4 Individual Fellowship (IF) in nutshell It provides financial support for individual experienced researchers (ER) from all over the world who want to work in host organisations established in EU Member States (MS) or Associated Countries AC. It enhances the creative and innovative potential of experienced researchers (ERs) in both the academic and non-academic sectors Individual, trans-national fellowships are awarded to the most promising researchers of any nationality 4
5 IF: key features Any experienced researcher may submit only one proposal per Call deadline (submission by the host in accordance with the ER, i.e. the proposal writer!) within a host in Europe Focus on career development, not necessarily experience. European or global scheme 5
6 Eligible host organisations The chosen host organisation that recruits, supervises and assures the training of the researcher, and appoints the scientist in charge, is based in Europe Member States or Associated Countries! 6

8 ELIGIBLE RESEARCHERS EXPERIENCED RESEARCHER Researchers must be, at the date of the call deadline, in possession of a doctoral degree or has at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience 8
9 Mobility of researchers to/from Europe Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the Call deadline and/or the date of recruitment 9
10 IF: European or Global IF European Fellowship: provides financial support for ERs who want to work in host organisations established in EU MS or AC - duration months IF Global Fellowship: includes an initial period spent in a partner organisation located in a TC - duration between 24/36 months (12-24 months for the outgoing phase plus 12 months compulsory return phase in Europe) 10

12 European or Global: how it works? European Fellowships 1 2 years Global Fellowships 2 3 years (incl. 12 months back in Europe)
13 Standard European Fellowships (EF-ST): how it works The researcher must be an experienced researcher of any nationality. Proposals will be evaluated in one of the 8 scientific panels, or by 3 multidisciplinary panels: The researcher must move or have moved from any country to Europe where the beneficiary is located Mobility rule applies - Career Restart Panel (EF-CAR) - Society & Enterprise Panel (EF-SE)- beneficiary from the non-academic sector - Reintegration Panel (EF-RI): ER must be a national or long-term resident of a MS or AC 13
14 Evaluation scientific panels IF: eligible researchers Proposals will be evaluated in one of the 8 scientific panels: 14
15 Career restart panel To resume research in Europe after a career break, e.g. after parental leave, is ensured via a separate multi-disciplinary career restart panel of the European Fellowships. The researcher must move or have moved from any country to the MS or AC where the beneficiary is located. Specifically: The researcher cannot have resided or carried out the main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary for more than three years in the five years immediately before the call deadline The experienced researcher must have had a career break in research, i.e. not active in research for a continuous period of 12 months within the eighteen months immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals (between 13 April 2017 and 12 September 2018). 15
16 Society & Enterprise Panel (EF-SE) A multidisciplinary panel dedicated to career opportunities for researchers seeking to work on research and innovation projects in an organisation from the non-academic sector The researcher must move or have moved from any country to the MS or AC where the beneficiary is located. Specifically: The researcher cannot have resided or carried out the main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary for more than three years in the five years immediately before the call deadline 16
17 Reintegration Panel (EF-RI) The experienced researcher must be a national or long-term resident of a MS/AC A period of legal and continuous residence within EU Member States or Horizon 2020 Associated Countries of at least 5 consecutive years A multidisciplinary panel dedicated to researchers who wish to return and reintegrate in a longer term research position in Europe The researcher must move or have moved directly from a TC to the MS or AC where the beneficiary is located. Specifically: -The researcher cannot have resided or carried out the main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary for more than three years in the five years immediately before the call deadline. 17

21 Proposals must be submitted electronically, using the Electronic Submission Services (EPSS) of the European Commission, accessible from the call page on the Participant Portal. In Part A there are certain administrative details that constitutes an integral part of the proposal. Details of the work you intend to carry out is described in Part B 21

26 Section 3: Budget Applicants must enter the duration of the fellowship and the system will automatically calculate an indicative action budget based on the number of months (for GF separate values for each phase), country of the beneficiary (and country of partner organisation for GF) and the family situation as at the deadline of the submission of proposals Care should be taken when entering the data for the budget. Experts will not comment on the budget but will evaluate the planned duration of each element of the fellowship under the Implementation criterion. 26

28 PART B OF THE PROPOSAL 28
29 Part B of the Proposal-some basic instructions The maximum total length of sections 1 to 3 of Part B of the proposal is 10 pages. Experts will be instructed to disregard any excess pages above the 10 page limit Literature references should be listed in footnotes, font size 8 or 9. All footnotes will count towards the page limit!!! The minimum font size allowed is 11 points. The page size is A4, and all margins (top, bottom, left, right) should be at least 15 mm (not including any footers or headers) Ensure that the font chosen is clearly readable (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman) 29
30 Excellence Impact Implementation Quality, innovative aspects and credibility of the research (including inter/multidisciplinary aspects) Enhancing research- and innovation-related human resources, skills and working conditions to realise the potential of individuals and to provide new career perspectives Overall coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources Clarity and quality of transfer of knowledge/training for the development of researcher in light of the research objectives Effectiveness of the proposed measures for communication and results dissemination Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including quality management and risk management Quality of the supervision and the hosting arrangements Appropriateness of the institutional environment (infrastructure) Capacity of the researcher to reach or re-enforce a position of professional maturity in research Competences, experience and complementarity of the participating organisations and institutional commitment
31 2.1 Quality, innovative aspects and credibility of the research (including inter/multidisciplinary aspects) Research methodology and approach Originality and innovative aspects of the research programme Focus on how the high-quality, novel research is the most likely to open up the best career possibilities for the Experienced Researcher and new collaboration opportunities for the host organisation(s). 31
32 2.2 Clarity and quality of transfer of knowledge How the experienced researcher will gain new knowledge from the hosting organisation(s) during the fellowship Outline the capacity for transferring the knowledge, previously acquired by the researcher, to the host organisation
33 2.3 Quality of the supervision and the hosting arrangements Information regarding the scientist in charge must include the level of experience on the research topic proposed and document its track record of work. Information provided should include projects, publications, patents and any other relevant results Show that you will be well integrated within the hosting organisation(s) What practical arrangements are in place at the host organization (welcome office?) 33
34 2.4 Capacity of the researcher to reach and re-enforce a position of professional maturity in research Fellowships will be awarded to the most talented researchers as shown by their ideas and their track record, where it is a fair indicator given their level of experience 5 pages CV/track record 34

Impact 3.1 Enhancing research- and innovation-related human resources, skills, and working conditions to realise the potential of individuals and to provide new career perspectives The impact of the research and training on the your career The fellowship, including any secondments in Europe, should maximise the impact on the researcher s activity on European society, including the science base and/or the economy 35
36 3.2 Effectiveness of the proposed measures for communication and results dissemination Communication and public engagement strategy Dissemination of the research results Exploitation of results and intellectual property 36
37 4. Implementation 4.1 Overall coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources Work Packages description List of major deliverables List of major milestones Secondments, if applicable 37
38 CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLAN Not to be included in the proposal, but part of the project implementation It should aim at achieving a realistic and well-defined objective in terms of career advancement (e.g. attaining a leading independent position) or resuming a research career after a break. The plan should be devised with the final outcome to develop and significantly widen the competences of the experienced researcher, particularly in terms of multi/interdisciplinary expertise, inter-sectoral experience and transferable skills. 38
39 4.2 Appropriateness of the management structure Project organisation and management structure, including the financial management strategy, as well as the progress monitoring mechanisms Risks that might endanger reaching the project's objectives and the contingency plans to be put in place should risk occur (IPR!!) 39
40 4.3 Appropriateness of the institutional environment (infrastructure) Description of the host and its main tasks Explain why the fellowship has the maximum chance of a successful outcome. 40
41 4.4 Competences, experience/complementarity of participating organisations and institutional commitment How the fellowship will be beneficial for both the fellow and the host-s REAL commitment of any partner organisation-s to the programme 41
