1 S T E U B E N C O U N T Y 4 - H Clover Connection Special points of interest: Fair Books Mini 4-H Volunteers Needed Spark Clubs Local Scholarships Trophy Sponsors Needed Animal ID Volume 26, Issue 4 April 2016 Must-do s, Have-to s, and Choose-to s I recently read an article from Forbes online that referred to the top 25 income producing jobs requiring a master s degree. It was no surprise that most of the careers were in the engineering field. In fact, nearly all of them were in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Our industrious world is always looking for growth and expansion, and those who value STEM ideals are much needed. I think 4-H is making some headway as we have integrated Lego Robotics, maker workshops, updated our trip offerings, and kept things like the 4-H Electric project and 4-H Aerospace project around. However, I can t compromise the fact that non-stem folks are much needed too! I love knowing that some of our young people will be the next pork producers, grain farmers, nurses, florists, repair shop owners, and more! Our fast paced world of must-do s and have-to s sometimes gets the best of us. Our world needs some small town entrepreneurs, too, who have choose-to attitudes. There have been a lot of must-do s and have-to s in 4-H lately, but I hope you ll learn to appreciate the choose-to s along the way as well! The choose-to s are what really define you and make you unique. Choose to be great, and do what you love! Any of these IDs that are missing, incomplete or incorrect will result in state fair ineligibility. Premise ID s are Important All Indiana premises associated with the purchase, sale and/or exhibition of cattle, swine, sheep, goats and farmed cervids must be registered by state law. Registration allows BOAH to be more effective tracing animal movements in a major animal health emergency investigation. Registering your premise is free & takes only about 5 minutes. Visit and click on Premises Registration. A premise identification number (also known as a premid ) will be issued within 3 to 5 business days after the online form is submitted. If registering by mail with a paper form, allow 10 business days for a premid to be issued. If you simply need to verify your premises identification number, contact BOAH at: or animalhealth@boah.in.gov. Be sure to note the name and premises physical address listed on the registration. Be sure to allow enough time to receive your premises number before your 4-H Animal ID is due! Proper Care of Animals Some 4-H ers already have their steers, horses, dogs, cats, hens, etc. that they plan to exhibit at the county fair this summer, but many others will soon be acquiring their lambs, hogs, goats, pullets, etc. Proper animal care is a must for 4-H ers as some people in the community feel we set the example, and so they should because historically we have done a super job at it! Do yourself and your animals a favor by providing exemplary care for your critters! Maintain fresh, clean water to drink. Furnish the proper daily feed for healthy and consistent growth. If your animals need medication, be careful to administer any injections, and do so in the appropriate location for the given animal. Healthy animals lead to happy animals. As silly as it may sound, your dog will likely obey better, your calf will likely lead better, and your hens will likely lay more eggs. Upcoming Open Shows Check out these open shows aren t too terribly far away to practice your grooming and showmanship skills: Elkhart County Beef Club s Northern Classic Preview Show April 17 4th Annual Allen County Dairy Beef Open Show June 11

11 VOLUME 26, ISSUE 4 Page 11 Why do we do poster exhibits for some projects? 4-H posters are designed to teach other s something, not JUST to complete the project. Keep these things in mind as you begin working on your poster projects: Primary Purposes: To encourage you to explore information and learn something new, to convey a message to others, to convince someone to try something, and to meet a project requirement Secondary Purposes: To display something you ve learned through 4-H, to express your thoughts, and perhaps to fulfill other learning experiences such as a school assignment or science fair Really good posters typically have a background that is visually appealing to all ages, a creative title (some projects have required titles...check the Fair Book!), a well-planned layout, good use of color combinations and space. Foam Core Poster Boards and Covers For Sale! The Extension Office is offering foam core poster boards (22 x28...just the right size for 4-H projects) AND clear plastic covers (also 22 x28 ) for sale. The clear plastic covers are designed like an envelope where you simply slip your foam core poster inside and seal it with its own self-adhesive strip. Poster Boards $2.50 Clear Plastic Covers $1.00 Salon Print Plastic Covers $ H Cake Decorating Workshop Kay Kunce, Steuben County 4-H Cake Decorating Superintendent, will host a workshop for all cake decorators on April 11th at 6 pm in the Extension Kitchen (located across the hall from the Extension Office). Please join her to learn some tips and tricks for submitting really great cake forms at the county fair. Kay typically provides the icing, so please come check it out even if you don t have the proper tools yet! You can still add the project through May 15th, so feel free to show up even if you aren t a member of the Cake Decorating project! What do I do with these papers? Perhaps you are new or nearly new and wondering what exactly you re supposed to do with these things we call record sheets, books, or manuals. Reference the electronic Fair Book ( found online at: extension.purdue.edu/steuben) to verify how many activities need to be completed in the manuals for each project. Once the activities or record sheets are complete, you may turn them in at the Extension Office. Most youth will wait to submit them until the last week of June, but if you are concerned about misplacing them between now and then, we can hold on to those completed manuals and record sheets for you. All materials are due on/before June 30, 2016! ATV = All-Terrain Vehicle 4-H Members who are enrolled in the 4-H ATV project are invited to attend the FREE safety inspections held at Hayden Honda. Discounted items such as helmets, oil, etc. will be available for purchase, so take your wish list! Safety inspections are required, so if you can t make it to either of the FREE days listed below, please call Hayden Honda to arrange a time for the $5 inspection. FREE Safety Inspections Days: April 22, 3-7:30 pm April 23, 9 am-2:30 pm Indiana 4-H Mission: The Indiana 4-H Youth Development mission is to provide real-life educational opportunities that develop young people who positively impact their community and world.
