2 First otation (January 17 March 3) Second otation (March 6 May 4) 301 & 302: UWHC- D6/5- Pulmonary, General Med, IMC D6/5 is a 32 bed unit for patients under the care of pulmonary, general medicine, and hospitalist services. Patients on this unit will have a wide variety of diagnoses/disorders. Some of the typical diagnoses are: COPD, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, pancreatitis, GI bleed, EOH withdrawal, Crohn s disease, and liver failure. 3 First otation (January 17 March 3) Second otation (March 6 May 4) 303 & 304: St Mary s- 8SW- espiratory, Medical, IMC 8SW is a busy 32 bed unit at St. Mary s Hospital that serves Pulmonary/Medical patients. his unit is fast paced with a variety of diagnoses including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Pneumonia, or Pulmonary Emboli (PE). Many patients also have renal failure and diabetes as well as other chronic illnesses. he patients on this unit may have urinary catheters, PEG tubes, chest tubes, CPAP and BiPAP machines, PICC/Midline catheters and large diabetic wounds. his is a great unit to learn on and the staff is friendly and welcoming to the nursing students. 303 Liz Collins St. Mary s Hospital - 8 SW espiratory & Intermediate Care uesday uesday Liz Collins St. Mary s Hospital - 8 SW espiratory & Intermediate Care hursday Jan hursday March & 306: UWHC- F4/4 and B64- rauma & Ortho rauma Surgery F4/4 consists of 18 general care and 8 intermediate care (IMC) beds for acutely ill patients that have suffered a trauma or required a surgical intervention. he IMC also accepts acute patients (rapid responses) from general care units throughout the hospital. IMC patients are walking a fine line of recovery versus worsening of their conditions and require more frequent nursing monitoring and care. rauma is more than broken legs and arms, it can also be brain injury, facial trauma, spinal cord injury, and chest trauma, to name a few conditions. Each patient will present with his/her own unique story, injuries, treatments, potential complications, and nursing interventions. 4 First otation (January 17 March 3) Second otation (March 6 May 4) 307: UWHC- F6/6- Gyn, Urology, EN, Plastics On F6/6, you will participate in postoperative care of EN, gynecology and urology patients, as well as patients requiring plastic and reconstructive surgery. Many patients are dealing with a new diagnosis of cancer. Nurses on this unit provide specialized care following innovative surgical procedures. Patient and family teaching is a vital aspect of nursing care on these units, as is well-organized discharge planning. 307 Paula Jarzemsky F6/6 - Gyn/Urology, EN/Plastics W Wednesday Jan 18 Off unit shadow experience required on one uesday (BD) W Wednesday March 8 Off unit shadow experience required on one uesday (BD) 308: American Family Children s- P5 American Family Children s Hospital unit P5 is a 24 bed acute care pediatric medical-surgical unit. Children admitted to P5 typically have such disorders as infections, cerebral palsy, cardiac and pulmonary problems (asthma, SV, pneumonia, CF), orthopedic and trauma injuries, rehabilitation, and other surgical conditions. Many of the patients have chronic illnesses and have had repeated hospitalizations. hey are familiar with staff, unit and hospital routine and are in various stages of coping with their conditions. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate in their child s care during the hospitalization, though are not always available. Due to the nature of their illnesses, many patients have central lines, undergo intense treatments, and experience various psychological problems. here is much emphasis on attending to the emotional as well as the physical needs of the child. 308 Jenn Drake American Family Children s Hospital P5 hursday Jan 19 Off unit shadow experiences may be required on off days. hursday March 9 Off unit shadow experiences may be required on off days. 5 First otation (January 17 March 3) Second otation (March 6 May 4) 309: UWHC- F4/6- General Surgery and Bariatric Center of Excellence his unit requires a broad range of medical and surgical nursing skills and encompasses a wide variety of gastrointestinal illnesses and treatments as well as wound and nutrition management. F4/6 is a 28-bed surgical unit for patients with chronic and acute GI conditions who require surgery to resolve. Examples of these conditions include appendicitis, Crohn s Disease or Ulcerative colitis, pancreatic cancer, and morbid obesity. 309 Moira Cattapan F4/6 General Surgery uesday uesday 310: he American Center- General Medicine/IMC Each unit in the American Center has 27 beds. 4 beds are IMC hard wired rooms, all rooms can become IMC capable with eicu care mobile cart. We have recently converted one room on each floor for a dialysis suite. he 5 th floor of the American Center houses the Physical therapy gym. ypically the orthopedic patients on placed on this floor. ypes of orthopedic surgeries include total joint replacements (knee, hip and shoulder), and spines (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) and some minor sport injuries. here are also general surgeries performed at the American Center. A specialized type of surgery being performed at the American Center is the weight management surgery. his is a very busy unit with a high turnover in patient population (admissions & discharges). he busiest time during the day starts when post-operative patients come to the unit and patients are still discharging, this is around and it continues until the last of the post ops return around he O schedule is usually full and planned out months in advance; Mondays, uesdays, Wednesdays and hursdays are very busy operating days with an average about 10 surgeries a day. Pain management is an important part of nursing care on this unit. In addition to the busy surgery schedule, we have to be ready to take medicine patients from the E. he medical patient can be unpredictable-ranging from a short stay patient in for observation to the IMC admission with a large range of medical diagnoses. 310 Laura Sasse he American Center Orthopedic Surgery uesday uesday Key: =uesday; W=Wednesday; =hursday; F=Friday Page 5 of 9

Patients on this unit have a wide variety of cardiac, medical, and vascular disorders. Examples of patient diagnoses are: atrial fibrillation, chest pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), NSEMI, pneumonia, heart failure, GI bleed, diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients on this unit range in illness from intermediate to general levels of care. 311 Paula Woywod Meriter Hospital 11 ower Heart and Vascular M uesday Additional off unit shadow experiences may be required at other times. M Monday March 6 Additional off unit shadow experiences may be required at other times. 312: UWHC- D4/4- General Medicine D4/4 is a 28 bed unit of general medicine and hospitalist patients with varied diagnoses including cellulitis, PE/DV, syncope, upper respiratory infections such as pneumonia, pancreatitis, GI bleeds, alcohol withdrawal, COPD and CHF. his unit serves a wide range of patient ages, severity of illness, and diagnoses. 312 Melissa Anibas D4/4 General Medical W Wednesday Jan 18 W Wednesday March & 314: UWHC- B6/6- Oncology, Hematology, Stem Cell ransplant & Palliative Care B6/6 is a 39-bed unit. We care for acutely ill and chronically ill patients with cancer. Oncology patients have solid tumor malignancies (lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.). he hematology and stem cell transplant (SC or BM/bone marrow transplant ) patients have a variety of illnesses, but most are hematological malignancies such as leukemia and lymphomas. Our palliative care patients have a variety of conditions (end stage diseases affecting the liver, kidney, heart, as well as cancer, hemorrhagic strokes, etc.). Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach to specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses, with a focus on providing patients with relief from symptoms (pain, physical and psychological stress). he level of acuity varies from self-care patients who are hospitalized because of immunosuppression to unstable patients who may become septic from infections, cardiovascularly deteriorate, or have some other very serious complication related to their disease or treatment. Most patients are years old with some young adults 18-30; male and female about equal. At any given time, about ½ the patients on this unit have a central line. 8 First otation (January 17 March 3) Second otation (March 6 May 4) 316: UWHC- D4/5 and F4/5- Heart and Vascular and Cardiac Medicine D4/5 is a 15-bed surgical unit for patients with vascular conditions, most who require surgery to fix. Examples of patient conditions include aneurysm repairs, blockages in the leg, neck or arm vessels, and non-healing wounds. F4/5 consists of 16 beds for acutely ill medical patients that have suffered a cardiac event requiring additional interventions. Cardiac medical is more than myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), it can also be congestive heart failure, pacemaker placement, syncope and dysrhythmias, to name a few conditions. 316 Julie Astrella D4/5 - Heart & Vascular & F4/5 - Cardiac Medical uesday Clinical dates: 1/19, 1/20 (from ), 1/31, 2/2, 2/14, 2/16, 2/28 Additional 12-hours of observational experience will be arranged during off clinical weeks. hursday March Clinical dates: 3/10 (from ), 3/14, 3/28, 3/30, 4/11, 4/13, 4/25, 4/27 Additional 12-hours of observational experience will be arranged during off clinical weeks. 317: UWHC- D4/5 and F4/5- Heart and Vascular and Cardiac Medicine F4/5 is a 16 bed cardiac medical unit which sees adult patients admitted with CHF, patients with Myocardial Infarctions (heart attacks), post-cardiac transplant, Syncope, Pacers, ICDs, etc. D4/5 is a 15 bed Heart and Vascular Unit which sees patients admitted s/p AAA, AA, EVA, Fem-Fem Bypass, Aorta-Fem Bypass, Carotid Endarts, Carotid Stenting, PA, and other vascular surgical and cath lab. (Surgical unit) You will have the opportunity to shadow a nurse in the cardiac cath lab and possibly to help a patient recover in the recovery room by doing vitals and other cares. his experience will help you to see the continuum of care that patients experience and the different types of nursing there are. Patients on this unit will have a wide variety of disorders/diagnoses, although most will have complex medical vs. surgical problems. he staff on 4A enjoy working with students. hey are dedicated and willing to assist you with your education. As a Nursing student, you will have the opportunity to practice technical skills, psychosocial skills, and problem-solve in a variety of clinical situations.
