Bakerview Road, Bellingham HULA CLASSES Beginning Keiki 6-13 years old 10 am - 12 pm $135 Beginning Women 14 years & older 11 am - 1:30 pm $165 Returning Student (attended previous adult hula workshop) $140 Instruction in basic olelo Hawai i (Hawaiian language) Basic hula steps with hand gestures Understand the history of the mele (mo olelo) Instruction on proper hula attire Voice instruction for oli and chanting Keiki class will learn traditional Hula Kahiko and modern Hula Auana. Adult women will learn two hula mele. A hula folder will be provided at first class. All students should dress appropriately for instruction. Purple Hula Pa u or skirt will be discussed at first class. Please wear black t- shirt. All hair pulled back into a neat bun with flowers. No jewelry allowed to be worn in class, with the exception of wedding rings/bands. Instructor: Kumu Hula Manuiki Lono, Halau Hula O Lono The halau is under the direction of Aunty Manu, who was born in Koloa, Kaua i of pure Hawaiian ancestry, and raised on Hawaiian traditions and customs. At the age of 9 years old, she received a certificate of hula from Aunty Ruby Ahakuelo. During her intermediate and high school years, she danced with Uncle Joseph Kahaulelio. Aunty was a Kodak Hula Dancer for 5 years and has recorded an album titled Halona. She later became a Hau oli Dancer with Aunty Vicki II Rodrigues and Aunty Pauline Kekahuna and was part of that halau when they went on to be the first ever winners of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival! Aunty Manu has taught hula all of her adult life as well as organize festivals in Hawai i and in the Pacific Northwest, particularly the annual Aloha O Na Kupuna Hawaiian Music & Dance Festival and Live Aloha Festival in Seattle. As Kumu Hula of Halau O Lono she conducts keiki and women s classes, teaching chanting, oli, ukulele, singing and olelo. 3 NORTHWEST HAWAI I OHANA (NWHO) SCHOLARSHIP Purpose: Event: To award a cultural scholarship to NWHO members to support events and programs representing the cultural diversity of the people of Hawaii. Northwest Hawai i Ohana Beginner Hula and Ukulele Sixweek classes from October 7, 2012 through November 18, Award: To sponsor two applicants one Adult and one Keiki (child) to attend Northwest Hawai i Ohana Beginner Hula and Ukulele Classes from October 7 to November 18, Eligibility: Top priority will be given to a NWHO member or the dependent of a NWHO member. Application Process: A completed application form must be accompanied by: Applicant s personal statement telling about his/her reason for applying for the scholarship and why he/she should receive the financial assistance; Applicant s explanation of how the event/activity will benefit him/her, the club, and the community; Applicant s explanation of how the event/activity represents the cultural diversity of the people of Hawaii; Copy of the registration form for the event/activity and any supporting documentation; The deadline for the applications is September 30, 2012 or a postmarked date of September 30, Mail to: Submit application along with all supporting documents to: Scholarship Committee Northwest Hawaii Ohana th Street Bellingham, WA 98225
