1 NursingCARE Current Affairs, Research & Education in the Faculty of Nursing Giddens Visit Welcome to all new and returning staff and students to the new academic year. Dr. Giddens (second from right) with members of the Curriculum Development and Faculty Development Committees. Dr. Jean Giddens is Professor and Executive Dean at the College of Nursing, Health Sciences Center, University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque. Dr. Giddens has been involved with nursing education since 1984 and her teaching experience includes nursing programs in New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado. Dr. Giddens research interests are in nursing education and critical thinking. For more than 15 years, she also has been actively writing textbooks, workbooks, and developing electronic media for nursing students and nurses for continuing education. She is author of Development of a Concept-based Undergraduate Curriculum, and The Neighbourhood, an innovative teaching platform for undergraduate nursing education. Dr. Giddens visit to the Faculty was organized by the Curriculum Development and Faculty Development Committees. While at the Faculty, Dr. Giddens presented two public lectures: Concept Based Teaching and Learning, and Teaching with Virtual Communities. A video of the sessions is available from Carol Enns. Announcement Dr. Lesley Degner is Acting Associate Dean, Research, and Director, Manitoba Centre for Nursing and Health Research, from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012, while Dr. Diana Clarke is on sabbatical. September 2011
2 MCNHR Summer Internship Program Between May and August, the MCNHR ran its Summer Internship Program for a second year. The Summer Internship Program was piloted in 2010 with funding from the Faculty of Nursing Endowment Fund. The program provides the opportunity for undergraduate nursing students to be gainfully employed while engaging them in student learning, scientific inquiry and scholarship through one-on-one faculty-intern research mentorships. Our three summer interns, Angela Miller, Denae Warkentin and Alison Kirk received excellent research training and experience through their engagement in several research projects and attendance in over 15 professional development and training sessions. Angela Summer interns (l-r): Angela Miller, Denae Warkentin, & Alison Kirk Miller worked with Dr. Beverley Temple on several projects including Nurses Perceptions of Use of Evidence in Practice: Influencing Factors and Implementation of Pain Assessment Tools on Medical and Surgical Nursing Units. Alison Kirk provided supported to Donna Martin and Roberta Woodgate for their project A Family Health Needs Assessment with a First Nations Community using Critical and Indigenous Methodologies. Denae Warkentin worked closely with Marie Edwards and Susan McClement on two projects Ethics and the Interface Between Long-term Care and Emergency Settings and Exploring Ethical Practice in Palliative Home Care Using Appreciative Inquiry. Denae Warkentin also provided valuable assistance to Elaine Mordoch for the studies How Do Service Providers Perceive Parents with Mental Illness and their Children and Perceptions of Adults Who Have Grown Up With A Parent With A Mental Illness Angela, Denae and Alison also provided outstanding research assistance including literature searches, poster development, data entry and analysis in supporting over 50 faculty requests for research services. Thank-you to all faculty that participated in the summer internship program through requests for research support. Special thanks to our dedicated faculty mentors (Donna Martin, Marie Edwards, Elaine Mordoch and Bev Temple) for making this year s Summer Internship Program a huge success! Finally, a big thank-you to our summer interns, Angela, Denae and Alison for all their outstanding work. submitted by Diane Cepanec New Undergraduate Student Orientation All newly admitted undergraduate students attended a mandatory orientation session on August 31 or September 1. The orientation started with breakfast, courtesy of the Nursing Student Association. The full day sessions included a briefing on policies and procedures, opportunity for students to order their uniforms, name tags and crests, orientation to the skills labs and sessions with the Faculty s English Instructor and Nursing Bibliographer. 2
3 Student Poster Presentation Congratulations to Elizabeth Hiebert and Shannon Raitt for their poster presentation at the The Art, Science and Diversity of Psychiatric Nursing Conference in Tucson, Arizona from March 29 April 2, Elizabeth and Shannon are registered nurses enrolled in the Faculty of Nursing s BPRN Program. These nurses presented a poster entitled, Legal and ethical implications for emergency room nurses: Voluntary versus involuntary status in mental health patients. The poster was an offshoot from their completed assignment in a BPRN course about teaching and learning. In this poster, Elizabeth and Shannon shared their proposal about an educational program for emergency room (ER) nurses with psychiatric nurses from around the world. As mental health nurses working in rural and urban ERs in Manitoba, Elizabeth and Shannon identified that many ER nurses expressed that they were uncomfortable caring for patients with mental health disorders. From their practice, Elizabeth and Shannon identified that some ER nurses lacked knowledge about the Mental Health Act and its implications to nursing practice. The proposed Lunch and Learn sessions may be easily transposed in any clinical area to facilitate quality care provision to patients experiencing mental health disorders. Our students continue to amaze us! submitted by Donna Martin Sneakers in Motion 3 Sixteen members of the Faculty put their leg muscles and sneaker to work when they participated in the University s annual Sneakers in Motion Day. The event is hosted by the University of Manitoba and Bison Recreation Services to kick off the Summer Active recreational program to promote vibrant, healthy living and quality of life. Participants were led by staff from Recreation Services in a warm-up session followed by an entertaining walk around the Fort Garry Campus. A healthy lunch is served after the walk and prizes were awarded for attendance and costumes. Congratulations to Dr. Diana Clarke on winning the grand prize of a lululemon outfit. As part of the Summer Active program, teams of staff members also participated in a bocce ball tournament. A total of eight teams of two participated in the tournament. Unfortunately, bad weather prevented the teams from completing the tournament, so we are unable to announce who the winning team is.
4 University of Manitoba Students Participate in Treaty Days in Fisher River, Manitoba Sarah Lazar, an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Human Ecology, and Alison Kirk, a nursing student, were invited to participate in the Treaty Day celebrations in Fisher River, Manitoba on July 28, Sarah and Alison set up an information booth about family health studies being conducted by Dr. Donna Martin and Dr. Roberta Woodgate from the Faculty of Nursing. Along with many families from Fisher River, Sarah and Alison visited all the educational booths at these celebrations. Approximately 20 booths were set up in the open-air arena. The booths and posters provided community members with information about environmental health and a new recycling program, water and road safety, town planning, cancer screening programs and community resources available to promote physical and mental health. Many families stopped by to read and talk about the research being conducted by the Faculty of Nursing. To conclude the event, a celebratory feast was held. We are extremely proud of the community engagement and educational initiatives being conducted by our students! submitted by Donna Martin Dr. Margaret Elder Hart Distinguished Visitor On May 3, the Margaret Elder Hart Distinguished Visitor Committee welcomed Dr. Gabor Maté to the Faculty. Dr. Maté has practiced as a family practitioner for twenty years and served as the Medical Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital for seven years. He is the author of several books on childhood development, adolescent mental health, and diverse approaches to parenting, was in the Faculty to give a public lecture titled From Addictions to Cancer: Stress, Health, and the Mind/Body Unity. He also held three conversations on addiction, parent/child and adolescent mental health, and mind/body connection. All sessions were standing room only. Attendees included staff and students from the Faculty, the University, and health related professionals from the community. The Committee thanks everyone for their support for this event. Please contact Elaine Mordoch, Chair of the committee at Elaine_Mordoch@umanitoba.ca to provide suggestions for the Committee to consider for the event. 4
