1 POSITION DETAILS: POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: ECT Coordinator REPORTS TO: Clinical Team Leader (MHSOP Community) LOCATION: Auckland City Hospital AUTHORISED BY: Nurse Director DATE: 12/2/2018 PRIMARY FUNCTION: To coordinate care for all Auckland District Health Board ECT service users. To provide specialist nursing care to all Auckland District Health Board ECT service users. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Key Result Area Expected Outcomes/Performance Indicators The ECT Coordinator is Advocating on behalf of patients having received ECT, responsible for the overall running their family and friends of the ECT service. Informing patients and their family/carers about all aspects Principal functions of the ECT of ECT in conjunction with the treating team coordinator include Providing information and education to hospital staff, community-based staff and students Educating staff about the importance of informed consent Participating, as appropriate, in ECT training for nursing and medical staff Encouraging administrative and quality improvement activities that promote the efficient running of the ECT service Maintaining accurate statistical information and reports for service evaluation and research Promoting compliance with the Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation Encouraging professional standards Coordinating nursing practices throughout the delivery of ECT Liaising with anaesthetic, theatre, recovery and transit staff to support quality care Ensure routine checking of the ECT device (including servicing at least annually), required equipment, medication and other supplies. Coordinating of treatment sessions: booking theatre time, producing and distributing patient lists, booking of agency nurses as required (with authorisation) Provide educational and emotional support to service user and family/carer Assess the pre-treatment plan and the service user s physical state and functional ability prior to ECT. This includes: o Checking there has been no recent change in health status o Checking that routine observations (heart rate, blood pressure, temperature) have been measured prior to treatment, and in the case of

2 diabetic patients, a blood sugar level o Checking fasting and voiding status o Checking that all legal documents have been signed and are valid o Checking that the appropriate consent papers have been signed o Assessing the service user s status concerning safety, mobility, orientation o Briefly assessing the service user s mental state Preparing and monitoring the service user during treatment. This includes: o Meeting the service user in the waiting area, and bringing them to the treatment area o Providing comfort and reassurance before, during and after procedure o Assisting the treating ECT medical officer with the preparation and delivery of the treatment and the clinical tasks required o Providing support to the anaesthetist and anaesthetic support staff and required o Ensuring that appropriate Time Out checklist is undertaken o Assisting the anaesthetic team in the care of the unconscious service user and subsequent transfer to the recovery area Assisting with service user recovery: o Taking responsibility for ensuring that the patient has re-orientated to time, place and person, and is fit to return to the ward or be discharged home o Liaising with other ADHB staff who will be taking over care of service user following treatment o Taking due care in ensuring that patient privacy, respect and dignity is maintained at all times Specific activities and responsibilities of the ECT Coordinator include: 1. Before ECT: Arranging interpreters for non-english speaking patients and carers. Coordinating ECT lists, accounting for clinical need. Ensuring patients receive adequate food and drink after treatment. Ensuring all transit, medical, nursing, and administrative staff are present. Ensuring good communication with all staff regarding service users clinical needs. Ensuring that specific patient consent has been obtained before students and non-clinical staff attend treatments. Welcoming all patients presenting for treatment, and confirm that clinical and legal documentation has been finalised. Facilitate the preparation of the paperwork required for ECT 2. After ECT: Ensuring safe transfer of the patient to the staff member responsible for recovery.

3 MATTERS WHICH MUST BE REFERRED TO (INSERT TITLE HERE) Authorities: Ensuring ECT documentation is completed. Ensuring cleaning, sterilising (as required) and restocking of the treatment area after a list is completed. Ensuring all team members are supported, especially recovery and transit staff who will remain on duty after the ECT team has departed. Ensuring that inpatients return safely to the ward and outpatients, on leaving the unit, have been accompanied by a responsible adult who can provide continuing supervision for up to 24 hours Checking that medical staff review service users regularly during the course of ECT. Person Specification Education Qualifications Essential Desired Professional New Zealand registration as a comprehensive or psychiatric nurse, or a medical practitioner with vocational qualifications in psychiatry Current Annual Practicing Certificate Has attended recognised ECT course/workshop prior to commencing role as ECT nurse Attends ECT course/workshop at least every 5 years while remains in ECT nurse role PDRP Level 4 or equivalent Experience/Knowledge Minimum of 3 years post registration experience. A strong interest in the provision of ECT. Knowledge of relevant legislation including MH Act, PPP&R Act and Privacy Act Evidence of educational development Mental health inpatient or Community experience. Recent experience in the provision of ECT. Knowledge of relevant ECT protocols and practices. Experience coronary care,

4 Knowledge of ECT protocol. Incorporates the principles of recovery into practice Experience managing acute medical emergencies. Extensive knowledge of mental illness and treatment interventions A knowledge of mental and physical conditions that can be treated with ECT: Clinical Depression, Schizophrenia, Mania, Catatonia, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Familiarity with assessment and management of physical conditions that can affect ECT (e.g. raised intracranial pressure, COPD, GORD, hypertension, diabetes, epilepsy, obesity) At least 3 years post registration experience in a clinical setting. ICU, or recovery Advanced recovery and life support skills. Ability to work across departments/services or clinical areas where there is a lack of shared clinical skill and comprehension. Personal Characteristics High standard of verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team. Able to maintain good professional relationships and be respectful of other team members skills. Excellent clinical skills in management of clients with both acute mental health and medical presentations.
