5 Day at the Capitol.. On March 28 th Amy Barnett and I attended the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Day at the Capital. They gave us a crash course on how to lobby our elected officials. Then we were divided by our voting districts and sent out to meet with our state Representatives and Senators. The key items on the agenda were improving the quality of life for patients in Minnesota by establishing a 22 member state advisory committee on palliative care and removing barriers to colorectal cancer screenings thru a program called links of care. This program helps provide un-insured or under insured Minnesotans with the screenings that can help prevent or help early diagnosis. The third initiative was to encourage our representatives to continue the Minnesota State Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), which supports local community programs that reduce obesity or tobacco use, and to stress the need for the program by not cutting any funding for budget cuts. The day was a learning experience. It showed me how approachable our officials are and I look forward to next year. By Kimberly Holm
