Although most prescriptions are now written for pre-manufactured medications, compounding is still available through specialty pharmacies which have the proper materials and pharmacists with the skill and knowledge to formulate individual compounds. The ability to compound drugs gives the physician and patient the potential advantage of individualizing the preparation of the drug, tailoring the dosage, and many times the delivery method to the individual patient s needs. Many physicians are still reluctant to use compounding prescriptions due gaps in their own lack of knowledge and concerns about the purity and safety of the compounded drugs. Recent concerns about the safety of compounded drugs has received wide attention following an outbreak of meningitis in patients using a compounded formulation of one of these compounds. Most physicians are unaware of the fact that certain compounding pharmacies are accredited by national organizations, and must follow strict guidelines for the preparations. This CME online activity is designed to familiarize physicians with this process, as well as to understand how accreditation is achieved and regulated. The ability to distinguish an accredited compounding pharmacy, as well as the advantages it provides in accuracy and safety will be of value to prescribing physicians and patients alike. 2 Intended Audience Physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses and pharmacy technicians. Educational Objectives After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to: Discussing what is compounding? Identifying why do we need it? Identifying how is compounding regulated? Assessing the methods used for quality assurance for compounding pharmacies Identifying organizations which measure quality assurance for compounding pharmacies Distinguishing the difference between accredited and non-accredited compounding pharmacies Examine potential advances in the treatment of breast cancer Accreditor Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest The Institute for Medical Education (IME) adheres to all IMQ/CMA/ACCME Essential Areas, Standards and Policies.
