7 üto.1 EMPLOYMENT IN THE COMMUNITY SERVICES INDUSTRY: WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? - DATA ANALYSIS (SUGGESTED ANSWERS) Examine each of the following tables and complete the questions. TABLE A - WORKERS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE INDUSTRIES BY AGE GROUP QUESTIONS Source: ABS Labor Force Survey 1. Identify two trends of workers in the community services industries by age group. The year age group is the most consistent with % of employees in all community services industries. The percentage of childcare workers decreases with age. The number of employees working in residential care services and other social assistance services increases from 15 to 54 years of age. 2. What age group are most people employed in residential care services? The age group has the highest proportion of employees working in residential care services, 30.3% 3. Why do you think this is the case? Working hours and positions are flexible ie: more opportunities for part-time work. There is a growing demand for residential services so people decided to continue working. Older workers may enjoy socialising with their clients. They have children and grandchildren of their own so they enjoy the reduced number of working hours. 4. What age group do the greatest number of childcare workers come from? The age group has the highest proportion of employees working in childcare, 26.9% Copyright IVET 2018 Edition 7

8 5. How does this compare to all industries? It is substantially higher than other industries that average 16.7% of employees aged between 15 and 24 years of age. TABLE B - WORKERS IN COMMUNITY SERVICE INDUSTRIES BY SEX QUESTIONS Source(s): ABS Labor Force, Australia, Detailed, Quarterly, May 2011 (cat. no ) 1. What trend can be identified from the graph with regards to workers in the community services industries and sex? There are substantially more females working in all community services industries. 2. Why do you think this is the case? Women generally have more caring and nurturing qualities than males and working in the community services industry requires these qualities. Males may be less willing to accept lower paid jobs. 3. How does this compare with other industries? In all industries males represent a higher percentage of workers than females.
