2 3 Attributes That make Up a Nurse s Philosophy Joyce Kutin RN, MOL February 10, Nursing Philosophy is based on both professional organization and individual definitions. Many factors both intrinsically and extrinsically influence one s personal perceptions of the great profession called nursing. What are the key points in being a professional nurse? Accountability, professionalism and compassion are the three key points referenced within this article that will be discussed. Every nurse is accountable for maintaining her own knowledge and education after completion of a nursing program. With a focus on personal professional growth that intellectually stimulates and promotes individual autonomy with her given specialty of practice, a nurse can greatly improve her self-confidence and professional motivation, thus providing a firm foundation on which to base her nursing judgment. Accountability As professionals, nurses have been held to a high standard by the general population of society, physicians and other nurses as well. Self-regulation requires personal accountability. Each individual must take ownership of his or her knowledge base for professional practice. Each must demonstrate a level of personal control and autonomy within a TEAM environment while adhering directly unto principles, guidelines and rules important to the profession (ANA, 2010c). Florence Nightingale quoted by Tye, J. (with Schwab, D., 2009), I will not allow low self-esteem, self-limiting beliefs, or the negativity of others to prevent me from achieving my authentic goals and from becoming the person I am meant to be" (p.113). The American Nurses
3 Association Scope and Standards of Practice (2010), discusses key points within appendix B. Nurses are responsible for their own personal accountability and maintaining competence within their personal scope of practice. Nurses owe it to their patient population to demonstrate this accountability throughout their career. Given this shared responsibility, employers must provide and encourage nurses to continue their licensure, advanced credentialing or further schooling (p.81). Compassion To be effective in the field of nursing involves compassion, understanding, and tenacity. It requires the delivery of quality care with utmost respect and patience for all individuals of all lifestyles. The nurse-patient relationship respects the autonomy of patients as individuals through dignity and worth. In all professional relationships, the nurse practices with compassion and without restrictions toward each individual regardless of diversity, socioeconomic condition or ethnicity (ANA, 2010a). Professionalism Nursing is about helping others, although each of us has a different perspective on achievement without overbearing influence of personal biases or prejudices. Professionalism is defined through the applied perception of each individual nurse with regard to the scope and standards of practice, code of ethics and social policy of nursing. The assurance of confidence regarding nurses is the shared responsibility of the profession, individual nurses, regulatory bodies, employers, and other key stakeholders (ANA, 2010b). Nursing is not just a degree or a licensure but as the image of an individual that is compassionate, displays accountability and above all is professional in manner. Professional regulation about the oversight, monitoring, and control of its members is based on the principles
4 and guidelines deemed most important. For example, a nurse may receive certification to a specific standard within that particular specialty (ANA, 2010c). Nurses of today are continually challenged with fast-pasted demands of technology, clients and the demands of the career with respect to their personal lives. Personal Goals Personal professional goals should be both short and long term for the registered nurse. Nursing teaches you both the reality of life and humility. Allow yourself small victories, learn from your mistakes and put your losses behind you. Nurses take care of thousands of people during their career. These individuals are in a nurse s life for only moments, yet that brief encounter can affect them for the rest of their lives. Compassion displayed by just holding the hand of someone who is dying or is simply displaying anxiety toward surgery or a procedure will teach you so much. There will be patients who will influence you the rest of your career and remind you why you chose to be a nurse: simply to care. Embrace the moments one at a time, remembering when meeting challenges to breathe and look around, as you are not alone in the battle toward quality care of patients. Nursing is a calling to one who is willing to devote long hours, pursue continued education and touch perfect strangers during stressful situations in their life. Allowing human compassion to emerge from within provided my inner strength as a critical care nurse. Struggling with lifesaving tasks brings both joy and sorrow any given moment.
