Overview Participants will hear from numerous experts in the field of anesthesiology and learn the latest approaches to a broad variety of anesthesia-related topics. All the information will be applicable to the busy, clinician-oriented anesthesia care provider. Topics at this year s symposium will include presentations on challenging airways; ethical dilemmas in anesthesia; a practical review of understanding electrocardiographic readings and approaches to dysrhythmias; infectious risks associated with regional anesthesia; and assessment of the ambulatory surgical patients. Additional topics include blood management; risk assessment of patients with obstructive sleep apnea; special considerations in the cancer patient who presents for surgery; as well as confronting the challenges presented by treating pain in the pediatric surgical patient. These topics have been selected by requests from previous symposium participants, as well as current literature reviews and discussions with experts in anesthesiology. Target Audience This symposium is designed for anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and anesthesia assistants. Objectives At the completion of this symposium, participants (within their scope of practice) should be able to: Examine duties, efficiencies, outcomes and performance metrics and recognize that, as one measures mistakes, there may be mistakes in measuring. Describe the challenges and develop a scheme in judging clinical competence. Review the anatomy of the airway and institute a protocol to better prepare for unanticipated challenges. Engage in discussion on the ethical dilemmas facing anesthesia and be able to counsel patients and other healthcare providers regarding such topics. Integrate the latest understanding of blood management and develop a logical sequence of proper utilization. Describe the core principles of ECG interpretation and develop practical approaches to treating dysrhythmias. Employ the latest information regarding infectious risks and complications associated with regional anesthesia into their practice. Understand information regarding the role of ketamine as an adjuvant to perioperative analgesia. Integrate the current trends in ambulatory surgery and risk stratify those who are acceptable candidates for these non-hospital settings. Employ the latest understanding of cancer patients who present for surgery: how best to prepare them and the special considerations they need. Differentiate the current information and understand the controversies regarding patients undergoing tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies. Review the latest techniques and develop practice approaches in the perioperative pain management of children. Describe current lung protective ventilation strategies in critically ill patients and understand the challenges in maintaining such strategies when they become surgical patients. Apply the information regarding risk of complications in patients with obstructive sleep apnea in both the intraoperative and postoperative settings. Integrate the updated information on patients presenting to the operating room for neurosurgical procedures. Describe the principles of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; its indications and future strategies in the resuscitation of the critically ill hypoxic patient. 2
