4 PROGRAM DETAILS What is ActivateYYC? ActivateYYC is a new, one-time program that will provide 150 microgrants $750 to groups and businesses to experiment with local projects and events that motivate Calgarians to Walk, Play & Be Neighbourly. These activities are meant to be quick, fun and low-cost ideas that aim to make a small part of the City more lively and enjoyable.

10 Who Can Apply? These projects and events are meant to be led by residents for residents! Applications are only accepted from organizations and businesses for insurance and reimbursement purposes. Individuals with a great ActivateYYC idea must find a group to partner with. PROGRAM DETAILS

11 Why Do I Need A Partner Organization? Partner organizations are needed so that we know you will have proper insurance in case something goes wrong during your project/event. We don t want you to be held liable! Once we know there is proper insurance, we can send the reimbursement cheque to your partner organizations, who can then pay you back accordingly. 14 How Many Applications Can I Submit? If you have a bunch of ActivateYYC projects and events in mind that is great! However, please submit only your top ideas as we want to distribute grants all over the City! PROGRAM DETAILS

15 How Will My Submission Be Judged? There are 3 important elements you should consider when planning your project or event: 1) Novelty The more unique your idea, the better chance you have of being selected! 2) Replicability This simply means could other groups try and do your project or event idea somewhere else in the City if they heard of your success? 3) Overall impact The more partners, volunteers, and participants involved in your activity, the better! 16 PROJECT/EVENT REQUIREMENTS 1) You are partnered with an organization who has special event insurance 2) Your project/event is new to your group 3) Your project/event will occur within the September 2017 to March 2019 time-frame. FEBRUARY 5th, 2018 DEADLINE! 4) This is a reimbursement grant, so you will need to provide the upfront costs 5) Application includes a detailed budget 6) Show us you have thought your idea through

Artists, musicians, guest speakers, facilitators, etc. Volunteer time cannot be claimed Example EXPENSES Project: Paint the Pavement to be located in near the local elementary school. This is a 2 day project in collaboration with the community association and the local BRZ. 18 What Can t the Microgrant be Used For? Grant money cannot be used for the purchase of assets over $500. Ex. Laptops, cameras, lawn mowers, etc. PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

27 How Can I Find Partners And Sponsors? Study the purpose of your project or event, and look at what is already going on in your local community. STEP 2 Find your partners! Try to target your approach to look for groups that share the same passion and values as you do! Find the people who would directly benefit from your project/ event. Try to get in contact with groups that have already implemented similar programs to what you are envisioning. Just Ask! SELL YOUR IDEA! HELPFUL TIPS & TOOLS

37 LEARNINGS FROM ROUND 1? Ask about permits! There are times when you may think you need a permit for your project, but you may actually not. Contact 311 to see what you will actually need. Once you know what permits you need, apply for them as soon as possible it can often take much longer than you think to get them, so give yourself lots of time. What other things do you need to keep in mind as you prepare for your project? Think about the effort required and what season you re planning your project in.
