Fellowship Program Prospectus
About Pollinate Energy Pollinate Energy is a United Nations award winning organisation, founded in 2012 by 6 young Australians. The mission of the organisation is focussed on the 65 million Indians who live in grinding poverty in the heart of India s biggest cities. Most are struggling to meet their basic daily household needs, and have limited or no access to electricity, safe drinking water or clean cooking facilities. Pollinate Energy brings life-changing products to people who need them most from solar powered lights to improved cook stoves to water filters. For India s poor, we are the missing link in the chain, allowing them to access, understand, and afford household products that make daily life better and safer. We do all this whilst creating jobs for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the skills and tools to generate a sustainable income to support their local communities. Bangalore Pollinator Amreen explaining the benefits of a solar light Bangalore Pollinator Manjunath demonstrating a water filter 2
Our Impact (last updated August 2017) Pollinate Energy works in 5 locations Supports over 45 Pollinators to run their own business Work in 900 slum communities 7 million kgs of CO2 emissions saved 3
The Fellowship Program At Pollinate Energy, we are committed to supporting the next generation of social entrepreneurs and future leaders. Over the last 5 years, we have welcomed over 350 students & professionals from around the world, and over 150 students from across India, to participate in our Student or Professionals Fellowship Programs. During this innovative program, participants undertake a range of structured learning modules while simultaneously working on strategic Pollinate Energy projects in India. The Fellowship builds the participants knowledge, skills and experience through exposure to a dynamic and successful social enterprise. The participants also provide much needed personnel power to support Pollinate Energy s incountry operations. Importantly, the Fellowship assists universities to achieve their objective in creating graduates with a social conscious and global perspective. For corporate partners, the Fellowship serves as a fantastic recruitment and reward tool for committed employees, and offers an exciting and versatile opportunity for employees to gain personal and professional skills in an intensive setting. 4
My experience on the Pollinate Professionals Fellowship was amazing. The egalitarian, start up culture and willingness of Pollinate to embrace new ideas meant that I really had an opportunity to contribute and use my skills. Working in the communities has also made me completely reassess everything I take for granted in my life and reaffirmed my commitment to creating social impact in whatever way I can. Jessie-Grace Stephenson, Lawyer, Gilbert & Tobin The Pollinate Energy Fellowship is a must do for anyone even remotely curious about changing the world for the better. I learnt more about India, poverty, social business and myself during the 2 week program than I have in the last 2 years! Holly Hyder, Masters of Energy Studies, Melbourne University Key outcomes for Fellows All Fellows will leave the program with a thorough understanding of the entrepreneurial approach, appreciation for involving the end user in design and change, and with tools to help them to better lead and initiate gamechanging ideas upon return to their coursework and professional jobs. Fellows continue to be engaged through our alumni community (now numbering 500 people across 4 continents) and leave a lasting legacy. Their contribution enables Pollinate Energy to continue striving in its mission to bring lifechanging products to people who need them most. 5
Who are suitable for the Fellowship Programs The Fellowship Program was created to give students and professionals from around the world the chance to participate directly in our work, apply their skills to a meaningful project, and learn from our experience as social entrepreneurs. It is tailored to meet the needs of today s student or professional who is seeking to make a difference in their chosen field. Fellows come from diverse academic backgrounds from social sciences, business & engineering and the Fellowship encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration to create holistic solutions to Pollinate Energy s challenges. We have two distinct program offerings tailored to Students and Professionals. Students - [+2 years university experience] 40% direct community time with Pollinators to understand what everyday context of the lives of people living in slums and the challenges that they face. 40% project time these are strategic projects that vary depending on operational need, but can include exploring new market opportunities for Pollinate Energy, sourcing and testing new products, developing new sales tools and marketing collateral, and collecting and analysing data to improve Pollinate Energy s ability to serve city slums. 20% professional and personal development sessions, to teach them about social entrepreneurship, technology and international development, and understand their strengths, motivations and the opportunities awaiting them in a social business/social sector career Professionals - [minimum 12 months professional work experience, or post-graduate students] 50% team problem solving, taking a pressing issue for Pollinate Energy and self-dividing as a group to develop, test, and implement new ideas. The approach for Professionals is a rapid prototype approach, allowing them to come up with ideas and test quickly in the field for results in a two-week period. 30% field time, to observe the operations of the business and understand the practicalities of a real-world distribution solution. This informs professionals on how to pitch their solutions to the team problem and also allows them critical time in the community understanding the conditions of the families we serve. 20% professional and personal development, including tailored sessions with the program leaders and Pollinate Energy leadership team and panel sessions with experts from the social enterprise sector. 6
The Fellowship Fee/Fundraising Target The program fee is outlined below. Fellows have the option to undertake fundraising activities to pay for the Fellowship fee. While they are welcome to self-fund fundraising within their community is an important part of the learning process for Fellows, as social enterprises including Pollinate Energy rely on a short-term business model that requires start-up funding. Pollinate Energy has partnerships with Universities under the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants initiative, and has ongoing relationships with several corporate partners that fund their employee s to attend a fellowship including Accenture, Worley Parsons, Aecom, and Arup. Fellowship Fee / Fundraising Target Professional Fellowship AUD 3,800 Student Fellowship AUD 2,800 Program fee includions: Pre-program training and onboarding support Program management in country Accommodation 2 meals per day Travel to and from airport Land transportation during the Fellowship Post-program engagement and connection with alumni Excluded: Flights Visa Travel insurance Private vehicles (if needed) 7
Benefits to University Partners Pollinate Energy partners with a number of universities who promote the Fellowship to their students, as the opportunity supports universities to develop their desired graduate attributes. Specifically, the experience allows students to: Puts theory into practice, fostering critical and independent thinking and building strong communication skills in a cross-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment Provides immersion in one of the world s great cultures and most dynamic economies, building a deep understanding of cross-cultural issues, economic and social development and establishing practical hands-on experience in an international context Provides unique insights into social impact and entrepreneurship, fostering graduates that are responsible global citizens with an authentic understanding of sustainability, equity and social inclusion in a developing world context Beyond this, university partners benefit from: Increased branding from working with an award-winning and successful social enterprise Promotion of fellowship opportunities to prospective students Profiling of Fellows and Alumni in university promotional materials What do Fellows achieve on the ground The nature of the Fellowship is to encourage innovation in a team environment. Each program seeks to solve one or more key business challenges faced by Pollinate Energy. Because of this, each program will differ slightly, and the contributions of over 350 people are hard to summarise, but here are some of the highlights: February 2013 Student Fellows trained our first five Pollinators and designed our payment plan structure. They discovered our collateral - by withholding the warranty card and solar light from a customer during the payment period, the customer still had access to light, but was motivated to pay off the product within the designated period. April 2014 Professional Fellows designed, undertook and compiled our first major independent impact assessment July 2015 Student Fellows conducted major data review and implemented our Salesforce application, training 15 Pollinators in this new technology, which resulted with a decrease in default rate over 3 months from 28% to <2%. 8
December 2015 Student Fellows tested and commenced roll-out of two new products water filters and improved cookstoves. February 2016 Student Fellows scouted Mumbai and Delhi, India's two largest cities, documenting the location of over 800 households, their demographics and needs and analysing this data. As a result of this assessment, we made the difficult decision to rule out Mumbai and Delhi as potential markets, as the research indicated that the families living in these slums largely had access to basic necessities and government/ngo support. July 2016 Student Fellows scouted Bhubaneswar and Lucknow, and deemed Lucknow as our next region for expansion. Lucknow is now Pollinate Energy s fourth city. February 2017 Student Fellows & April 2017 Professional Fellows worked on a concurrent project that modelled Pollinate Energy s net emissions, discovering we were net positive by over 2 million kgs! July 2017 Student Fellows finalised the scouting of our 5th city location, Kanpur, and assisted the local team in launching operations Our head office team in Bangalore allocate projects for the program based upon the skills of the people coming, and the strategic objectives that Pollinate Energy needs to achieve. The fellows will follow a similar daily schedule to allow them to work productively on strategic projects in small teams, and get adequate time in the field learning about the challenges of working in the urban slum communities. Time Activity 10am - 11am morning meeting debrief about the events of the previous day goals for the day ahead. 11am - 2pm 2pm - 3pm 3pm - 8pm 8pm 9pm Project work in teams to be undertaken in office. On some days if required th may include trips to communities to oversee the Pollinators implementing testing of new market initiatives, however predominantly community visits occur in the afternoons when people in the communities are more available. Lunch Time in communities with Pollinators. Interactions will occur with either exist community member customers or potential customers. Dinner provided at Pollinate Energy Headquarters 9pm - Bed Free time Note: Days off: Friday evening, Saturday 9
The Pollinate Energy fellowship gave me first-hand experience in how a successful social enterprise operates. Unlike other volunteering opportunities, the research and data we collected directly impacted the future decisions of the company, which is a rare feeling as a student. I would recommend this fellowship to any student that is interested in how their various skills can be harnessed into a career that does social good. Beatrix Neville, Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science, Monash University Program Intake Times We have 6 set program intake times per year, and have the capacity to run several programs per intake. We also work with university partners to create tailored programs for cohorts of students outside of these programs. For example, we ran a tailored two week program for a group of Presidio MBA students in January To do this, we require guaranteed participation of a minimum of 10 students (up to 12). Month Schedule January/February April May June/July September October November/December Student Fellowship weeks Professional Fellowship - 2 weeks Professional Fellowship - 2 weeks Student Fellowship weeks Professional Fellowship - 2 weeks Professional Fellowship - 2 weeks Student Fellowship weeks 10
