3 March, 1997: Pain Clinical Focus Group began meeting in Anaheim, California o First topic was overview of highlights of 1997 National conference by Judith Chodil o Met periodically through 1998, working to become chartered o 5-6 members o Developed By-laws Changed name to ASPMN SoCal Chapter in 1999 o President: Judith Chodil SCC has had as many as 30 members as it has waxed and waned through the years Purpose: o ASPMN Southern California Chapter is a network of nurses dedicated to promoting the highest standards of care for patients of all ages who are experiencing pain Meetings o Initially, meetings were held all over Southern California to take into consideration the distance that members had to travel Orange, Placentia, Montclair, Upland, Pomona, Brea, Irvine, Del Mar, Pasadena, Los Angeles Members come from a variety of settings: o Hospital o Clinic/out patient o Ambulatory Surgery o University, Education o Pharmaceutical Industry o Military Members practice in a variety of roles: o RN o Advanced Practice o Professor o Educator o Pain Resource Nurse o Advocacy 3

Members live as far apart as: o Santa Barbara to the north o San Diego to the south o Pacific Palisades to the west o Claremont to the east Covering Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, and San Diego counties As much as 200 miles apart! It means that everyone should impart some wisdom on others, especially children, so that they learn as much as possible and learn different points of view.. 12 Annual Face to Face We hold an annual meeting each spring Catered CEU s 50/50 Raffle Door prizes Tranquil location, thanks to a member s connections Mission: To advance and promote optimal nursing care for people affected by pain by promoting best nursing practices 1,686 Members 25 Chapters 1 Chapter, anticipated approval this fall 12

13 SPPAN is an association of leaders, representing a variety of health care and consumer organizations, and individuals, who work together in a cooperative and coordinated fashion to effect positive pain policy on the state level policy that guarantees access to comprehensive and effective pain care for all people living with pain. SPPAN s Mission: To promote person-centered care for people affected by pain through advancing effective pain policy. California: SB 809, introduced by Sens. DeSaulnier and Steinberg, with 4 Senate and 1 House co-authors; passed the Senate; passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee on 6/25 and the Committee on Business, Professions and Consumer Protection on 8/13; re-referred to the Appropriations Committee, which will hear it on August 30. This bill would fund the California PMP (CURES) by establishing a separate CURES Fund within the state treasury, and would require the licensing boards to assess an annual fee of $6 on licensees authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish, or dispense controlled substances, with the fee to be collected at the time of license renewal; would allow the Department of Consumer Affairs to decrease this fee if less money is required to fund CURES; would permit insurers, health care service plans, manufacturers, and other donors to voluntarily contribute to the CURES fund; would require the board to develop and disseminate educational materials related to assessing risk of abuse and diversion; would require practitioners authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish, or dispense controlled substances to register to access CURES. Action: We support this bill as it currently stands, but would ideally like to see the addition of permission for delegates to access CURES information on behalf of practitioners. We ask advocates to contact their legislators in support, and to request the addition of delegate capability to this bill. More than 3,700 members Founded in 1993, the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative (SCCPI) is a nonprofit volunteer interdisciplinary organization made up of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and many other professionals dedicated to the relief of cancer pain. SCCPI works closely with other professional and regulatory agencies to remove barriers to optimum pain relief. Three active committees o Professional Education o Regulatory Affairs o Non Malignant Pain Task Force 13

14 2006 SCCPI Excellence in Pain Management Group Award As a group focused on educating and supporting nurses in managing pain they are certainly deserving of this award. Their dedication to providing pain relief for patients and improving the practice of pain and symptom management for nursing is laudable. As a board they have worked hard this year to increase the membership of their chapter and provide excellent pain management CE activities to increase awareness of the issues effecting nurses ability to provide effective pain management for their patients in pain Board, Southern California Chapter of the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) 736 Members Mission: To Promote the Highest Professional Standards of Oncology Nursing in the Greater Los Angeles area.
