Mental health is integrated throughout the course. Application of knowledge and skills occurs in the nursing laboratories and a variety of clinical settings. Credits: 5 Credits (4 Theory, 1 Lab) Contact Hours: 4 Theory, 3 Lab Pre-requisites: NUR 140, NUR 141, NUR 142, NUR 144, & NUR 145 or Advanced Standing as an LPN and NUR 242 Co-requisites: NUR 245 Institutional Learning Outcomes Critical Thinking and Information Competency (CTIC): Students will recognize the need for information to solve problems and make decisions. Student will identify, organize, analyze, and evaluate the credibility of relevant sources and use information in an ethical manner. Community and Global Consciousness and Responsibility (CGCR): Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interconnectedness of global, national, and local concerns, analyzing cultural, political, social, and environmental issues from multiple perspectives. Communication and Expression (CE): Students will communicate effectively and express themselves creatively. Students will interpret thoughtfully and logically, engaging actively in dialogue and discussion. Quantitative and Technological Competence (QTC): Students will solve problems by selecting and applying quantitative methods to construct arguments with the use of numerical and statistical support. Students will utilize technology appropriate to their chosen field of study. Student Learning Outcomes: The student will: 1. Apply nursing concepts to provide safe, quality, evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings to diverse adults with stable and unstable conditions.
2 2. Apply clinical reasoning to make patient-centered care decisions for adult patients with stable and unstable conditions. 3. Select quality improvement processes to improve patient care for adult patients with stable and unstable conditions. 4. Engage in collaboration and teamwork with members of the interprofessional team, the patient, and the patient s support persons when caring for adult patients with stable and unstable conditions. 5. Analyze the role of information management principles, techniques, and systems, and patient care technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making when caring for adult patients with stable and unstable conditions. 6. Apply leadership, management, legal, and ethical guidelines in practice as a professional nurse. 7. Analyze how a culture of caring can be promoted to provide holistic, compassionate patient care for acutely ill, adult patients. Required: HESI Patient Care Reviews with RN Case Studies and Practice Tests for Concept Based Curriculum Supplies: Device with internet to be used in the classroom to access Lippincott CoursePoint and HESI Access to ACES or a home computer is a must. Computer problems will not be an excused reason for assignments being late. Grading Scale: A C A C B D B D B D C F 59 & below
3 A minimum grade of 80% is required to pass the course and progress in the nursing program. Grades will not be rounded up. Evaluation for this course is based on points and consists of: 5-7 tests and 1 final exam Weekly quizzes PrepU & HESI assignments Participation points Other assignments may be given throughout the semester as deemed necessary by the instructor Math Competency: Each student will be required to take a basic conversions and dosage calculation test during week 3. If the student receives less than 90% on this test they will need to remediate by setting up an appointment with a tutor or nursing faculty and the test will be given again during week 15 of the semester. If the student receives less than 90% on the second exam, the student will be required to purchase and complete the HESI pharmacology program as assigned over winter break. The student will be required to present proof of successful completion of the HESI program and take the exam a third time the week prior to the start of second semester. Arrangements for the test can be made through the nursing office. If the student receives less than 90% on the third attempt they will be unable to continue on in the program. Participation points 30 participation points are available for NUR 240 Participation points are awarded up front and need to be maintained for the semester Loss of participation points occur with each absence, with attending without a device, or with indications of non-participation or marginal participation (sleeping in class, surfing or texting, talking when lecture is occurring, etc.) All policies and guidelines found in the Handbook for Associate Degree Nursing Students will be followed and enforced. The student is expected to be familiar with all policies. Failure to follow policies and guidelines may result in probation, failure in the course and/or removal from the program based on the seriousness of the offence. Refer to the Handbook for Associate Degree Nursing Students for information regarding: Tests Test Days Quizzes Attendance Expectation and Consequences Classroom Behavior Handheld Devices Dishonesty/Cheating Students are expected to demonstrate behaviors that are congruent with the ANA Code of Ethics and ANA Position Statement on Incivility in all class related activities.
4 Community Service Each student will have a 10 hour community service requirement per year in the ADN program. Each student must have at least 2 different activities in this requirement. Students must use their gogebic.edu address when communicating with the instructor or sending in assignments. SKILL TESTING NAME: The student will be given 2 attempts to perform specific skills according to criteria. Inability to perform the skills as taught in the lab will result in a grade no higher than a C in this course. Content covered in lab will also be tested in a written format either separately or incorporated into the lecture tests. Broke sterile technique without being aware of it C. Broke sterile technique more than twice (was aware of it) D. Was unable to complete procedure accurately within 10 minutes E. Inaccurate results o Was unable to determine drops/minute o Was unable to differentiate normal from abnormal lung sounds F. Poor technique
