1 NEWSLETTER FALL 2018 PAGE 1 OF 6 Janeway Christmas Appeal Celebrating the Season! The first snowfall of the year creates excitement in children of all ages, as they hope for snow days to build wintry forts and families of snowmen. At this time of the year, every child wants to be at home and outside, including all the kids at the Janeway. However, for kids at the Janeway, being outside to enjoy the winter season is not always possible, and missing the holiday fun can be especially difficult for them and their families. This year, please consider making a gift to the Janeway Children s Hospital Foundation, so that we can make each child s stay a little more pleasant, and hopefully, a little shorter. Thank you for helping us to Make the Season Bright, For all our Kids Cut and mail to: Janeway Foundation 300 Prince Philip Drive St. John s, NL A1B 3V6 FULL NAME MAILING ADDRESS PHONE SIGNATURE DATE SIGNED
2 PAGE 2 OF 6 Greetings from the President & CEO As we begin to wrap up another incredible year, we look back on what has been accomplished over the past 12 months and the great strides that have been taken to improve the provision of excellence in health care for our province s children. The staff of the Janeway Hospital are continuously looking for ways to improve their practices, reduce risk and increase the number of positive outcomes for our young patients. Accomplishing these goals requires significant ongoing funding for vital medical equipment; life-saving research; staff educational opportunities; and specialized pediatric programs. That is where we, and you, help to make a difference, each and every day. It is because of your ongoing support and commitment to healthcare, and the prudent use of your donated funds, that the Janeway Hospital is the centre of excellence that it is today. The coming year promises to be a busy and exciting one for both the Janeway Foundation, and the Janeway Hospital. To enhance the care, comfort and well-being of our young patients, plans are in place for a number of construction projects. Among them are a Special Care Unit to provide babies with the close monitoring and essential care that is required after surgery; renovation of the Development and Rehabilitation Adaptive Kitchen to serve as an assessment, intervention and education space for the Lifestyles Program; and the transformation of the Janeway Main Entrance. On behalf of our province s children, their families and the staff of the Janeway Hospital, we wish you a safe, happy and healthy Christmas Season, and send our sincerest appreciation for your continued support. Merry Christmas! President & CEO Janeway Children s Hospital Foundation Cut and mail to: Janeway Foundation 300 Prince Philip Drive St. John s, NL A1B 3V6

Let s Roll up our Sleeves for Flu Vaccinations Eastern Health launched a fall campaign encouraging all individuals six months of age and older to get the flu vaccine, especially those who are at increased risk for complications from influenza, and those capable of transmitting influenza to individuals at high-risk. In support of this initiative, the Children s and Women s Health Program (CWHP), in partnership with the Janeway Foundation, held a flu clinic at the Janeway for health care professionals who work within the CWHP. Health care professionals at the Janeway rolled up their sleeves and helped promote this important message to their colleagues as well as to the general public. The seasonal influenza vaccine is available at no cost to any member of the general public ages six months and up. For more information, go to Arlene Scott, Regional Director, Janeway Children s & Women s Health Program having her flu vaccine. 4 PAGE 4 OF 6 Your Donations at Work RetCam An Indispensable Retinal Digital Imaging System Our eyes not only affect how we see, but also how we feel, impacting all aspects of our lives. Ensuring that Janeway staff have the latest advancements in diagnosing and treating eye disease, or problems, is of paramount importance in the care of our children. In partnership with you, our donors, the Janeway Foundation has funded a Mobile RetCam Digital Imaging System, a noninvasive, advanced system that captures brilliant, full colour digital images of the retina of the eye. These images can be used for immediate evaluation of eye conditions and shared electronically with off-site medical practitioners for remote consultations, facilitating a convenient method for second opinions. They can also be stored in the patient s medical history for ongoing assessment of conditions and treatment. These advancements in digital imaging of the retinas have assisted physicians in the evaluation of childhood eye diseases and can help to preserve the vision for our smallest patients. In NICU for Premature Babies When children are born premature they are tested for a condition that can compromise their retinas, called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). In severe cases, this condition may also cause blindness. In Full Term Newborns To obtain images for physician evaluations of eye disease and to establish a baseline for future eye health. In the OR Imaging full-term newborns may require anaesthesia. With easy mobility the RetCam can be moved to the required location within the hospital. In Pediatric Clinics The images obtained through the RetCam are an effective educational tool for both parents and staff, helping to better understand the eye condition and the physicians evaluation of eye disease and required treatment protocol. 5 PAGE 5 OF 6 Education Development & Rehabilitation Conference October Hosted by the Janeway Development & Rehabilitation Team Why is the continuing education of our Janeway staff so important to our patients? For those in the medical profession, learning does not stop when a university or postsecondary degree is obtained. To ensure the enhancement of clinical practices and the provision of best care, medical professionals enter into a practice of life-long learning. Imagine the changes that have taken place over the past 10 years in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury. It is truly difficult to grasp how important those medical advancements are, and how much time our medical professionals spend enhancing their knowledge base to keep pace. Each year, the Janeway Foundation awards educational and bursary grants, totalling $100,000 to our hospital staff. These grants have enabled staff to take part in courses and conferences in Canada and the United States, as well as host educational opportunities, right here at home. One such opportunity was a Conference hosted by the Janeway Development and Rehabilitation Team, fully funded by the Janeway Foundation, focusing on the treatment and assessment of children diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. As the Janeway is the provincial referral centre for all children with physical disabilities, including Cerebral Palsy, this conference will be of great benefit for staff and the clients that they serve. Attendees of the October conference included 15 Janeway physiotherapists (including our four outreach therapists from Gander (1), Grand Falls-Windsor (1) and Corner Brook (2); our two orthotists; and several therapists from Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick). Sending 15 members of the Janeway Staff out-of-province to attend a conference such as this would not be financially possible, but hosting at home allows access to incredible educational opportunities for more staff, all across the province. Guest instructor for the conference was Beverly Cusick, PT, MS of Telluride, Colorado. Ms. Cusick has been invited to instruct courses in more than 18 countries and devotes much of her professional efforts to generate literature and educational materials, as well as teaching and developing therapeutic products for orthopedics. On behalf of the Janeway physiotherapists and orthotists who participated in the Beverly Cusick courses recently sponsored by the Janeway Foundation, please accept our sincere thanks and appreciation. The Janeway Foundation s educational grants help to ensure that staff working with the children of Newfoundland and Labrador can maintain and enhance their professional competence. Having this opportunity to bring an internationally recognized instructor to us is of enormous benefit to both staff and children. - Development and Rehabilitation Team
