1 ANNUAL REPORT September December 2017 LAUNCHPAD FOR SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS
2 Remembering Shri P.N.Devarajan Vision An equitable world through social entrepreneurship. Genesis There is nobody in this world who can fill the void created by our dearest founder Shri. P.N. Devarajan. A humble, compassionate and inspiring person, a strong believer of equality and equity, it was indeed a good fortune for all of us at CSIM to be mentored by him. Network is Networth was the mantra he lived by and he also ardently taught all of us to follow the same. Mission To be a learning hub for social change agents and enable them to ideate and implement their social change ideas / enterprises. values Social Consciousness Empathy Excellence Continuous Learning CSIM is a pioneer in offering social entrepreneurship training programs in India that ensures, and enhances the quality of delivery in social change agents. CSIM pursues this mission by offering a wide range of training programs that advocates the principles and practices of social entrepreneurship. Established in 1999, as a project of Manava Seva Dharma Samvardhani Trust, it has contributed in the areas of training, research, capacity building, and social audit for development organisations as well as corporate houses all over India. Over the years, CSIM has emerged as the leading institution, especially in the field of Social Entrepreneurship and Social Audit. Started in 2001 in Chennai, CSIM has now branches in Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, and Hosangabad. He would constantly tell us that Social Entrepreneurship is an inner call to manage the gap between the have and the have-nots. He regarded social entrepreneurs as next to God for the selfless work done by them. Hence, CSIM is all about facilitating and celebrating social entrepreneurship and helping social change agents evolve innovative and inspiring change ideas. It s really hard to accept sudden death like his, and we will never get accustomed to it. Certainly, the precious memories of PND will remain in our hearts. We promise to continue with our mission of creating an ecosystem for social entrepreneurship the way PND envisioned. Objectives To orient socially conscious individuals to the opportunities and needs in the social sector through customized training programs on social entrepreneurship. To demonstrate the potential of social entrepreneurship amongst the NGO fraternity to address organizational and resource challenges. Generate awareness on budding social entrepreneurs through publications and public events. Facilitate transparency and professionalism amongst social enterprises through Social Accounting and Audit. Your memory is our keepsake from which we will never part, God may have you in his keeping, but we still have you in our heart. 2 - Latha Suresh 3

The third batch was launched on 16 th August 2017 and 33 students have enrolled for this course. Programmes at a glance 1. Post Graduate Diploma in Social Initiative and Management (PGDSIM) The 16 th batch of the one-year PGDSIM programme was launched on 16 th June, Prospective Social Entrepreneurs enrolled for the course. The Chief Guest for the inaugural event was Mrs. Rajashree Natarajan, COO of Cognizant Foundation. PGDSIM is a good combination of rigorous theory with fieldwork practice. It includes dynamic workshops and skill development programmes on issues related to the development sector. Prospective Social Entrepreneurs (PSE) present their project proposal to a panel of experts who critically assesses and guide the implementation process. As part of the orientation programme, PSE s are oriented on the course content, taken on field visits to various social enterprises and NGOs, and attend guest lectures delivered by practitioners. They also attend workshops on Group Dynamics and Street Theatre which enables them to function as an effective group during the course period. Six core subjects and two optional subjects are handled during each semester. Both theoretical inputs and practical insights to all these subjects are provided by well-trained faculty who are academicians, social entrepreneurs, and subject experts. The classes for these optional subjects are held on Tuesdays for five weeks, while the rest of the days are dedicated for the core subjects. Contact classes are conducted on two days a week and concurrent field work is assigned on other days. At the end of the course, each student is assigned to an NGO for one-month to serve as an intern and understand its day-today functioning. Until now, 16 batches have been completed and in total 330 PSEs have received their diplomas. 71 of them have launched NGOs and 40 NGO heads and 66 NGO staff have been oriented on social entrepreneurship. The PGDSIM of CSIM offered to our students of BA Sociology facilitates career opportunities in the development sector. Nearly 45% of our students belonging to the batch are ready to take up job opportunities. While our students are oriented on theoretical knowledge through academic curriculum design, CSIM enriches them with life skills and experiential learning. We thank our administrators and CSIM for their untiring effort in making our younger generation understand the social issues and influence them to contribute for the development of our society. Dr. MALARVIZHI.R, Professor, Queen Mary s College Being students of Sociology, this one year course conducted by CSIM is very much useful for us. 6 5. Social Connect Communicate for Change As a part of the Social Connect Programe, our final year students had a chance to actively engage in social activities through CSIM. Our students took active part in this programme and got a chance to know about social entrepreneurship. They enjoyed the field visit and internship which was part of this programme and few of them stated : We look for more programs like this as they help us to get in touch with the societal issues on ground. I feel that Social Connect Programme is one of the best initiatives of our College, which has sensitized our students to the current needs of the society. Prof. G.Jeevitha, SSS Jain College We are happy to convey the experience gained by our students through this programme. CSIM s guidance and support throughout the programme has been amazing. Our students had an opportunity to get exposed to rural areas for the first time and many have developed interest to do their field study here. Prof. V Bhanu, Head, Department of Sociology, SKPC Our visit to Kunjeri Palayam,Sendrayan Palayam and Sindrayan Palayam, located near Pondicherry, was very interesting. CSIM staff were supportive and helped us to engage in the project diligently. It was indeed a great experience to interact with the villagers as part of the PRA exercise. We now have a clear idea about the rural sector and it has been an enriching journey to discover the lives of the rural people.
