5 Project Background & Overview Problem: Inequities/gaps for certain populations STEM industry talent demand Solution: Community outreach and collaboration Quality programming: STEM literacy, confidence and competence FIRST is committed to bringing its programs to students who would benefit most and is providing funds to communities to address inequities in STEM. 5

6 Diversity Outreach Populations Populations Underrepresented Underserved Definitions Racial/ethnic populations historically less represented in STEM fields, include: Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (Committee on STEM Education, 2013) Populations traditionally lacking access to specific fields of STEM: girls and young women, economically disadvantaged students, first generation in college, vulnerable youth including those with disabilities, disconnected youth, and those living in rural or urban areas, LGBTQ+ (Committee on STEM Education, 2013 and others) 6

12 Notification of Intent to Apply NOI Process NOIs must be submitted using Submittable the portal FIRST is using to streamline the online application process. The Submittable form for the NOI can be found HERE. NOIs are due by 11:59 pm EST on November 22 nd and no late NOIs will be accepted. FIRST will review NOIs and send invitations by by December 18 th to selected communities to proceed with full proposal submission. 12

14 Funding & Eligibility Funding Period: July 2018 to June 30, 2019 Amount: $5,000 to $50,000 with an average award of $25,000 Usage: Grants may cover costs of meeting the needs of students participating in the proposed activities including Tools, materials, robot kits, registration fees, coach/mentor stipends, travel, food, etc. required to run FIRST teams Activities and costs associated with starting and running teams: Other expenses essential to removing barriers for underrepresented and underserved populations Other personnel budget line items are discouraged Non-allowable activities and expenditures No matching or in-kind contributions are required, but both sustainability and intent to leverage this award are important. 14

15 Funding & Eligibility, continued Eligibility Anchor entity/organization: W-9 and with a Federal Tax ID (501c3 status with the IRS not required) Individuals may not apply. FIRST headquarters staff, field staff and partners (including Regional Directors, FIRST Affiliate and Operational Partners, VISTA members and Senior Mentors) may not apply directly but can build coalitions that submit collaborative proposals. This applies to FIRST Teams, Coaches and Mentors also. Coalitions prioritized and defined as groups of two or more entities in shared action. A non-first entity is required to serve as the anchor entity/organization. For example, a coalition could consist of a local nonprofit, a school district and a local or regional FIRST organization. 15

16 Activities & Reporting Activities Starting, running FIRST teams Include activities that: Foster community outreach to increase STEM diversity, Enhance inclusion within FIRST team environments, Remove barriers to participation for targeted underrepresented and underserved populations Expose populations to new experiences and FIRST events FIRST seeks innovation in approach to community outreach, collaboration, program participant engagement and support. Reporting: regular grantee conference calls/visits, interim and final reports on progress and the use of funds using template provided, record of receipts maintained; surveys and interviews and demographic data will also be required. 16

17 Selection Criteria & Submission Selection Criteria Alignment with goals of increasing diversity in access to FIRST Programs and improving inclusive practices on teams Demographics of students served and support on FIRST teams Coalition-building focused on meeting clearly explained community needs, and collaboration with local FIRST leadership Strength and execution track record of the applying entity and its coalition in serving underrepresented and underserved students Value of the proposed activities relative to the grant amount Intent to leverage the initial grant to offer future programs Submission notifications to proceed with full proposal submission by December 18 th ; proposals due January 30,
