1 Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium Annual Report 2013 Mission Statement: "To develop and support the GIS professional in Minnesota for the benefit of our state and its citizens." The Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium is a forum for communicating information to, and improving cooperation among, those interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information Systems (LIS) in the State of Minnesota. Members include GIS users in local, state, federal and tribal government agencies; business and industry; educational institutions and nonprofits. Membership is FREE just by being on our mailing list. The Consortium hosts annual statewide conferences, and establishes committees that deal with specific GIS/LIS-related issues in Minnesota. Opportunities to participate in Consortium activities are available through volunteer work with committees, conferences and workshops. The Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium is an official 501c3 non-profit organization. 1

2 Message from the Board Chair From Adam Snegosky, 2013 Acting Board Chair Did you attend one of the Consortium s Networking Events this past year? Did you hear about it on social media or see it on our updated website? In the past year the Networking Committee has been busy introducing new events such as tailgating at a St. Paul Saints game and visiting the Town Hall Brewery after the Spring Workshops, as well as growing the December Summit Brewery event to over 100 attendees. All of the proceeds from these events go directly to the Consortium s scholarship fund, so I d like to say a special thanks to everyone who helped organize or attended. If you missed last year s events you can take advantage of our increased social media presence to hear about what s coming up in Our Communication & Outreach Committee has been working diligently to increase communication to our members. We currently have over 650 members on LinkedIn, and are approaching 100 followers on both Facebook and Twitter. If you haven t done so already please follow or like the MN GIS/LIS Consortium! If you re not on any of the social media sites yet you can find all of the same information and much more on our updated Website. The Database & Web Committee spent much of the year preparing for the late fall launch of the new and improved MN GIS/LIS Consortium s website. The new site has a more modern look as well as increased functionality. In addition to the items above the Consortium also: Hosted another very successful conference in Rochester which featured more sessions and the debut of the GeoLounge. Partnered with the FOSS4G Conference for our annual Spring Workshops which resulted in a record attendance. Made a commitment to a new scholarship investment strategy to insure that we continue to support students as they prepare to enter the GIS workforce. As a volunteer organization, member participation is vital to the success of the MN GIS/LIS Consortium. Thank you to the current Board of Directors, committee members, workshop instructors, sponsors and all who contributed to the many accomplishments of the past year. I encourage you to continue to get involved by running for the Board or joining a Committee in You will find that working with such a dedicated group of individuals, who are committed to providing the best possible educational and networking opportunities to our membership, is well worth your time and efforts. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact myself or any other Board Member. 2

6 Consortium Highlights 2013 Our new web site launched in late 2013 introducing a whole new look and a variety of new and easier ways for you to stay informed and to be connected and engaged with your MN GIS/LIS Consortium. Networking Events continue to be very popular. The Consortium sponsored three events in 2013; all well attended. Networking events offer our members, sponsors, and guests additional opportunities to share knowledge and experiences in an informal, fun setting. Through sponsorships and donations our networking events also raise money for our scholarship endowment. The MN GIS/LIS Consortium partnered with FOSS4G to sponsor and manage our annual Spring Workshops. This partnership, made possible by the unique opportunity of the FOSS4G North America event coming to Minneapolis, allowed for significant expansion of workshop sessions and attendance. The MN GIS/LIS Consortium offers Event Grants to qualifying GIS/LIS activities. In 2013 we helped sponsor the SE MN GIS User Group s 10 th Anniversary event and a K-12 GIS Educators Workshop at SCSU. Event grants are available annually from the Consortium. Please take advantage of a possible sponsorship when organizing your event. See our web site for additional information and a grant application form. 6
