6 LECTURERS AND GUEST SPEAKERS Dr. Philip Martinez, EdD, MSN, APRN-BC: A graduate of the University of New Haven with a bachelor s degree in law enforcement science (1999), Philip Martinez changed his career path and enrolled in Yale School of Nursing s Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing (GEPN) program, earning a certificate in nursing in 2002, a MSN as an acute care nurse practitioner in 2006, and a Doctor of Education degree from Southern Connecticut State University in He is an American Nurses Credentialing Center board certified acute care nurse practitioner, and holds certifications as a critical care registered nurse and a cardiac medicine certification from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Currently, Dr. Martinez is the program director for the GEPN program and a full-time lecturer at YSN. In 2009, he was the recipient of the Middlesex Hospital Family Practice Medicine s Support Person Award, and in 2015 was named Nurse of the Year and also recognized as an innovator in advanced practice nursing by Middlesex Hospital. Martinez is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National League for Nursing, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Heart Association Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative and Resuscitation, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Dr. Martinez believes strongly in the historical relevance of nursing and the importance of bridging the art of science of nursing in the classroom and clinical environments. He also is passionate about inter-professional education and works closely with his colleagues at the Yale School of Nursing, the Yale University School of Medicine, and the Yale University Physician Associate programs to increase inter-professional educational opportunities between the disciplines. Ms. Virginia Sherrick, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, RN-BC, CHSE: Ms. Virginia Sherrick teaches in the GEPN and FNP programs. She brings over 20 years of nursing experience to her role as a Simulation Director from a myriad of practice settings across the care continuum. In her role as the Director of the Simulation Lab, Ms. Sherrick works collaboratively with the school of nursing faculty, outside practice partners, and the community, to develop and provide an active learning environment for students via simulation-based learning curriculum. Ms. Sherrick earned her AS from Salve Regina University, her BSN from Central Connecticut State University, her MSN from the University of Hartford, and her post-master s certificate from Southern Connecticut State University. She holds certifications as a Family Nurse Practitioner, a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, and in Professional Development Nursing. Ms. Sherrick is a member of the Outreach Committee for the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning and Sigma Theta Tau International. Locally, she is a member of the Connecticut Nurse s Association and is co-vice president of the Healthcare Simulation Network of Connecticut. She is also the past president of the Educational Consortium of CT. Ms. Sarah Korpak, MSN, RN-BC, CPAN, CAPA: Ms. Sarah Korpak is a Lecturer in the GEPN program at Yale University School of Nursing. She holds an Associate s Degree in Nursing from Three Rivers Community College, a Bachelor s in the Science of Nursing and Master s in the Science of Nursing (Education) from Sacred Heart University. She is currently competing her Doctorate in Nursing Education (EdD) at Southern Connecticut State University. Her Professional Associations include The American Nurses Association, American Society for Peri-Anesthesia Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International, and both the Connecticut and National Leagues for Nursing. Ms. Korpak began her career at Yale School of Nursing as a medical-surgical preceptor in 2014 with the GEPN program. She enjoys the chance to cultivate adult learners, and her philosophy on nursing education fosters an atmosphere that challenges all students to achieve their goals through experiences that emphasizes the critical thinking process while respecting the intrinsic differences that make adult learners unique and special. yale.nslcleaders.org 6

7 Ms. Terry Kinsley, RN, MSN: Terry Kinsley is a Lecturer at Yale School of Nursing as simulation faculty. She received an associate degree in nursing from Capital Community College, and both a bachelor s degree in nursing and a master s of science in nursing education from the University of Phoenix. It was during her time as the Nurse Educator that Terry began to develop a passion for simulation education as an emerging pedagogy. After leaving Hartford Hospital, Terry joined the staff at the University of Saint Joseph as Director of the Nursing Learning Lab and Simulation Center. Her passion for nursing and love of simulation education helped to grow and develop undergraduate baccalaureate prepared nursing students. In 2016 Terry completed a Healthcare Simulation Fellowship Program sponsored by International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning/CAE Healthcare. This opportunity provided a year of intense education working with leaders in the field of nursing simulation education. Terry was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau in 2011 and received the Nightingale Award of Excellence in 2010 from Hartford Hospital. Dr. Theresa Brown, BSN, RN: Theresa Brown is a registered nurse who formerly worked on an oncology unit in Pittsburgh and now works in home hospice. She is also the author of the New York Times Bestselling book The Shift; One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients Lives. The Shift portrays one real shift worked by a hospital nurse, but it shows not just a day-in-the-life of an RN, but all the life in one day in the hospital. Dr. Brown is a frequent contributor to the New York Times. Her Opinion series, Bedside, examined health care from a nurse s point of view. One of her columns, on health care reform, earned Dr. Brown an invitation to the White House, where President Obama quoted her in defense of the Affordable Care Act. Dr. Brown has written for CNN.com, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Slate.com, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and has a quarterly column in The American Journal of Nursing called What I m Reading, that discusses books of interest to nurses. She has been interviewed on the NPR program Fresh Air and has appeared on Hardball, 20/20 and NPR s Talk of the Nation. She speaks nationally on topics relating to nursing, health care and end of life care. Her first book, Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between, is used as a text-book at Schools of Nursing around the country. A native of Missouri, Dr. Brown has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago and taught English for three years at Tufts University. She stayed home with her three children after working at Tufts and was inspired by them to return to school and become a nurse, leaving academia behind.
