3 Background Include community situation Include technology situation Include your organization situation Overview What can you do to make the community better What do you have that makes the technology better How will your organization be able to achieve it

4 Read the Grant Proposal carefully Who is the eligible audience? What is the outcome they want to see? Can you meet those two requirements? Learn about the funding agency What is their win ratio? Who is the point of contact? Are there FAQ s they ve already answered? Ask questions Directly to agency contact Check if website has public bulletins

5 Write down the main requirements of the grant Leave space for you to write how you ll address these requirements If there are blanks, look for ways to fill the blanks Example: Need Partnerships across multiple Stakeholders. Answer: Find partners with same goals or who give you something you can t provide

6 Think beyond working alone 100% of $0 is ZERO, so don t be miserly with your imaginary dollars If a partnership increases your chances of winning, then it is always worth it Added bonus is the creation of more jobs for your community

10 America s Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is well on it s way and dolling cash Grants through many agencies including DOE and its many offices (EERE, NETL) How long will it last? Most money must be allocated by 2010, Then in wait and see mode That is why job creation from your idea is important, Federal government want to trace this

14 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) At least 66% of work done by applicant business Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Must partner with research institute Must give at least 30% of funds to institute Purpose U.S. federal agencies with large research and development budgets set aside 2.5% of their funding to be competitively awarded to small businesses. Encouraged to commercialize the technology and also retain the rights to any technology that they develop.

15 Phase I Explores the feasibility of innovative concepts Awards up to $100,000 for about 6-12 months. Phase II Only Phase I award winners may compete for Phase II Awards up to $750,000 over a two-year period. Phase III Non-SBIR capital is used by the small business to pursue commercial applications of the R&D Federal agencies may award non-sbir/sttr-funded, follow-on grants or contracts for products or processes that meet the mission needs of those agencies, or for further R&D.
