1 Creative Work Systems ANNUAL REPORT FY 17
2 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Onward, Upward and Outward Creative Work Systems has been growing at an unprecedented rate. Building on the momentum of decades of dedication to participants in central and southern Maine, Creative Work Systems focused its 50th year on growing community services, diversifying, and expanding our programs. To accommodate participants in our rapidly expanding programs, Creative Work Systems acquired a 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, fully accessible space for the new home of our Cumberland Community Services (CCS). Formerly Portland Community Services and York Community Services, CCS moved into this open-concept building that has been renovated to meet the specific priorities and needs of our participants. It was a great opportunity to renew our commitment to community services as well as to enhance and expand programming. The new building also offers a place to stretch out both inside and out with an outdoor green space and easy access to many community venues. Creative Work Systems also acquired a new administrative location in Fiscal Year During our search for enhanced day program space, we found an ideal location for our administrative offices: an historic brick building on Speirs Street in Westbrook. This bright, spacious and inviting building offers a wonderful training area as well as various meeting rooms for both formal and casual team gatherings. The new location is situated beside a bike path along the Presumpscot River, within walking distance of banks, restaurants, coffee shops, and the post office; all of which serve to promote a positive work-life balance. And it is only three miles from our former location! Fiscal Year 2017 has proven to be one of great progress and change. Let us not take for granted the foundational 50 years of dedicated service that have brought us here as we continue to expand and improve, with our mission always at the forefront. To another 50 years! Heidi
3 HIGHLIGHTS Our Numbers Are Up! Case Management expanded the number of participants it serves by 38%. The Independent Living program increased in size by 23%, and Community Services grew 6%. Cumberland Community Services Portland Community Services and York Community Services combined to become Cumberland Community Services, now based on Broadway in South Portland. Direct Support Wages In June 2017, participants and staff converged on the Statehouse in Augusta for a rally to support Bill LD-967, calling for an increase in Direct Support wages. In the past decade, reimbursement rates through MaineCare have dwindled, leading to an industry-wide staffing crisis. Our organization was extremely well represented at the capital with staff, families, advocates and participants all calling for a Fair Wage for Important Work! Our Thanks In March of 2017, Brenda Smith retired from the Creative Work Systems Board of Directors. From her first job at Lund Road to her tenure on the board, Brenda will always be a member of the CWS family. We extend a warm appreciation to Brenda for her years of dedicated service. Cultivation Works Farm The Grand Opening of the Cultivation Works Farm on North Street in Saco marked a new chapter. With a new greenhouse, retail space, and a fresh breath of life from its new director, the program quickly became a hub in the Saco community for promoting local, sustainable farming.
