2 This course was designed for all physicians, nurses, and pharmacists who care for patients in pain or with lifethreatening illness. As a result of the California law, AB 487, beginning in January 2002 California physicians must take 12 hours of CME in pain and palliative care. This course was developed to meet the legal requirement. Our nationally recognized faculty will offer practical, usable, clinically relevant information regarding: Pain assessment and treatment Management of non-pain symptoms Treatment of back pain and other common pain syndromes Communicating with dying patients Legal and regulatory issues Ethical issues at the end of life Spiritual and psychological growth at the end of life Educational Objectives At the end of this activity course participants should be able to: Perform a comprehensive pain assessment Develop a treatment plan for patients with acute and chronic pain including: cancer pain, neuropathic pain, back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia Describe approaches for managing nausea and vomiting List strategies for effective communication with dying patients Describe the major ethical, legal, and regulatory issues that arise in pain management and end-oflife care Develop strategies to provide pain management and end-of-life care for patients with substance abuse issues Describe the signs and symptoms and how to care for patients and their families during the last 24 hours of life Describe which patients are appropriate for referral to a pain clinic
