on the suite we will spend time assessing your needs and establishing goals for treatment. 3

4 Involving your family or carers Patients and family are always welcome to approach a staff member with any questions. One family member will need to be identified as the main contact for sharing information about your care and progress (with your consent). Discharge plans will be agreed with all concerned when the rehabilitation process has reached a plateau or your needs can be met in the community. Visiting Times Visiting times are as follows: 11:00am to 8:00pm, 7 days a week Although the number of visitors is not restricted, we would ask you recognise that large numbers of people can pose a hazard due to the limited space available. Visitors are asked to ring the bell at the entrance to the suite and wait to be admitted. We may not always be able to answer the bell straight away due to being involved in patient care. Flexible visiting may be pre-arranged due to family circumstances. Please ask the nurse in charge. 4

5 What to bring with you Upon admission to the unit you may want to bring the following items: Clothing (day and night) Outdoor coat Well-fitting shoes/trainers Toiletries (including bath/shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razor, shaving foam, denture adhesive and pot if required, comb, etc.) Please keep personal belongings to a minimum and only bring valuable items into the suite if absolutely necessary. Mobile phones are allowed in the suite, although you are asked to use them with respect. The taking of photographs and video is discouraged and photographs of other patients and staff is prohibited without their consent. You are asked to make arrangements with relatives/carers for personal laundry to be done at home. 5

6 The medical team The medical team comprises of a Consultant, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and doctors at different levels of training. A medical round takes place every morning. The staff will gather together and discuss the needs of each patient in the suite. The Consultant is on the suite Monday to Friday mornings for around two hours and will see each patient on their first working day; they will also see patients the team asks them to. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner will do regular rounds. Medical cover is from 9:00 am 5:00 pm weekdays, excluding bank holidays. If any medical problems arise out of these hours, patients are referred to the doctors on call at Leicester Royal Infirmary. 6

7 The nursing and therapy teams The nursing and therapy teams are available to assist and advise on most matters 24 hours a day. On admission, a named nurse or therapist will be assigned to you. The Hampton Suite is an established area for the training of student nurses and other health professionals who may work with you under supervision. The Therapy team at the Hampton Suite includes Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy Support Workers. The Therapy team will identify and agree achievable goals with you and devise a plan to work towards your discharge. The Occupational therapist will assess your daily living skills. These include everyday activities such as washing and dressing, toileting, simple meal preparation and they will encourage you to continue with or develop social activities for when you return home. The Occupational Therapists will work closely with you and your family, and may carry out home visits to assess the environment to which you may return on discharge. If you need equipment for when you get home the Occupational Therapist will order these items. If adaptations to your home are needed, such as a ramp instead of steps, or a shower instead of a bath, the Occupational Therapist will make a referral to Social Services. This will not delay you getting home. 7

8 The nursing and therapy teams (continued) The Physiotherapists will assess you to identify any difficulties that you may have with walking or muscle strength and tone and will plan an appropriate programme of physical therapy; this may be completed within daily activities or individual therapy sessions. Relatives may be encouraged to observe and join in therapy sessions where appropriate. It would be helpful if you could bring with you any aids you are using such as walking aids, wheelchairs and any other splints or appliances that have been given to you. Therapy and Nursing Assistants The assistants work with the therapists and nursing staff on the unit. The assistants will continue treatments already established by the team. Volunteers Some activities may be supported by volunteers, such as hairdressing, hand massages etc. these will be subject to volunteer availability. You may hear the term interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary this refers to the members of the team, and how they work together in order to provide the most effective treatment possible. 8

9 Your daily timetable In the morning you will be given the opportunity to complete your personal care routine by a member of your team. This may be incorporated into your rehabilitation programme. Some treatments will focus on teaching you alternative ways to increase your independence and your ability to carry out daily tasks. Your rehabilitation may include taking an active role in daily household tasks and joining in with group activities. The Suite has lots of on-going activities every day, such as movement to music, arts and crafts, bingo etc. These are themed and topics may change. Patients will be encouraged to participate if possible. 9

10 Mealtimes We operate a protected mealtime policy, and do not allow visiting at these times unless it is to assist with the mealtimes. Breakfast Lunch Dinner 8:00am to 09:00am 12:00pm to 1:15pm 5.00pm to 6.00pm There is a selection of meals available each day. Catering staff can be approached if you have any special dietary needs. Some of our patients may need modified diets or fluids for medical reasons. You and your relatives are therefore asked not to give food or drink to other patients in the Suite. If you wish your relatives to bring food in for you, it must be clearly labelled with your name and the date it was brought into the Suite. The food must be easily prepared and stored in accordance with Health and Safety regulations. Food cannot be reheated and will be disposed of when expiry/use by date is reached. It is not the responsibility of staff to prepare patients own food. Dietitians The dietetics department may be contacted if any concerns are raised about weight or dietary intake. If you wish to see the dietitian, please inform staff and a referral will be sent. 10

11 Planning your discharge To ensure a smooth, trouble free discharge, planning for your return home will begin on admission. If it is necessary, you will be referred to a social worker. This will be discussed with you at the time. Discharge needs are assessed on an individual basis. Discharge will always be discussed and planned with you, your relatives/carers and team members. Discharge planning may include plans for day leave or overnight stays at home. If you have on-going rehabilitation needs which can be met in the community or as an outpatient, you will be referred to the appropriate service on discharge. There may be a waiting list for these services. 11

12 Chaplain and Church services The chaplaincy provides religious, spiritual and pastoral care to patients, visitors and staff of all religions and beliefs, including those with no religious belief. The Chaplaincy team includes Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh Chaplains as well as a non-religious Pastoral Carer. The wider team of volunteers also includes Baha'i, Buddhist, Jewish and Jain representatives. The chaplains regularly visit the Hampton Suite and are always happy to see patients or visitors, to offer a 'listening ear'. Please ask a member of staff for more information. General Information Smoking The University Hospitals of Leicester operates a No Smoking policy, which is strictly enforced within all its buildings. Zero tolerance Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity by those they come into contact with. Unacceptable behaviours will invoke the use of the Trust s zero tolerance policy. 12

13 Travel and Parking The Hampton Suite is located on Level 6, Windsor Building (opposite ward 38). The car parks at Leicester Royal Infirmary operate via a pay on foot/ pay on exit method. This means you park up, visit the hospital and on leaving you locate a pay station, insert your card and pay for the time you have been in the car park. Leicester Royal Infirmary car park, which includes the multi-storey, is accessible via Havelock Street and is open 24 hours a day. The car park office is open weekdays from 8am to 4pm. Leicester Royal Infirmary is situated on the southern edge of the Leicester city centre: Infirmary Square Leicester LE1 5WW Leicester buses arrive and depart from the Haymarket Bus Station at the Haymarket Shopping Centre and St. Margaret's Bus Station in Gravel Street, or from the many city centre stops. Both bus stations are about 15 minutes walk from the railway station where there is a stop for the Hospital Hopper, which is a shuttle bus running between the three Leicester's hospitals sites.
