The Children s Defense Fund Freedom School is a six weeks summer program that supports children in high quality reading and enrichment activities. 4 Proposal Description* Describe your proposal in enough detail for someone to understand who has never heard of your organization or project. Include the who, what, where, when, and why of the project. The CDF Freedom School (FS) is a six weeks program providing summer reading and culture enrichment through a research based Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) that supports children and families around high quality academics. FS program sites: Will serve disadvantaged youths in the Stop Six Community PK 5th grade. Instructions delivered by college interns from their community at an intern-to-child classroom ratio of 1:10; Interns are trained 2 weeks; Children read high quality, culturally relevant books and engage in reading, writing, language acquisition, and discussions appropriate to grade level; Provide two nutritious meals and a healthy snack each day; Children receive a free book each week; Pre and post reading evaluation are given to determine gains in student s reading; and Parents are engaged as volunteers and participate in weekly workshops; FS daily schedule: 7:30 Breakfast 8:30 Rally; prepare for day 9:00 11:45 IRC 11:45 12:00 drop everything and read 12:00 12:30 Lunch 1:00 3:00 Activities; field trips, community service, games and athletics 3:10 5:00 Parent Workshop (Thursdays) Freedom School is free of charge to all participants. 5 Evaluation* Describe your strategy for tracking the outcomes of this grant. Be specific about the desired outcomes you anticipate seeing. Using the Basic Reading Inventory diagnostic tool, CDF hires an independent evaluator to conduct a pretest during the first week of the program to determine students reading level. During the last week of the program the evaluator conducts a post-test to determine any gains in reading grade levels over the duration of the program. The evaluator also conducts a pre and post climate survey to estimate the impact of the program on non-cognitive skills such as, attitudes toward school and education, positive ethnic identity, and social problem solving skills. The results are provided directly to CDF who provides a final report to each participating site. The report in its entirety is provided to funders. The cost associated with testing is included in the cost paid to CDF by sponsors. ABCLC has in the past shown an average of up to a grade and half increase in reading levels of participants and expects to show on average at least a 12 month increase in reading levels.
