2 FROM THE DONS DESK As always, welcome to all new residents, relatives, visitors and staff to Jindalee Aged Care Residence. The festive season has come to an end for one more year. We hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and New Year. The celebrations organised here were a great success! Thanks to all the staff that worked so hard to provide everyone with a memorable celebration. Next year we will look at the numbers of relatives wanting to Cheryl Hart (Director of Nursing), Kay Murray (Duty Director of come to lunch from Frangipani and Hoya. Nursing) & Jo Costuna (Director of Nursing) We had to separate the dining areas at the last moment. We may have two separate celebrations next year so that everyone attending can dine in the same area. This will depend on the numbers of people wishing to join in. There was a wonderful bus outing organised by the Health and Leisure Team to visit homes in the evening with light displays over Christmas. There was such positive feedback from all those people that attended. Richard and Nicole Cummins surprised everyone by a stopover at their home in Tuggeranong to admire their Christmas decorating and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and short bread biscuits out the front of their home. Thank you Richard and Nicole! This was really special and very kind of you both to organise this. It was so well received by everyone that went on the bus trip! What a month! The closing of the facility because of a gastroenteris outbreak has been such a burden to residents, visitors and staff. Thank you to everyone for their patience and vigilance throughout the facility closure. Page 2

3 We have worked closely with The Communicable Disease Control in the Department of Social Services. We would like to thank all of our staff for their constant cooperation over this period. We must also remind people to please NOT visit if they are suffering from an illness that can impact on the health of Jindalee residents and staff. It has also been very sad to wish Tracey Cowie, our receptionist of 5 years, farewell, as she pursues a life down the coast. Tracey has been a breath of fresh air to have on our reception staff and the first person people often meet when they come to Jindalee. People often comment on her smiling face and kind words! You will be missed Tracey.but we hope you have a wonderful life down the coast! Cheryl is up on the Gold Coast with family for a week or so. Rest up and enjoy! 4 HEALTH & LEISURE REPORT Happy New Year everybody! We hope you had a joyous Christmas and Santa was good to you! We had a fully packed program over the Christmas period with Christmas parties, musical performances and for the first time; we did a bus drive at night to see the Christmas lights on display in Canberra. Health & Leisure Team Richard Cummins had a week off over Christmas spending his first Christmas with 8 month old son Joshua and wife Nicole. We have included a couple of pictures of the proud dads double. Many residents and relatives have requested some pictures of Joshua in the newsletter. We hope you enjoy looking at them. 5 MONTHS IN REVIEW Melbourne Cup Celebrations To celebrate the Melbourne Cup we organised celebrations on every wing. Residents enjoyed a glass of champagne with platters of cheese, biscuits,fruit and chocolate covered strawberries. We also ran a sweep for the residents and staff- so by the end of the day, we had some very happy punters! Christmas Light Tour In the weeks before Christmas we hired a 25 seat bus to tour around Canberra and look at the Christmas lights on homes in Canberra. We went to Jerrabomberra, Kambah, Theodore & Gordon. The residents were amazed with how much effort people put in to decorate their homes. As an added surprise, we stopped at Richard Cummins house in Theodore. His wife Nicole had made hot chocolate and short bread biscuits for everyone on the bus! It was such a success that it will be on the agenda for every year, just before Christmas Page 5

6 Christmas Lunch Rose Cottage We had another restaurant outing. This time we went to The Rose Cottage where we were served a BBQ style Christmas lunch. There was a large amount of different foods on offer including chicken, steak, ham, prawns and an array of salads. 27 people attended this outing. They are becoming more popular with each visit. We re heading off to Grandmas Bakery on the 29 th January. Let us know if you would like to come along. Volunteers Morning Tea We have a lot of different volunteer groups that come during the year including The Woden Senior Singers, The Red Cross, Delta Dogs and Pet Therapy- just to name a few. We organised a morning tea to offer our sincere thanks for all the time and effort that they put in. Their visits certainly bring joy to the residents here at Jindalee. Page 6

7 Musical Groups and Performances Just prior to the Christmas break, the Health and Leisure Team pop in and perform one weekend. The team dress up and go around to all the wings, singing carols and entertaining. We had a choir from Red Hill School with around 60 students performing. We also had visits from our regular groups including, The Two of Us, Brain Butler, Irish Bill playing the accordion, Sing a Long Sue and Sheila. It was a busy month for entertainers. Christmas and Chinese New Year was celebrated with a visit from Mr Wong and his magic show. After his show, we were entertained by a group of dancers dressed in traditional Chinese costume dancing to classical Chinese music. The residents really enjoyed the show. Page 7

8 Christmas Parties To celebrate Christmas 2014, we organised two Christmas parties. They are becoming more and more popular A,B,C,D,G & J wing resident and visitor party was organised for one date and then another and the other residents, families and friends of H & F wing residents. This year we had a Gold and Silver theme - the tables and reception area looked fabulous! Both parties were served a full Christmas lunch with all the trimmings and for dessert Page 8

9 During the H & F wing Christmas party one of the resident s son and grandson, who are part of a ukulele group, performed Christmas carols. They also did an impressive Australian version of The 12 days of Christmas, which included 5 Kangaroo, 2 snakes are skiing and a kookaburra in a gum tree. It was something a little different and was enjoyed by everybody. Page 9

11 NOTICE BOARD RESIDENT CARE We strive to provide optimum resident care and to ensure Jindalee is a happy and safe facility. Just wait for instruction from the person in charge. There is a fire warden in charge on every shift who will know what to do. Its important to follow their Instruction. Never put yourself in danger. LAUNDRY Jindalee laundry staff label all new clothing as they arrive to Jindalee. Any new items need to go first to the laundry TAXI VOUCHERS The Taxi Subsidy is being changed from vouchers to a photo ID card. Any relatives holding vouchers please contact Jindalee reception for further Information. before 3.30 pm, 7 days a week. Our laundry staff will label them and then redistribute them to the appropriate wings. For all lost clothing items please see the trolley outside the laundry NEWSPAPERS If you would like a newspaper delivered to your room please talk to reception about which newspaper you would like and she will inform you of the cost. 12 HAIR DRESSES We have a hair dresser who attends every Tuesday & Wednesday if you would like an appointment please talk to reception or ask staff member to write in the hair dresses book which is on every wing. BEAUTICIAN SERVICES We have a beautician who provides treatments every Thursday & Friday at a discounted price of $1 per minute. Please ask reception for list of treatment's and prices. LIBRARY SERVICE We have a mobile library service that delivers & picks up library books to resident s rooms. If you would like this service, please talk to a Health and Leisure staff member and they can sign you up for the service Page 12

18 PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement for residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at the Resident s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire. Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation. Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern. Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse, placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee. The Directors of Nursing (DON s) or their delegates review all the forms, investigates the cause of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee s Policy and Procedures are contributing factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the complainant (if not anonymous). All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator s Office.
