GROUP DISCUSSION What do you think when you hear the word philanthropy? What do you think of when you hear culture of philanthropy? How many of your organizations have a culture of philanthropy?
DEFINITIONS 1. Fundraising 2. Fund Development 3. Resource Development 4. Culture of Philanthropy Fund Development Resource Development Culture of Philanthropy Fundraising
CULTURE What is Culture? What is Organizational Culture?
Philanthropy (from Greek ) the love of humanity, in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing, and enhancing what it means to be human.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY ORGANIZATION Donor Centric -- Storytelling -- Mission Driven
GROUP DISCUSSION Create your own definition of a culture of philanthropy
HOW CAN YOU BUILD A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY? Example 1: I believe that through gifts of financial support, our nursing program will continue to grow and educate additional nurses that will serve our communities. I will help forward this belief by sharing of my time, knowledge, and financial gifts in creative ways and by sharing the joy this provides and the impact thereof with those close to me. Example 2: Within NMNEC, everyone helps to forward our mission and provides opportunities for benefactor engagement in a variety of ways. All benefactors of NMNEC will be recognized for their gifts of time and talent and personally know the impact of his/her support. These are not responsibilities of one person or one nursing program rather, this is an opportunity for each member of NMNEC to share the impact that philanthropy can have.
BUILDING A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY Organizations need to think, act, and engage differently!
BUILDING A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY 1. Asking for money is not all about the money 2. Sharing your passion 3. Don t believe the myth that Money = Power 4. What does it really mean when prospective donors say no --Sasha Dichter philanthropy social change Reflections on generosity, and

RECOGNIZE A POTENTIAL DONOR Passion Connection Financial capacity Desire to make a difference Belief in the mission
WHAT S THE #1 REASON DONORS DON T GIVE? They aren t asked.
Fundraising is ALL about relationships. Let s talk about relationships.
4-KEYS TO BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH DONORS 1. get their attention 2. build the relationship 3. explain the investment 4. emotion is a driving force
