This report intends to serve as a tool for those of us invested in our region s workforce, and to help us build a collaborative plan for near and long-term employment needs. Leaders across the region feel a sense of urgency to fill critical positions in their respective organizations, just as our education sector understands the need for alignment between skills supply and skills demand. To best address our community s labor needs, it is critical that we have a data-driven approach which captures the regional employment needs in our target sectors. While we intend to cover each of our target industries in the future, we have collectively with our partners and stakeholders decided to prioritize our focus and report on Information Technology, Healthcare and Manufacturing. This Jobs Report provides analysis of the market demand by job posting and the respective education levels and skills required (and hired) in each industry. This information serves to align our education and workforce training programs in direct response to industry demand. The report should inspire dialogue and action in the community. A few possible outcomes: Education and training programs may pivot certification and degree plans to better align with industry-identified skills. Residents of San Antonio may have a better understanding of available careers which provide economic mobility and the skills valued by employers. Workforce development is the cornerstone of a thriving economy. From grade school teacher to policymaker, we collectively own the improvement of our workforce, economy and quality of life for our residents. The data in this report is meant to aid us in decision making and challenge us to ask difficult questions of ourselves toward the common goal of attracting, retaining and cultivating the talent that will lead us to our full potential as a thriving global economy. 3 OVERVIEW AVAILABLE JOB POSTINGS This report attempts to inform on the local hiring activities, the education levels and wages associated with the top job postings within the IT, Manufacturing and Healthcare sectors. 17% of residents [or incumbent workforce (25+)] in the San Antonio-New Braunfels MSA have a bachelor s degree, compared to the national average of 19%. 7.8% hold an associate degree, compared to the national average of 8.2%. As we continue to learn from non-traditional educational partners, we will understand, quantify and report skills attained from these resources. This report also welcomes conversation concerning workforce participation, underemployed workforce and evolving skills needs in our key industries. JOB MARKET Between August 2017 and January 2018, the San Antonio-New Braunfels MSA had 65,597 online job postings in IT, Manufacturing and Healthcare. This is a 5.8% dip from the same time period the previous year. This report sources online job postings only. As the report evolves beyond our initial baseline year (2018), industry partners will inform additional sources to enrich the data. 4 JOB MARKET INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY In 2017, approximately 33,884 MSA residents worked in IT. The majority of jobs were in Computer Systems Design, Data Processing, Hosting, and Related Services with a median compensation of $78,042 compared to the national median wage of $82,826. IT jobs INCREASED by 3,97o from (13.3%), outpacing the national growth rate of 12.3%. The jobs are projected to INCREASE by 4,o58 (12%) from , outpacing the national projected growth rate of 9.2%. There were 3,22o RELEVANT POSTSECONDARY COMPLETIONS from 18 institutions in the region in There were 20,363 unique job postings in the IT industry between August 2017 and January The monthly average during this period was 3,394 postings, with 1,464 hires. This post-to-hire ratio (43%), along with continued growth in the gap between expected and actual employment over the next five years, increases the importance of addressing supply challenges. During the same period the previous year, there were 3,586 average monthly postings and 1,432 hires or about 40% of postings were filled. 6 JOB POSTINGS MARKET MANUFACTURING In 2017, 39,734 MSA residents worked in manufacturing. During that time, the median wage for these jobs was $42,952, which was higher than the national average of $40,789. Manufacturing jobs INCREASED by 3,134 (8.6%) from , outpacing the national growth rate of 4.7%. The occupations are projected to INCREASE by 3,199 from (8.1%), outpacing the national projected growth rate of 3.0%. There were 3,o55 RELEVANT POSTSECONDARY COMPLETIONS from 18 institutions in the region in From August 2017 to January 2018, there were 6,123 total unique online job postings for manufacturing positions in the MSA. In the average month, the area had 1,021 unique job postings for these occupations, but 2,382 positions were filled. During the same time period the previous year, there were 1,107 monthly postings and about 2,341 hires. In this case, the positions filled outnumber the postings. This could mean that some occupations (usually skilled trades) do not customarily post jobs online and are therefore underrepresented by the postings. Additional data points are necessary to tell a more complete story for manufacturing talent supply and demand. Most workers held jobs in the General Medical and Surgical Hospitals disciplines. The median compensation for this sector in the MSA was $47,840, compared to the national median wage of $48,568. Healthcare jobs INCREASED by 8,758 from (12.2%), outpacing the national growth rate of 8.7%. The jobs are projected to INCREASE by 13,o94 (16.2%) from , which is higher than the national projected growth rate, 10.4%. There were 5,52o RELEVANT POSTSECONDARY COMPLETIONS from 28 institutions in the region in Between August 2017 and January 2018, there were 39,311 unique online job postings in the healthcare industry. On average, there were 6,558 monthly postings and 3,983 hires, or about 60% of the jobs filled. This indicates an unmet demand for these occupations over the last 6 months. This also generally means competition to hire qualified individuals may be higher. During the same period the previous year, there were 6,916 average monthly postings and 3,890 hires or about 56% of posting were filled. 10 DATA DEFINITIONS Unique Job Postings denotes the number of job advertisements listed by different companies on online career sites or job boards after duplicates have been removed. This process ensures a job posting is counted only once when listed on multiple career sites or jobs boards. Hires reflect when an individual s Social Security number appears on a company s payroll and was not there the quarter before as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau s Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) program. Openings refers to the change in new jobs and replacement jobs as estimated by Economic Modeling Specialists, Intl. (EMSI). New Jobs estimates the change in the total number of workers employed in an occupation. Replacement Jobs estimates the workers that are permanently leaving an occupation. The sum of new jobs and replacement jobs indicates openings. Essential s are the occupation-specific skills appearing most frequently in job postings. Marketable s are common-ground skills not necessarily related to a specific occupation, but frequently required for a given role in job postings. SOURCE The SA Works Biannual Jobs Report uses data from Economic Modeling Specialists, Intl. (EMSI), ( Class of Worker) and independent industry lead primary sources. EMSI is a demographic service provider and economic indicator of labor market data in the United States. EMSI produces its data based on data supplied by publicly accessed sources from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Census Bureau and US Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
