As the incidence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, reach epidemic levels, prevention becomes an increasingly critical component of healthcare policy in the United States. To emphasize improve the quality of life for all Americans, the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council has developed the National Prevention Strategy. In response to this initiative, Prevent Blindness America, the nation s oldest eye health and safety non-profit organization, has developed Vision Preservation and the National Prevention Strategy: A Call to Action. This comprehensive plan emphasizes how the effects of vision impairment cut across chronic co-morbid conditions, injuries, and quality of life. It further demonstrates the importance of prevention services and programs in promoting vision and eye health. In 1908, Prevent Blindness America began as a public health agency dedicated to eliminating preventable blindness in newborns, said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. Vision Preservation and the National Prevention Strategy outlines important efforts that can be taken to protect the vision of all Americans today and for years to come. The plan provides addendums to the four Strategic Directions promoted by the National Prevention Council. Prevent Blindness America is encouraging organizations to take on some of these recommendations to lead to a healthier country that embraces prevention and promotes eye health. Usually the flu shot should be administered by the end of November, but with the flu season going until May, the shot can still be effective and keep you from getting sick.

In this week s Nurses PRN blog, I m going to go into more detail about who should and should not get vaccinated, some side effects, and some locations where you can receive the shot.

There are several factors that you must take into account before deciding if being a traveler is right for you. In this Nurses PRN blog, I m going to discuss what kind of traits you need to be an effective traveling RN/Nurse. I will also discuss the skills you should possess, the interview process, and also things to look out for before you sign any travel assignment contract. Being a traveling RN may be right for some people it is however not right for everyone. You need the right kind of personality and personal skill set to really flourish. First, you need a sense of adventure. As a traveler, you ll be working in many different healthcare facilities. You need to be able to adapt quickly and be comfortable in each new work situation. You also need to be able to socialize with strangers with ease. When you start day one at a new facility they expect you perform at the same level as someone s whose been there for 10 years. You also need to be able to accept different ways of doing procedures. You may have done something a million times at another facility but a new facility may want it done a different way. You need to adapt and be able to accommodate the facility you re currently working at. Here s a quick recap of the skills you need. You need to be adventurous, adaptable, and not be afraid of being the new guy/girl at each new facility you work. As a traveling RN, how often have you gone from state to state only to have to apply for a license in each one? It can definitely be a time consuming repetitive task. That s where the Nurse Licensure Compact or NLC comes in. An NLC allows an RN, LPN, or a LVN to have a single multi-state license, allowing you to practice both physically and electronically in other participating compact states. Allow us to answer a few common questions for you: # Is every state a compact state? No, not at this time, but quite a few states are participating. Here s the list of all participating states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. How do I obtain an NLC? Obtaining an NLC is pretty straightforward. There are just a couple things you need to know before you proceed. You must declare a compact state as your primary state of residency and hold a nursing license in good standing. Beef Stroganoff submitted by Sadie of Appleton, WI Ingredients: 2 lbs stew meat 1 onion 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 can mushrooms ¼ cup ketchup 3 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 8oz sour cream Directions: Brown meat with onion and add all other ingredients (except sour cream) and simmer for 1 hour stirring occasionally.
