1 FIRE / AMBULANCE PERSON (FIXED SHIFT) The Role We are looking to recruit a Fire/Ambulance Person within our Fire/Ambulance Department. Reporting to the on shift Fire/Ambulance Watch Manager, the role will be responsible for implementing the Company s Fire Fighting and Fire Safety Polices in compliance with the Company s Emergency Medical Care and First Aid policies. It will also involve ensuring that the Company s appliances and equipment are maintained to the highest standard and that these are available when required. Key Requirements Attend emergency incident calls in an operational capacity and when necessary, to take charge of such incidents until relieved by a senior member of the team Comply with orders and instructions relating to daily station routines within the Fire and Ambulance Service as applicable, without direct supervision Undertake inspections, examinations and maintenance of all first aid equipment as directed working in conjunction with the Occupational Health Centre for the provision of such equipment For full details, please refer to the job description. Who are we looking for? Suitable applicants will have: A minimum, 2 years experience as either a Paramedic or Ambulance Technician or be a qualified Fire fighter A minimum, 3 GCSE s A-C in Maths, English and Science or equivalent A full clean UK driving licence to include, Group C1 with at least 2 years driving experience The ability to work at heights Practical and academic skills to successfully pass both Fire and Ambulance service basic training and progress to fully qualified Fire fighter and Ambulance Technician status To pass a strict Fire Service Medical and comply with two yearly routine assessments To produce their continued professional portfolio at Interview It would be an advantage to: Be HPC Registered as a Paramedic Have a clean LGV Group C licence Hold a fire fighter related qualification The successful applicant will be allocated 42 hours per week, working two 12 hour days and two 12 hour night shifts in each shift. Until relieved by a senior person to take control of emergency incidents, including scene management and communication with fire and ambulance controls, treating, assessing and managing all presenting complaints To complete daily, weekly and monthly checks, without direct supervision, on all plant and equipment relating to the port fire & ambulance service, ensuring they are fully maintained and ready for use at all times. Consistently strives to meet targets/standards and is able to communicate progress to others in relation to these. Performs with a sense of urgency for the task in hand. Competent in making decisions when required, using all facts available to identify a suitable solution. Identifies and analyses causes not symptoms. Demonstrates a disciplined approach to problem solving. Is performed on a daily basis, evidence of which can be found in staff personal folders. All fire fighting and medical incidents are carried out to strict IHCD,JRCALC & SFRS standards. Attainment of City & Guilds Certificate in working in Confined Space Identify H&S issues at work, minimising the degree of hazard or risk and where required write, inspect and implement method statements, risk assessments and safe systems of work. Ensure that all Hot Work regulations are strictly enforced and that inspections prior to, (and sometimes during) are carried out. Ensure the company s regulations for confined space entry are enforced and that suitable checks are carried out. To provide immediate rescue cover for all high risk confined space working. Financial Performance To perform gas tests on containers within the port estate (normally 70 & 94 shed) at any given time without any prior notice. Close relations with Customs/Border force agencies. Provides support to others within the team, department and wider organisation. Demonstrates positive supportive behaviours. Assist in the smooth on going container operations & productivity. To carry out all tests, inspections, examinations and maintenance of fire alarm & fire fighting systems and installations at the time specified by the company or legal requirements. Consistently strives to earn the confidence of others through conscious management of relationships and tasks. Observation by Watch Manager To carry out inspections, examinations & maintenance of all first aid equipment, front line vehicles and their content as Completed to CQC (Care Quality Commission)
3 directed in line with infection, prevention & control (IPC) and care quality commission (CQC) and work in conjunction with the staff of the occupational health department in the provision of such equipment. Standards To generally assist safety officers in the pursuance of accident prevention or certain investigations into the cause of accidents, fires or other emergency incidents. To assist internal company departments with internal matters regarding claims port wide. Improvement Ensure compliance to all policies, procedures, standard operating procedures and safe system of work (SSOW), with recommendations for action and continuous improvement. Each individual will be trained as an explosive security officer and oversee the safe handling of explosive cargo being shipped to and from and within the port estate. To ensure all working at height training, maintenance, record keeping is done in accordance with strict company, health & safety & legal requirements. Maintain on going CPD activities in line with HCPC requirements Demonstrates an ability to support improvement processes. Approaches change with a positive attitude and supportive behaviours. Seeks and acts on feedback, growing their capability and knowledge, identifying their own training and development needs Work in line with local authority standards Train & work to industry expected standards, to complete annual professional update (PU) All fire fighters must attend a risk critical 3 day course within the SFRS (Suffolk fire and rescue service) and pass People Responsible for health, safety, wellbeing & welfare of casualty s and others affected by medical, fire and other such emergency s including third parties on or off the dock estate. Teach and produce lesson plans for port employees in confined space as per train the trainer. Is a credible, professional colleague to other employees and outside agencies, through knowledge, behaviour and confidence. Is effective in being able to share information and ideas with others Feedback from stakeholders and Watch manager observation Staff personal folder To carry out training of port employees in basic fire awareness, hand held fire fighting equipment, fire warden and first responder first aid as required by the company legislation. Instruct and make competent port employees in the safe practice of working in confined spaces, including teaching competence in producing risk assessments and method statements (SSOW). Considers their approach for their colleagues so they are able to deliver the most effective method of working. Understands and appreciates the concept of diversity.
4 Responsibility for People Responsibility for Assets Responsibility for Finance Decision Making Communication Experience & Knowledge Qualifications Responsible for their own, colleagues & others safety whilst attending any emergency incident at the port including third parties including outside contractors. Supervision of staff during their training period (including preceptorship) influencing their development and guiding them through clinical procedures. Daily checks of the vehicles and its content whilst in their direct control. Set procedures on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis to be completed and documented. Practice in accordance with current legislation governing the use of medicines, prescription only medicines, including the storage/security and administration of controlled drugs. Carry out daily equipment checks, maintain and clean equipment following patient use using the infection control policy. Ensure efficient use of medical supplies ensuring adequate levels are available throughout the shift. Personal duty of care only Responsible for making complex risk critical decisions at any given time which is appropriate to the patient s needs at that time. Responsible for making life threatening decisions in potentially high stressful situations, with a wide range of options and adopting the correct Fire/Medical procedure for all varying situations. Continual exchange of information of both internal and external groups and individuals Liaison with emergency services, external agencies, and internal departments with a degree of influence and direction during emergency situations. To carry out training of both FDRC employees and outside organisations for induction, first aid at work courses. All personnel, on occasion, have to manage and deal with persons who are injured and in shock, where there maybe barriers to an understanding and where the need for informed consent is essential and manage appropriately. Must at all times communicate to all involved in a calm, professional capacity, especially whilst in emergency situation. At least 2 years experience as either a Paramedic or Ambulance Technician or be a Qualified Fire fighter Have both practical and academic skills to successfully pass both Fire and Ambulance Service basic training and progress to fully qualified Fire fighter and Ambulance Technician by completing any development programme in force at the time. Undertake all mandatory training, re-certification and any advancement in patient care training commensurate with the Paramedic profession in order to maintain registration as a Registered Paramedic in accordance with HCPC requirements. Maintain awareness of current developments and initiatives, such as National Health Service Frameworks, which impact on patient care and give time targets for treatment. Knowledge of the local roads, buildings and container park locations within the port estate and Fire Station response area. -Desired Requirements on Recruitment; Must be numerate and literate with GSCE A-C pass grades in English, Maths and Biology/Science or equivalent. -Must have a full clean driving licence to include Group C1 with at least 2 years driving experience. -A clean LGV Group C licence would be an advantage. On Appointment; Must undertake Fire fighter/ambulance Technician Development Programmes to attain qualified status (taking over a year to gather relevant evidence/ key skills for quarterly reviews) Will be required to undertake other training to operate Port Plant and Equipment to resolve emergency incidents. Must undertake Continuous Personal Development and Core Theme Training with the ambulance and fire service. Must attend annual EEAS two day PU (professional update) Must attend 3-day risk critical training at Wattisham or equivalent. Mental Demands -May be exposed to traumatic and stressful incidents, and must have the ability to make decisions in an unpredictable environment. -Must have a good understanding and awareness of their surroundings when attending emergency incidents. -Must be able to remain calm and controlled when exposed to stressful/ upsetting, and highly emotive situations.
