Suresh M.D SOAP 2013 Sol Shnider Meeting March 14-17, 2013 Needs and Target Audience The conference will highlight the relevancy of the Practice Guidelines in Obstetric Anesthesia, tips to optimize epidural labor analgesia, the use of ultrasound in labor epidural placement and achieving competency. The conference will focus on the growing epidemic of obesity and practical tips from literature. Important issues will be addressed including the changing views of vaginal birth after cesarean section; an update on fetal neurotoxicity and the anesthetic contributions to the success of external version. A clinic forum on post-partum hemorrhage will provide perspectives from three disciplines obstetrical, anesthetic and hematology with discussion on Massive Transfusion Protocol. The conference will provide new concepts on: Improving patient outcomes with protocol driven care crisis management; Rapid Response teams in management of critical situations in obstetrics.the audience will hear the latest update on CPR in pregnancy and Anesthesia Quality Institute Data collection so as to benchmark your practice. Another feature of the conference includes discussion on enhancing the business aspect of your obstetrical practice, improving patient care with point-of-care testing and an interesting discussion on the most frequently questions posed by practitioners to the SOAP Website. The best part of the conference are the two special lectures: 1) What s New in Obstetrics: Evolving Consensus on Standardization of FHR Pattern Management, 2) What s New in Clinical Obstetric Anesthesia An Update from Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) will benefit from the updates and discussions on cutting edge topics in obstetrical anesthesia. Educational Methods and Objectives Through the use of lectures, case presentations, panel discussion, a syllabus and hands-on workshop sessions, the participant should be able to: Describe the role of ultrasound for spine demarcation before placement of neuraxial blocks. Describe the techniques to improve labor analgesia and state of the art regional anesthesia for cesarean section. Discuss the most frequently asked questions posed to SOAP Website. Employ lessons learned from the ASA Closed Claims Database Project regarding obstetric anesthesia mishaps to improve patient safety and decrease provider malpractice. Provide an update on new concepts of CPR in pregnant patients. Describe strategies to improve patient outcomes with protocol driven care, Team STEPPS and communication. Discuss strategies to enhance the business aspect of your obstetrical practice. Describe point-of-care testing to enhance patient care. Discuss the newly evolving consensus on standardizing management of FHR patterns. Evaluation Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
7 Needs and Target Audience The planning committee reviewed comments and surveys from previous workshop participants who indicated the value of the workshop. The committee also reviewed recent national scientific evidence and peer-reviewed articles to determine the need for increased education and hands-on training in the management of pediatric and adult difficult airways. Sources demonstrating the need for improved performance in the management of the difficult airway (DA) include the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Obstetric Anesthesia Closed Claims Project Database, and standardized collection of case summaries from professional liability insurance companies closed claims files. National and international anesthesiologists, and emergency medicine physician experts in airway management will provide practical tips and updates during the course and in the interactive group sessions at the workshop. Educational Methods and Objectives Through the use of lectures, case presentations, panel discussion, a syllabus and hands-on workshop sessions, the participant should be able to: Describe factors that predispose patients to difficult intubation and/or ventilation. Discuss preoperative assessment methods to identify patients difficult to intubate. Discuss the use of airway devices in the various steps of the ASA Difficult Airway Algorithm in appropriate cinical situations. Discuss the new airway devices and methods to help manage difficult airways. Describe and discuss the features, advantages, limitations, and applications of new supraglottic ventilatory devices available for difficult airway management. Evaluation Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
