The Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders in Innovation Fellowships Programme: Call for Mentors Deadline for applications: Monday 22 nd December, 2014 The Royal Academy of Engineering Prince Philip House 3 Carlton House Terrace London SW1Y 5DG 1

1 Introduction 1.1 Overview As the UK s national academy for engineering and a registered charity, the Royal Academy of Engineering ( The Academy ) brings together the most successful and talented engineers from across the engineering sectors to advance and promote excellence in engineering. As part of its mission, The Academy supports UK technology entrepreneurs through a variety of fellowships and prizes 1, at the same time connecting them to The Academy s Enterprise Hub, a network of technology innovators, researcher entrepreneurs, and senior industrialists driving and supporting world class innovation 2. The Academy is a formal partner of the UK Government s Newton Fund, which is part of the UK s official overseas development assistance (ODA), and aims to develop international science and innovation partnerships that promote the economic development and welfare of developing countries 3. This document relates to one of the programmes the Academy is delivering as part of the Newton Fund: Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF). The primary objective of the LIF programme is to build the capacity of researchers, within a number of partner countries of the Newton Fund, for entrepreneurship and commercialisation of their research. The programme is aimed at researchers within those countries who are at the point of developing a business proposition for their innovation. The programme will bring a cohort of these researchers selected on the basis of the excellence of their research, the potential of their innovation, and their qualities as an applicant to the UK. During a residential programme, each cohort will benefit from a focussed period of training in entrepreneurship, time and access to expert mentors in developing their business plans, and the opportunity to work in teams on a genuine challenge or opportunity faced by a UK-based technology driven organisation. The Academy is seeking a number of expert mentors to work with participants in the LIF programme, for a number of cohorts, in the period February to March This document outlines The Academy s requirements for these mentors. Mentors will be paid at a rate of 100/hour. 1.2 Contact details Please send all applications, and direct any questions regarding this document, to: Shaarad Sharma Royal Academy of Engineering Prince Philip House 3 Carlton House Terrace London SW1Y 5DG Tel: shaarad.sharma@raeng.org.uk 1 See: 2 See: 3 See: 2

2 Statement of requirements 2.1 Overview The Academy will run Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) programmes with a number of Newton Fund partner countries 4 in financial year 2014/15. The Academy is still currently in negotiation to confirm which of these countries (and, in each case, how many cohorts) will take part in the LIF programme. At this time, we expect to run 10 LIF programmes in the period February to March 2015, starting on the following dates (all Mondays): Start date 09 February February February March March March March 2015 Each LIF programme will be attended by a cohort of around 15 researchers ( fellows ) from the same partner country. Most fellows will be full-time researchers, at any career stage, based at universities or government research institutes within the partner country. Each will have a new innovation or technology, resulting from their research, which is at the point of commercialisation. Fellows will be selected by the partner country on the basis of the excellence of their research, the potential of their innovation, and their potential as an entrepreneur. Each cohort will travel to the UK to undertake an eight-day residential programme of training and mentoring (the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships programme). The structure and content of the programme will be the same for each cohort, and will comprise two major elements. The first element (days 1-5) is a tailored, week-long training programme in entrepreneurship and innovation leadership, hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering and delivered by expert trainers. The second element of the LIF programme is a facilitated, three-day group project (case study), which will take place in the second week (on days 6-8). This call relates to the first element, a tailored week-long training programme in the essentials of entrepreneurship and innovation leadership. 2.2 LIF training programme The week long course will be delivered by expert trainers covering skills and knowledge that are transferable to a partner country context including business modelling, customer development, negotiation, and presentation/pitch training. During the five days, the fellows will also have the opportunity to work on their own business plans with the support of expert mentors. The mentors will have a strong track record in the commercialisation of technology. They will have direct experience of starting up or developing new businesses, ideally in the technology sector, and will be able to share their experience and 4 The countries partnering with the UK on the Newton Fund are: India, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil. The countries that are most likely to participate in The Academy s Leaders in Innovation Fellowship programme in financial year 2014/15 are: Brazil, Chile, India, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. 3

provide advice to the LIF fellows in various aspects of business planning. Each cohort of 15 fellows will be supported by three such mentors, recruited by The Academy. For successive cohorts of 15 fellows, the training programme will start on a Monday morning and run for five days. It will take place in a central London venue, hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Each week will have the same structure. An outline of the programme is shown below. Morning sessions will start at 9.00am and end at 12.30pm for lunch. Afternoon sessions will start at 1.30pm and end at 5.30pm. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Academy welcome Business Group sessions Negotiation Group mentor modelling with mentors Sessions presentations and customer to mentors development (2) Work on business plans Work on presentations Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch Lunch Business Pitch Work on Pitching for Final modelling training presentations investment presentations and customer with mentors and networking development (1) Fellow masterclass and networking For each cohort, the Academy is seeking mentors to deliver expert guidance and support to LIF fellows in developing their business plan, over two half-day sessions and one full-day session, as follows: Welcome and initial pitches from fellows (Monday am) Group sessions and individual work on business plans (Wednesday am and pm) Group sessions and individual work on final pitches (Friday am) Judging final pitches (Friday pm) Further information about each of these sessions is provided below. 2.3 Welcome and initial pitches from fellows This session will take place on Monday morning (9.30am-12.30pm). After a brief welcome from Academy staff, including an introduction to the programme, the participants will give an initial presentation of their business ideas to the three mentors and to each other. The session will allow mentors to get to know the cohort of fellows. Mentors will also be encouraged to have lunch with the fellows following the session ( pm). 2.4 Group sessions and individual work on business plans This session will take place throughout Wednesday (9.30am-4.00pm). Building on their business model training on Tuesday, fellows will work on developing their business plan with guidance from the mentors. This full-day session will start with group Q&A sessions, each chaired by a different mentor, allowing 4

fellows to refine their business plan. Fellows will then have time to work individually on their business plan with the mentors available to answer questions and provide constructive criticism and advice as necessary, through in-depth individual discussions. Mentors will also be encouraged to attend the entrepreneurship Masterclass (4.00pm-5.00pm) and networking drinks reception (5.00pm-18.30pm) that follow. 2.5 Group sessions and individual work on final pitches This session will take place on Friday morning (9.30am-1.30pm, including lunch). In this penultimate session, fellows will work on developing their final pitch with guidance from the mentors. This half-day session will start with group Q&A sessions, each chaired by a different mentor, allowing fellows to refine their final presentation/pitch. Fellows will then have time to work individually on their business plan with the mentors available to answer questions and provide constructive criticism and advice as necessary. 2.6 Judging final pitches This session will take place on Friday afternoon (1.30pm-5.00pm). Fellows will pitch their revised business plans to a panel of mentors, as well as other invited guests. The mentors will have a key role in judging the final presentations and selecting the best pitch. Mentors will also be encouraged to attend the networking drinks reception that follows (5.00pm-7.00pm). 2.7 Rate of reimbursement For each cohort, it is a requirement that each mentor will be present for all of these sessions, in order to support the fellows throughout the week (approximately 17 hours contact time in total). For each week/cohort, The Academy will pay mentors 1,700 plus VAT. If in exceptional circumstances a mentor has to miss a session, or part of a session, during the week they will be paid pro rata at a rate of 100 (plus VAT) per hour. 3 Profile of the mentors The mentors will have: Expertise in all stages of small business development and business planning; Direct experience of starting up or developing new businesses, ideally in the technology sector; A track record of successfully supporting (through mentorship, coaching or other activities) start-up companies and SMEs; Excellent communication skills including active listening and personal presentation skills; The ability to work with entrepreneurs from different country contexts and cultures; Excellent relationship building and networking skills. 5
