5 Unit 13 Unit 14 Final Exam Budgeting Productivity Change Quality improvement and safety Measuring outcomes Planning succession Comprehensive Final Exam PART IV: PURPOSE AND NEED 1. Explain the department s rationale for developing and proposing the course. This course contributes to the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to the nursing role of designer/manager/coordinator of care identified by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in the document The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which accredits baccalaureate programs in nursing, uses the Essentials as accreditation standards. a. This is not a general education course. b. If the course or some sections of the course may be technology delivered, explain why. To maximize accessibility to the Nursing Program by adult students who often are working full-time, as well as managing other responsibilities such as family obligations. 2. Justify the level of the course and any course prerequisites, co-requisites, or registration restrictions. This course is placed in the first semester of the senior year and builds upon limited knowledge gained in the basic nursing program related to leadership and management. The placement enables the professional nursing student to assume the role of designer/manager/coordinator of care identified by the AACN. The course integrates nicely with NUR 4203, The Healthcare System in Professional Nursing which is scheduled in the same semester. NUR 3103 is prerequisite or co-requisite to the course to enable students to appreciate the role of the professional nurse in the health care system and policy development. 3. If the course is similar to an existing course or courses, justify its development and offering. There are no similar courses at EIU a. If the contents substantially duplicate those of an existing course, the new proposal should be discussed with the appropriate chairpersons, deans, or curriculum committees and their responses noted in the proposal. This course does not substantially duplicate the contents of an existing course. b. Cite course(s) to be deleted if the new course is approved. If no deletions are planned, note the exceptional need to be met or the curricular gap to be filled. 5

6 No course is to be deleted if this course is approved. 4. Impact on Program(s): This is an undergraduate course that will be a core requirement for all RN to BS nursing majors. a. For undergraduate programs, specify whether this course will be required for a major or minor or used as an approved elective. This course will be required for the major. b. For graduate programs, specify whether this course will be a core requirement for all candidates in a degree or certificate program or an approved elective. This is an undergraduate program. PART V: IMPLEMENTATION 1. Faculty member(s) to whom the course may be assigned: A faculty member from the EIU RN to BS in Nursing program will teach this course. 2. Additional costs to students: There are no additional costs anticipated. 3. Text and supplementary materials to be used (Include publication dates): American Psychological Association. (2001). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (5 th ed.). Washington, DC: Author. Huber, D. (2005). Leadership and nursing care management (3 rd ed.). St. Louis: Saunders. PART VI: COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER A community college course will not be judged equivalent to this course. PART VII: APPROVALS Date approved by the Nursing Program: 10/04/07 Date approved by the College of Sciences Curriculum Committee: 10/19/07 Date approved by CAA: 11/1/07 6
