Many hoteliers are saying that they are expecting this to be their busiest year with events happening throughout the year that are sure to attract extra visitors from all around. The Lord Elgin Hotel General Manager mentioned that they will be hiring extra staff to cope with the increased demand. The Lord Elgin also completed a 10 million dollar renovation to ensure that the hotel is ready. Nov 14, 2016 Ottawa Business Journal Ottawa-Gatineau economy forecast to grow 2.2% in 2017 Robust construction activity, an expanding federal government and an influx of visitors attending Canada s 150th anniversary celebrations will help Ottawa-Gatineau s economy expand at its fastest pace in seven years in 2017, the Conference Board of Canada said Monday. LOSSES Jan 11, 2017 Ottawa Citizen Don Cherry's Nepean restaurant closes Only one Don Cherry s Sports Grill remains open. The Nepean location of the franchise shut down after waning foot traffic and increased costs. The closure meant that 25 people had to be laid off. This also marks the third Don Cherry s Sports Grill to shut its doors. Jan 3, 2017 Ottawa Citizen Elgin Street's Fresco bistro and Guest Room cocktail lounge to close Thursday Another Elgin street location has shut its doors for business. Fresco Bistro Italiano closed its doors on January 5 th after 25 years of service. The small franchise had two locations; the other on Hazeldean Road in the city s westend shut down on January 1 st. TRENDS/PROJECTIONS Nov 1, 2016 Ottawa Business Journal Ottawa hotels lobby for licensing of Airbnb landlords With the number of Airbnb rentals in Ottawa proliferating, the city s hoteliers association says it s increasing pressure on government officials to introduce licensing requirements for the short-term rental of private residences. Jul 2016 McKinsey & Company Where machines could replace humans and where they can t (yet) Discusses the potential for automation in the food service sector. For quite some time now, cafeterias have been seeing an increase in automation with automatic checkout systems; even automatic hamburger fryers have been created. Currently available technology has the capacity to replace many aspects of kitchen work; management just needs to make the decision to implement this technology. Low costs of labour is protecting cooks and kitchen helpers right now, as many are willing to work cheaply, and automation has a heavy upfront cost which many businesses are not willing to implement right away.
