1 Catawba College Nursing Department NURS 4511: Nursing Capstone Practicum Course Syllabus Creation date: July 15, 2015 Revised November 16, 2017 Instructor: Racquel Ingram, PhD, RN Contact information: Shuford Science Building 102 (704) Office hours: Tuesdays at 5:00 pm Course Description: This practicum course will build on the concepts and knowledge gained from previous nursing courses allowing for the application of theories and concepts associated with nursing leadership, nursing research, and management of care. A clinical practicum will enhance these skills. Credit Hours: 5 Pre-reqs/Co-reqs: (Prerequisite: Admission to RN-BSN option; NURS 3301, NURS 3302, NURS 3303, NURS 3306, NURS 3511, NURS 4202, NURS 4306, and NURS 4405) Meeting Days/Times/Location: Every other Tuesday per SEGS Block 5 Schedule Shuford Science Building 201 Textbook and Other Course Resources: Required: The student is expected to utilize previous nursing texts that were specifically assigned to the courses throughout the RN-BSN curriculum. The student will also utilize evidence-based resources including the Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code of Ethics, and additional literature or research which supports nursing practice. Recommended: American Psychological Association. (APA, 2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association. (6 th ed.). Washington, D.C: APA

2 This course is web-based through Blackboard. Students are required to use the Blackboard course shell to obtain course announcements, access and submit assignments, post discussions, dialogue with peers, review grades, etc. It is recommended that students access Blackboard frequently for updates. Attendance Policy: Regular class attendance is required to meet the course learning outcomes. This is an online course and attendance is determined by actively posting in the discussion threads at least twice per week during the class sessions as defined by the syllabus. In accordance with College policy, any student missing more than 25% of the scheduled class meetings may be assigned a failing grade for the course. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor prior to an absence for possible arrangements at the instructor s discretion. Students are referred to the Catawba College Catalog for details. Late Work Policy: Assignments should be submitted on time. Reliable computer access is assumed and is not an excuse for missed deadlines. Blackboard can be accessed 24 hours, 7 days per week from any computer, on or off campus, through Catawba.edu. Computer services can be reached by telephone at Computer problems do not negate the students responsibility to submit assignments on time. Late work may be accepted at the discretion of the professor, no more than two times during the block for extreme circumstances; but the work will be penalized one letter grade per day that it is late. Prior notice of late work to the professor increases the chances that it will be accepted. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Combine research, evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and inter-profession collaboration when determining care choices and outcomes for an individual with alterations in health, or when engaging in health systems improvement 2. Formulate holistic care when devising patient-specific interventions 3. Organize theories and knowledge from nursing science, arts, and technology when implementing interventions

3 4. Support provision and promotion of health in selected health care settings by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation 5. Manage ethical use of technology and information systems to discover, retrieve, and analyze information for decision making and safe nursing practice 6. Plan collaborative leadership activities and effective interdisciplinary communication amongst the health care team to provide workable solutions in rapidly changing health care systems 7. Comply with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses Methods of Instruction may involve the following: Lectures, webinars, online discussions, peer exercises, individual and group classroom experiential application exercises, case studies, reflective writing assignments, and video analysis Evaluation Methods: Grading Scale Numerical Ranges Letter Grade Grade Point Average A B C 2.0 (minimum passing grade) D Below F 0 Practicum Pass/Fail N/A A letter grade of C or better a grade of PASS for the clinical practicum are required to successfully complete this course. Obtain and submit required documentation as specified by the clinical agency i.e. CPR card, Proof of insurance, North Carolina nursing license verification, etc. Learning Activities, Assignments (online interactive) Select a clinical practice facility and preceptor to explore how the organization or facility approaches evidence-based practice, nursing leadership, nursing research, and management of care. One of the aforementioned areas will be further explored for the video project. How does the ANA Code of Ethics impact your chosen clinical agency or environment? 3-4 Organize theories and knowledge from nursing science, arts, and technology when implementing interventions Secure a clinical site/agency and preceptor Collaboratively (student and preceptor) develop a clinical practicum plan with 3-5 measurable goals that you expect to accomplish. Be sure to include 1-2 interventions per goal. Explore the nursing theory or framework that supports your clinical practicum environment. Provide a brief overview of the theory and how it affects evidence-based practice, nursing leadership, nursing research, and management of care at your chosen practicum site. 5-6 Formulate holistic care when devising patient-specific interventions Support provision and promotion of health in selected health care settings by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation Schedule a conference (phone, Skype, in-person, etc.) with Preceptor and Course Instructor to review the goals and related interventions that were established with the input of your preceptor With the input of your preceptor, utilize the nursing process to determine at least one patientdriven issue associated with your clinical practicum agency/environment. Formulate 2 evidence-based interventions that you would recommend for implementation in regard to the identified issue(s). Share your

5 Combine research, evidence-based practice (EBP), critical thinking, and inter-profession collaboration when determining care choices and outcomes for an individual with alterations in health, or when engaging in health systems improvement Plan collaborative leadership activities and effective interdisciplinary communication amongst the health care team to provide workable solutions in rapidly changing health care systems Choose a topic for your Video Presentation and post your topic of choice in Blackboard for instructor approval Review the literature regarding collaborative leadership or interdisciplinary communication in healthcare systems findings in the Discussion Board threads. Reflect on your practicum experiences from the previous weeks. How did (does) research, EBP, critical thinking, interprofessional collaboration, etc., affect the overall health systems improvement of your clinical practicum agency? What are some of the more common interdisciplinary system issues associated with your clinical practicum environment and how does recent, peerreviewed (scholarly) literature suggest these issues be handled? Cite your source(s) using APA format. Be sure to collaborate with your preceptor to plan an activity or to determine possible solutions to identified issues. Explain how the identified issue affected decision making and safe nursing practice. Review the video of at least one peer. Based on your review, how did the video address EBP, nursing leadership, nursing research, or management of care?

6 ONLINE REFLECTION POSTS 25% Online interactive discussions are an integral part of learning in this course. Points will be awarded based on student presence and active participation in the threaded discussions. A rubric (see below) will be utilized for grading purposes. An initial response to the weekly reflection prompts must be posted by Wednesday of the scheduled session but can be posted as early as Sunday. A substantial response to the reflection post of at least one peer should occur by Saturday of the scheduled session i.e. responses indicating I agree or good job or the like are not considered a substantial response. A minimum of 2 weekly responses is required. Credit will not be given for an initial response to a discussion question that occurs prior to Sunday of the scheduled session. Students are not allowed to post after the weekly session has ended i.e. all posts must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Sunday of each week. 7 CLINICAL PRACTICUM EXPLORATION - 30% The student will choose a preceptor and a clinical practicum environment to explore how the chosen organization or facility approaches evidence-based practice, nursing leadership, nursing research, and management of care. Students are to review the Course Objectives and provide evidence of successful completion for each objective. Clinical Practicum Guidelines A preceptor MUST be an RN and MUST be prepared at the BSN level or above (i.e. BSN, MSN, DNP, etc.). A preceptors contact information i.e. , phone and mailing address so that we can verify that he/she is willing to serve as your preceptor. He/she will need to sign the Clinical Preceptor Agreement Form indicating agreement to voluntarily serve as your preceptor. Students have the responsibility to meet the agency employee orientation and health requirements. Compliance with the agency/health requirements such as safety procedures, standard precautions, submission of immunization records (including annual flu shots and PPDs), CPR certification, etc. is the student s responsibility. Students are asked to seek guidance from an agency representative for any questions or concerns regarding the specific requirements. Students are allowed to complete their practicum at their current place of employment but are strongly encouraged to complete their practicums at an outside agency. Students are NOT allowed to receive practicum credit for hours during their paid shifts and are not allowed to complete the practicum on the unit or directly within an area where they are currently employed. Since there is no Capstone uniform, students should wear whatever is worn in the agency by the nursing staff. Clinical Practicum Calendar/Log A minimum of 100 practicum hours are REQUIRED to complete the course. This includes literature review preparation, reflections, workshops, seminars, etc. in addition to hours spent directly with the preceptor. Preparation hours are NOT to overly exceed physical hours. A Clinical Practicum calendar of student activities should be established between the student and the preceptor within the first 2-3 weeks of the course. The calendar should also be approved by the course faculty PRIOR to the start of the practicum. An ongoing Clinical Practicum log should be maintained weekly by the student. The student will submit a signed copy of the log with practicum hours, and student and preceptor signatures by the designated midterm date. A final copy of the log with signatures and evidence of completed practicum hours must be submitted prior to the last week of the course. Failure to submit a complete log will result in course incompletion or possibly course failure. CLINICAL PRACTICUM VIDEO PRESENTATION- 30% Students are to choose and one of the designated focus areas (evidence-based practice, nursing leadership, nursing research, and management of care) and share how the organization approaches this particular area via a video presentation.

8 Be sure to cite and reference scholarly sources in 6 th edition APA format to support your presentation. A minimum of 5 scholarly sources published within the last 5 years is required. The video link i.e. via YouTube or the equivalent must be shared with your preceptor (and others on the unit if feasible) and must be posted in Blackboard by the designated date. Students are to review each other s video. After reviewing the videos, students must provide an evidence-based response to at least one peer, regarding their view of how the organization approaches the specified area, based on the content of the student peer s video presentation. Capstone Video Presentation Grading Rubric Guidelines Points 1. A description of at least one of the designated focus areas is included. /20 2. Information regarding how the organization meets or supports the focus area with evidence is included. 3. The impact on the presenter s personal and professional values, the related impact on nursing practice, and a recommendation for improvement is included. 4. A minimum of 5 evidence-based sources is included in APA format per the 6 th edition. Less than 3 grammatical errors are evident. Communication within the video is clear, comprehensive, and professional. 5. The video link was posted in the designated area within Blackboard by the specified time. Total /40 /20 /10 /10 /100
