1 Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust Individual (Job) Descriptions for Foundation Year 1 F1 - Cardiology The department The Cardiology department works from a modern (2005) Cardiac Centre with 6 bed Coronary Care Unit, 12 bed CCU step-down ward and adjacent Cardiology department housing investigation facilities and consulting rooms. There are 3 Cardiologists based at St Mary s. All consultants have regular invasive sessions at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, with whom we have close ties for invasive and interventional services. We also have links with Southampton and regularly have students attached to the department from there. Where the is based for the FY1s in Cardiology are ward-based during working hours and are fully supported and supervised by FY2/CMT and SpR colleagues. There are daily consultant ward rounds. There is some involvement with clerking but acute admissions to CCU are generally seen first by the FY2. Patients requiring non-invasive ventilation are sometimes admitted to CCU, and there are often medical outliers. There is daily ward-based teaching, from Consultants and SpRs, and twice weekly protected teaching time. There is opportunity to see cardiac investigations such as echocardiograms and exercise tests in the nearby department. Responsibilities include ward work following the daily rounds, prescribing, and completion of discharge summaries (shared with other junior colleagues). Emphasis is placed on building history-taking skills, recognising cardiac physical signs, ECG interpretation and recognition and treatment of acute ill patients. Participation in clinical audit and clinical presentations is encouraged. Regular spells in the Medical Admissions Unit (MAAU) allow general medical clerking experience alongside that gained in Cardiology. Coronary Care Unit and CCU Step-down ward and MAAU where applicable. There is also a 9-bed day surgical unit, access to a limited number of paediatric beds, and 6 intensive care beds. Stroke Rehabilitation is the process of assisting a person disabled by stroke to return to an optimal level of health, activity such as walking and participation such as employment within the limits of the persisting stroke impairment.
