3 Entry Level MSN Program Overview Individuals who are not nurses but have a bachelor s degree may apply to the Entry Level Master of Science program. Three year intensive program excluding summers. Full-time study only. Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN after 4 semesters (2 years). During the remaining 2 semesters, students focus solely on graduate level nursing education including emphasis specific practicums. We offer the following emphases: adult acute/critical care, community/public health nursing, nursing administration, pediatrics, psychiatric-mental health nursing, and women s health. Graduates of the program are eligible for a 1 year Post Master s FNP certificate option after 1year RN experience. The program culminates with an applied research course or master s thesis. 3

10 Frequently Asked Program Questions Can I enroll as a part-time student? No When are classes offered? Daytime through 7pm. Commitment typically 4 days per week. Where are your clinical sites? Throughout the Bay Area; SF, East Bay, the Peninsula, a few Marin and South Bay. What are the costs for this program? Currently $3900 per semester (approximate). Is financial aid available? Yes. Federal and state aid; the SoN notifies enrolled student about scholarships. 10

11 Admission Criteria and Information Graduation from an accredited institution of higher learning with a baccalaureate or higher degree and a minimum Last 60 units GPA of 3.0 Establish written English proficiency per the Analytical Writing section of the GRE at the time of application. A score of 4 or above is required. Health-related work or volunteer experience Three letters of recommendation and references O At least one of theses must be from the site where health related work or volunteer experience occurred. Personal statement Completion of prerequisite course work by the time of application. 11

Ø A minimum grade of C is required in each course. Ø Visit to identify appropriate courses at a community college; or contact the SoN if your school is not on Assist. *This is an integrated course in which topics in general, organic and biochemistry are covered. Effective Fall 2014 individual courses in general, inorganic, organic, or integrated chemistry are acceptable. 12

13 Additional Information The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requires pre-licensure students to have completed a minimum of 16 semester units comprising natural sciences, behavioral and social sciences. To complement the anatomy, physiology, and microbiology natural science prerequisites, it is highly recommended that students complete a general psychology or developmental psychology course prior to taking NURS 328/329 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Theory and Practicum, and any additional behavioral or social science course as needed to fulfill the BRN's natural, behavioral, and social science unit requirement. (Sociology or Cultural Anthropology are generally taken.) 13

14 Two Applications are Required The graduate admission application for San Francisco State University is a two-part process. Part 1: Formal Fall 2017 application for admission to the SF State Division of Graduate Studies. Program of interest must be: Nursing (Entry Level Non RN-MSN) [MS] Application period: October to February 1, 2017 Submit the CSU Mentor first/early in the application period. Part 2: Submit the School of Nursing supplemental application via NursingCAS Select one emphasis/track only. Application period: October 15, 2016 to February 1, 2017, 8:59pm 14

24 Application Tips/ Take Aways From Today Ø Complete CSU Mentor first/early in the application period. Ø Begin the NursingCAS application ASAP when it opens; In particular: o o o Create and submit reference requests. Complete Colleges Attended section for access to the NursingCAS Transcript Request/Matching Form. Send NursingCAS Transcript Request/Matching Form to Registrar s Office of each school attended. Ø Identify (now) the individuals who will complete your evaluations/ references and give them a heads-up about the process/timeline for reference submission. o They will receive an from NursingCAS about reference completion. 24
