1 St Thérèse of Lisieux Catholic Primary School Date Review Date Responsible Persons September 2017 September 2018 C.Stott INTRODUCTION People at work can suffer injuries or illness, it doesn't matter whether the injury or illness is caused by the work they do. It is important that they receive immediate attention and that an ambulance is called in serious cases. First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones. First aid at work covers the arrangements that need to be made to ensure this happens that is the initial management of any injury or illness suffered at work. It does not include giving tablets or medicines to treat illness. St Therese of Lisieux Catholic Primary School undertakes to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation with regard to the provision of first aid for all employees and ensures best practise by extending the arrangements as far as is reasonably practicable to children and others who may also be affected by our activities. Responsibility for first aid at St Therese of Lisieux Primary is held by the Head teacher. The responsible manager is the Deputy Head Teacher. All first aid provision is arranged and managed in accordance with the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and First Aid in the Workplace Practical Guidance (Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council 2015). All staff have a statutory obligation to follow and co-operate with the requirements of this policy. All our information and guidance concerning First Aid (including accident records and forms) are kept in the cupboard in the office until such time they are archived. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To reduce, through the administering of first-aid, the effects of injury or illness suffered by children, staff and visitors. To have procedures in place so that first-aid provision will be `adequate and appropriate in the circumstances'. This means that sufficient first-aid personnel and facilities should be available, to give immediate assistance to casualties with both common injuries or illness and those likely to arise from specific hazards at work or to summon an ambulance or other professional help. To ensure that clear procedures are in place for the safe storage of first aid equipment, and the recording of incidents in accordance with health and safety guidelines. 1 P a g e

2 PROVISION OF FIRST AID PERSONNEL APPOINTED PERSONS An appointed person is someone who takes charge when someone becomes ill, suffers a minor injury, looks after first aid equipment e.g. restocking after use, or who ensures that an ambulance is called when appropriate. All members of staff are appointed persons but not necessarily first aiders. Members of staff should not give first aid treatment for which they have not been trained. During the school day, many children suffer minor bumps and scrapes in the course of their play in the playground or through other activities. It is normal practice for these to be dealt with by an appointed person during morning play and lunch time; and by the teacher or teaching assistant during lesson time. However, more major injuries need to be immediately referred to a designated school first aider for assessment and care. SCHOOL FIRST AIDERS: Personnel who have attended the relevant first aid training will be known as the school s designated first aiders. Their names are displayed around the school to inform any school user of their role. They will attend refresher courses to keep their qualification up to date and valid every 3 years. In addition, at least one member of staff in EYFS has training in paediatric first aid. Current First Aid personnel is displayed in the school office, staff room and KS1 1 and KS2 cloakroom. PROVISION OF FIRST AID EQUIPMENT FIRST-AID KITS First-aid equipment is kept in a suitably stocked and properly identified first-aid container in the school office, near to hand washing facilities in the WCs outside the office. As a guide*, where no special risk arises, a minimum stock of first-aid items would normally include: ( See Appendix 1) Guidance on First Aid for School (DFEE 0 The contents of first-aid containers are examined every half term and restocked as soon as possible after use. Sufficient supplies should be held in a back-up stock on site. Care is taken to discard items safely after the expiry date has passed. All first-aid containers are identified by a white cross on a green background. TRAVELLING FIRST-AID KITS First-aid kits for travelling workers would typically contain a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid six individually wrapped sterile plasters (hypoallergenic plasters can be provided if necessary) two individually wrapped triangular bandages, preferably sterile 2 P a g e

3 two safety pins one large sterile un-medicated dressing two pair of disposable gloves. Contents of mobile kits should be kept stocked from the back-up stock at the home site. DESIGNATED ROOMS Outside the school office and the disabled WC are the designated areas for first aid for treatment, sickness and administering of first aid during the school day, with stage area outside designated as the first aid point for treatment, sickness and the administering of minor first aid during lunch. First aid areas have the following facilities: First aid kits Chairs FIRST AID SEQUENCE OF EVENTS In the event of an accident the first aider/appointed person takes charge of the first aid emergency treatment commensurate with their training. HYGIENE AND INFECTION CONTROL All staff should take precautions to avoid infection and must follow basic hygiene procedures. Staff should have access to single-use disposable gloves and hand washing facilities, and take care when dealing with blood or other body fluids and disposing of dressings or equipment. ASSESSMENT OF THE INJURED OR SICK PERSON Following their assessment of the injured person, a designated First Aid personnel are to administer appropriate first aid and make a judgement as to whether there is a requirement to call an ambulance. (If unsure at any time the first aider will call NHS Choices for further advice) THE FIRST AIDER/APPOINTED PERSON WILL ALWAYS CALL AN AMBULANCE ON THE FOLLOWING OCCASIONS: In the event of a serious injury In the event of any significant head injury In the event of a period of unconsciousness Whenever there is a possibility of a fracture or where this is suspected Whenever the first aider is unsure of the severity of the injury Whenever the first aider is unsure of the correct treatment If an ambulance is called, the caller must speak to the emergency services and give the following information: 1. State what happened 2. The child s name 3. The age of the child 4. Whether the casualty is breathing and/or unconscious 5. The location of the school 3 P a g e

4 RECORDING AND REPORTING ACCIDENTS. In the event of an accident involving a child, where appropriate, it is our policy to always notify parent/carer of their child s accident: If it is considered to be serious (more than minor injury - Minor bumps and scrapes will be reported by the child or class teacher as necessary). Requires first aid treatment Injury to the head Requires attendance at hospital In the event of a child bumping their head or other significant injury, parents will be informed by phone and or a note sent home. All incidents will be recorded in the first aid log with the date, time, nature of injury, first aid given and what happened to the person immediately afterwards e.g. went back to class/ went home etc. Records must be signed and will be kept for 3 years. In the event of a serious accident involving a child or member of staff, the RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) 2013 and LA guidelines will be adhered to. Formal reporting the Regulator, the Health and Safety Executive shall be undertaken on behalf of Services and schools by the Officers within the Health and Safety Unit. It is important that the reporting system is promptly followed, including the completion of the Notification of Accident Form (SP8) in order to facilitate both timely reporting to the Regulator and to enable prompt enquires to be made into the circumstances leading up to the event. The Head teacher will notify Ofsted and local child protection agencies of any serious accident or injury to, or serious illness of, or the death of any child whilst in their care and act on any advice given. TABLETS AND MEDICATIONS First aid at work does not include giving tablets or medicines to treat illness (see Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions Policy September 2017 for further advice). The only exception to this is where aspirin is used as first aid to a casualty with a suspected heart attack in accordance with currently accepted first-aid practice. It is recommended that tablets and medicines should not be kept in the first-aid container. Some workers carry their own medication that has been prescribed by their doctor (eg an inhaler for asthma). If an individual needs to take their own prescribed medication, the first-aider s role is generally limited to helping them do so and contacting the emergency services, as appropriate. PUPILS WITH SPECIAL MEDICAL NEEDS INDIVIDUAL HEALTHCARE PLANS Please refer to Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions Policy October 2014 for further advice. Some pupils have medical conditions that, if not properly managed, could limit their access to education. These children may be: Epileptic Asthmatic Have severe allergies, which may result in anaphylactic shock Diabetic 4 P a g e

5 Such pupils are regarded as having medical needs. Most children with medical needs are able to attend school regularly and, with support from the school, can take part in most school activities. However, school staff may need to take extra care in supervising some activities to make sure that these pupils, and others, are not put at risk. The school follows NHS policy on administering adrenaline through the use of epi-pens. If children who have registered care plans, due to severe allergy reactions and the need to use an epi-pen, suffer an allergic reaction at school, there is an epi-pen clearly marked with the child s name on and antihistamine liquid in school office medical cupboard. Training from the school nurse Clare Roberts in how to administer adrenaline was offered to all staff in September P a g e

6 FIRST AID AT AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS Club leaders should present relevant training to administer first aid and be familiar with school medicines Policy. Club leaders are not expected to administer medication. All club leaders to be aware if any pupils present with existing medical conditions. Club leaders are not to administer first aid if they are not suitably qualified and should be aware of staff members in the school building who will be qualified and the location of the First Aid Kit. There is an orange first aid bag especially for after school clubs which is held in the school office. FIRST AID OUT OF SCHOOL ON TRIPS OR RESIDENTIAL VISITS IN THE EVENT OF CHILDREN NEEDING FIRST AID ON SCHOOL TRIPS: All staff have first aid packs and mobile phones with them. The first aider deals with minor ailments. For major ailments the school is informed and advice sought. Parents/carers are also informed by the school office or teacher in charge of trip. For any incident that the first aider is unsure of, a second opinion from another first aider is sought, or by calling NHS Choices (dial 111). Gloves are ALWAYS worn when treating injuries. Any accident or incident is reported back at school and an incident in school form filled in as soon as possible. A note on the incident is made at the scene. No medication may be given to a child unless prescribed by a doctor signed and dated and a signed letter from parents for consent. An administration of medicine form must be signed and dated by first aider in charge. NO other medication MUST be given by anyone. For any head injuries the school and the parents are informed. If children are sent home, they must be collected by a responsible adult. In the event of a serious incident an ambulance is ALWAYS called. A member of staff will accompany the child in the ambulance, whilst the school contacts the parent/carer and arranges for them to meet the child and staff at the hospital. In the event of parents being unreachable, the contact people on the child s forms will be phoned. RESIDENTIAL VISITS: A qualified First Aider will accompany the children on residential trips. First Aid should only be carried out by qualified First Aiders. All First Aid must be logged for Medical Records. Medicines of any description (including Pain Killers) are NOT to be administered to any child unless they are the designated person responsible and have written signed consent form stating dose and frequency. Class Teachers are usually designated persons on residential. 6 P a g e
