2 OVERVIEW Target Audience and Purpose This course is designed for practicing and academic pathologists, fellows, residents, and medical students in the southeast region, particularly those with an interest or involvement in breast pathology. This activity will update the audience about the diagnostic and prognostic aspects of breast pathology, provide information about current reimbursement status for ancillary tests, and explore other changes to practice at the state and national levels. An open-discussion lunch roundtable will be featured, allowing participants the opportunity to share best practices and challenges. Shelley Lecture The North Carolina Society of Pathologists is pleased to again present this educational activity honoring the late William Shelley, MD, former chair of what was then the Charlotte Memorial pathology residency program and founder of what is now Carolinas Pathology Group. Upon Dr. Shelley s untimely death in 1974, a trust was established to offer education to pathologists in his honor. Keynote Speaker The 2016 Shelley Lecturer will be Stuart J. Schnitt, MD, FCAP. Dr. Schnitt is the Director of the Division of Anatomic Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, co-leader of the Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center Breast Program, a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in breast pathology. He did his internship and residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology, also at Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Schnitt has published over 320 original articles, review articles, editorials, commentaries, and book chapters, primarily in the area of breast diseases. He has authored a popular breast pathology textbook entitled Biopsy Interpretation of the Breast, now in its second edition; this book has also been published in Chinese. In addition, he is one of the editors of the 4th Edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Breast, published in Dr. Schnitt is a Past President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology ( ). He has lectured extensively around the world. His research interests and contributions to our understanding of benign breast diseases and breast cancer have been broad, but have largely focused on risk factors for local recurrence in patients with invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ treated with breast conserving therapy, benign breast disease and breast cancer risk, and stromal-epithelial interactions in breast tumor progression. Objectives At the conclusion of this educational activity participants should be able to: Review the latest information on the diagnosis and prognosis of breast cancers. Improve practices in assessment and reporting of breast cancer margins. List ancillary tests that may be useful in workup and prognostication of various conditions of the breast, including spindle cell lesions. Review updates in HER2 testing per ASCO/CAP guidelines. Review reimbursement and utilization issues in the use of ancillary studies. Assess important administrative, financial, legislative and legal issues pertaining to the practice of pathology. AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM hours Credit Statement The Southern Regional AHEC designates this live activity for a maximum of 4.75 AMA PRA Category 1 credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Accreditation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the North Carolina Medical Society through the joint providership of the Southern Regional AHEC and the North Carolina Society of Pathologists. The Southern Regional AHEC is accredited by the NCMS to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

3 2016 ANNUAL MEETING Additional Credit Other health professionals will receive Southern Regional AHEC CEU and/or contact hours and a certificate of attendance from an AMA PRA Category 1 TM activity. These certificates are accepted by the NC boards for physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses. License requirements are subject to change. Southern Regional AHEC recommends that participants contact their licensing board with specific questions. Southern Regional AHEC will provide.5 Continuing Education Units (4.75 contact hours) to participants upon completion of this activity. Registration Information The registration fee for this meeting is $250 per member physician, $375 per nonmember physician, $100 for emeritus/retired physicians, and $125 for allied health professionals/ midlevel providers. Members of neighboring state societies are welcome to register at the NC member rate. As always, residents and medical students may attend the meeting free of charge. Registration fees include the Friday evening reception and dinner for the participant, and Saturday continental breakfast, breaks and lunch for the participant. Fees for the optional Friday afternoon golf outing and guest fees for the Friday dinner are noted on the registration form. To register, complete the registration form in this brochure and return it by March 15 to receive the early-bird rate. Registrations received after that date will be charged a higher fee. Please note that refunds of registration fees will not be made after Friday, April 8. Refunds, less $25, will be made for cancellations received prior to that date.
