2 Region 6 Regional Prosperity Plan Update During September, staff received over 130 projects in response to a Call for Projects that went out to all local units of government in the seven county Region. Projects varied in nature, from quality of life to infrastructure and from economic development to education. These projects will be included in the I-69 International Trade Corridor s CEDS and the Region 6 Regional Prosperity Plan. A Region 6 Steering Committee meeting was held on September 11 th and included updates from Upjohn Institute. Upjohn Institute discussed what they heard on the listening tour so far, including the challenges (lack of funding, disconnect with Flint, lack of regional identity, education/workforce), strengths (collaboration among and within counties, colleges, education, workforce development), assets (airport, diversity of businesses, water pipeline) and the one big thing that would make a difference in the region (an incubator center, transportation and logistics growth and expansion, more funding). The 2015 Regional Prosperity Initiative funding application was released and staff has started working on gathering information for the application, which is due back to the state by November 1 st. The Region 6 Charrette was held October 2 nd and 3 rd at the American Legion in Lapeer, with about 50 people in attendance the first day and about 35 people the second day. The two days involved small group activities, including identifying the important strengths, challenges and opportunities of the Region; an opportunity to hear from Chris Harkins, Director of Policy Initiatives and Government Affairs from the Michigan Budget Office; and, development of goal statements and objectives, project ideas and potential steps for implementing those project ideas. 3 Letter of Support for Region 6 Regional Prosperity 2015 Application The Regional Prosperity Initiative (RPI) is a voluntary grant process that encourages local private, public and non-profit partners to create vibrant regional economies. For the second year (FY 2015), the Governor s budget includes grant funds for the RPI. Region 6 will apply for $250,000 to be used to assist with the implementation of projects and strategies outlined in the Region 6 Regional Prosperity 5-Year Plan. Applications for 2015 funding are due to the State November 1, In FY 2014, GLS Region V applied for and received $250,000 of RPI funding on behalf of Region 6, which includes Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair and Tuscola counties. The Region 6 Steering Committee has met monthly since April 2014 and is in the final stages of completing a Region 6 Regional Prosperity 5-Year Plan. Currently, Letters of Support for the 2015 Region 6 Regional Prosperity application are being requested. At this time, we are requesting the Community and Economic Development Committee to approve Chairperson Jamie Curtis to sign a Letter of Support for the Regional Prosperity Initiative application submission.
