1 Documentation WHS Policy Risk Assessment Procedures Training Plan Procedures WHS Training Procedures The Hut is responsible for ensuring that staff have the knowledge and skills required to perform their work effectively and safely. This involves: identifying the knowledge and skill requirements for staff positions in each program and service assessing staff against these requirements (training needs assessments) providing training to upgrade knowledge and skills to meet these requirements - prior to a staff member undertaking work at the Hut for which training is required maintaining training records. Training requirements include: management and officers being trained in WHS legal requirements, hazard identification, risk analysis/assessment and the conduct of incident/accident investigations and analysis. staff being made aware of any rules and regulations relating to their role which concern their safety and safety of others 'refresher' training needed as identified by staff performance reviews, observation of staff performance, risk assessments that identify training as a means of addressing risks, changes to processes or 'tools' used and legislation or other changes that impact on work at The Hut. Training records include: a Training Plan showing when training due and when completed training requirements for particular programs and services based on the nature of the tasks they perform (included in the Plan) training needs assessments of particular positions by Officers (the results of which are added to the Plan) other training undertaken by Hut staff assessments of training provided to be completed by participants at the end of each course X:\Policies and Procedures\WHS_training_procedure.doc Page 1 of 6

2 when 'refreshers' are required and when delivered Officers should follow up on training provided to their staff to reinforce key messages and lessons learned. Training Plan Schedule 1 [For one calendar year] Identify the training topics required at The Hut (Top row of the Training Plan). List the names of staff requiring training. Identify whether it is Initial Training (Category A) or Refresher Training (Category B) that is required. Set target dates for the training to be provided to staff (e.g. Ja 2017). Shade in the cell to show that the training is completed per staff member. Refresher Training: Some topics require refresher training. These are usually topics relating to systems of work that need to be conducted on a regular (even if infrequent) basis to ensure staff are reminded of the requirements such as:. Emergency Procedures every two years Manual Handling every two years. N.B. The refresher topics are decided by Hut management in consultation with Hut officers, where applicable. Staff who are identified for training each two years need to be monitored by the relevant Hut officers to ensure that the refresher training is completed, refer Schedule 1. Training Topics Schedule 1 identifies known training topics for Hut services and programs but is to be reviewed prior to each use to ensure that all training requirements are identified. (For simplicity, this Schedule could be used for all Hut staff training topics as required. Assessment To enable the effectiveness of training conducted to be assessed, the site should be audited and assessments made of how well the lessons learned are practised. Training Register All training conducted (internally and externally) is to be recorded in a Training Register. Schedule 2 is a form for transmitting training course information to whoever is responsible for the Register which could be the personnel database if set up for this purpose. Training Needs Analysis Training needs are to be assessed annually by identifying which staff require either initial or refresher training over the next year.
