1 CITY MANAGER REPORT FOR CITY COMMISSION MEETING APRIL 24, Summer Reading Program 2017 Teen Video Challenge Deven Otero, age 17, has been involved in Bruton Memorial Library teen programs for over two years. Most recently, Deven entered the 2017 Teen Video Challenge that John Russell, Youth Services Librarian, promoted at the Library about making a video to promote the Statewide Summer Reading Program. The concept and execution of this video was done completely by Deven, with John providing equipment and technical guidance. Deven used Library materials in the video the theme for the summer is Build a Better World. Deven s video won and will become the official Summer Reading Club video for the all the libraries in the State of Florida this year! 2. NCBA/NCSA Spring Training The National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) and National Club Softball Association (NCSA) were in Plant City organizing spring training for college level baseball and softball teams over five weeks. From March 4 through April 1, 70 teams from 19 states including Colorado and Wyoming, east to the Midwest and along the East Coast have spent a week in Plant City honing their skills for the upcoming spring college baseball and softball seasons. According to the NCBA/NCSA websites, The Spring Training Tournament is designed to help collegiate club baseball and softball teams prepare for the upcoming season through practices, games and team-building functions. The tournament creates the perfect environment to create a training schedule that is conducive to each team's needs. This is the 12 th season that the NCBA/NCSA held their event in Plant City, using five large baseball fields and two softball fields scheduled for a total of over 504 hours. Recreation Assistant Program Manager Tim Hanlon worked with both the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and the NCBA/NCSA to coordinate the scheduling logistics of their event.

4 Plant City Police Department Inter-Office Memorandum Chief Ed Duncan Date: April 19, 2017 To: Mike Herr City Manager From: Ed Duncan Chief of Police Re: Law Enforcement Accreditation Message: On February 22, 2017, the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation reaccredited the Plant City Police Department after an extensive on-site inspection and a comprehensive file review. The police department was required to demonstrate compliance with 218 accreditation standards, ranging from evidence storage to enforcement operations. Additionally, randomly selected personnel were interviewed to evaluate job knowledge and policy awareness. At the conclusion of the on-site visit, the assessment team leader described the inspection and evaluation as flawless and praised the staff for their professionalism. As part of the reaccreditation process, a formal presentation was provided to a panel of Commissioners highlighting the operational and administrative functions of the police department. During this presentation, I was required to provide a description of the department and the community we serve. The presentation was extremely interactive with each evaluator asking questions regarding the operational capabilities of the agency. At the conclusion of the presentation, the Plant City Police Department was awarded its fourth accreditation certificate. The Police Department was originally accredited in 2005 and the commitment to professional law enforcement service continues today. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Captain Stwan, Sergeant Polk, Master Patrol Officer Pawlowski and Officer Dunnam, the department s 2017 reaccreditation process was extremely successful and demonstrated the exemplary work ethic of the entire Plant City Police Department s workforce.
