2 1. Introduction: Industrial Linkages & Entrepreneurial Development iled Centre has two Sections under its banner: (i) (ii) Industrial Linkages; and Entrepreneurship Development 2. Our Focus: For Industry as a whole: provide best possible and right linkages between staff/students and industry discovering talent frontiers project-industrial linked project For UCTS Graduates: emphasis on high employability e.g.: exposure, on-job training, industrial case studies, site visits, student placements, innovative projects, industrial staff exchange programme and etc. In Technical Field: engage industry players: entities in narrowing the existing barriers between us. Henceforth, all stakeholders can work directly with industry on site and further afield and vice-versa. In Entrepreneurship: open and committed in exploring and seeding entrepreneurial thinking and concept collaborate with the other foundations/agencies in Malaysia or globally. engage an encouraging policy, guideline, incentive to support the growing the ideas and channel the correct impact to the market and society as a whole. 3. Current Perspective: Started with a single step in early 2015 Industry Linkages: Establishment of Solid and Strong Industrial Presence & Active Participation in SCORE & Industry Page 2 of 35

3 Achieved: CTD- 23 companies, UNIAC-24 members, Seminar/talks, recruitment drive, finishing school training, career fair and etc Entrepreneurial Development: Encourage and not restricting entrepreneurship mindset through suitable policy + incentive & Continuous Exposure, Training & Support Achieved: FREE-to-participate Policy, Entrepreneurship month, booths selling, International exposure-auys2016 and etc. 4. What s NEXT: 3 years Planning and 2017 Directions 5. Staff: iled Centre is manned by 1 director (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thomas Moh) and 2 executives which are Mr. Ivan Sia (Industrial Linkages) and Miss Dayang Norsuriani (Entrepreneurial Development). 6. 4 ASEAN University Youth Summit (AUYS) 24 th - 28 th January 2016 at Sumbawa From AUYS 2016, Sumbawa, Indonesia. Sibu - Nine undergraduate students accompanied by two lecturers from University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) took part in the ASEAN University Youth Summit (AUYS) program that lasted for 5 days from 24 th to 28 th January 2016 in Sumbawa, Indonesia. While the primary purpose of the ASEAN University Youth Summit (AUYS) is a meeting program of ASEAN students to exchange ideas and build a common understanding about ASEAN Economic Society (AES), this does not stop the young hot blood students from voicing out their needs and view-points. Cluster of issues debated during the roundtable that were brought on-board during the ASEAN University Youth Summit were: 1) Economic Condition of my hometown (Sibu) - through the eyes of a young person: One of the common problems faced by Sibu is development gap in both infrastructure provision and community s socio-economic attainment, particularly between the core urban areas compared to the outskirt areas of Sibu. 2) The Challenges to be solved in ASEAN Economic Community: Biggest problems in ASEAN countries are poverty and low education attainment. However, special highlight is on young graduates who are educated but unemployed. Besides, the severity of competition between big multi-national industry vs small and medium scale industry, ASEAN developing countries also experienced problems to maximize the benefits of resources from potential tourism assets, poverty among smallholders in the agricultural sector and lack of efficient infrastructural networking. 3) Social Entrepreneurship opportunity to solve economic problem in ASEAN community. The delegates suggestion was to focus on advocacy to increase awareness about the importance of education to the people in rural Sibu. 4) Youth's Roles in advancing Social Entrepreneurship through ASEAN Community. The delegates encouraged and popularize Social Entrepreneurs among youths. At the end of the conference, there have been positive message for future ASEAN. The young generations are bringing one vision and one spirit to build better future for the ASEAN community. Another main activity in AUYS 2016 is Rural Engagement. The purpose of this program is to expose participants to the rural entrepreneurships in Sumbawa, Indonesia. Participants are given opportunity to visit sustainable rural businesses e.g. traditional buffalo milk candy process, primary school and experiences milking process. All AUYS participants were then invited to watch horse riding show at Angin Laut Horse Racetrack. The event is unique because the jockeys are children under 10 years old. Page 4 of 35

5 UCTS students performed a traditional dance which is called Tarian Rampaian during the Gala Dinner and Cultural Performances alongside with different cultural performance from different ASEAN universities. The next host of AUSY 2017 will be hosted by De La Salle University Das Marinas, in the Philippines. Page 5 of 35

6 MOU Signing & Research Meeting with OM Materials (SARAWAK) Sdn Bhd, 3 rd March 2016 The MoU signing between UCTS and OM Materials Sdn. Bhd. The objective is to develop cooperation in the field of waste management and micro-silica and to collaborate in research and development and innovation activities. Page 6 of 35

7 MOU Signing with Hock Seng Lee Berhad, 16 th March 2016 Hock Seng Lee Berhad is a fully integrated marine engineering, civil engineering and building construction firm based in Kuching, Sarawak. It is renowned for its expertise in mass land reclamation and dredging as well as complex infrastructure works including tunnelling; bridge, road and flyover construction; flood mitigation; rural water supply and marine structures.this platform sets the stage for jointly Talent Development for UCTS students particularly for Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveyor students to be trained or exposed to technical know-how of challenging yet innovative building constructions. 8 UCTS Open Day (Entrepreneurs booth) - 1 st & 2 nd April 2016 UCTS Open Day was held for two days on 1 2 April, It was a big event for UCTS to promote the University to the public. On the same time, we opened booths to the public and the students to participate. Page 8 of 35

9 UCTS Open Day (Career booth) - 1 st & 2 nd April 2016 Companies that participated in the Open Day career booth for walk-in-interview were as follows: 1) Sarawak Labour Department 2) Premier Hotel 3) Rimbunan Sawit Berhad 4) Super Save Sdn Bhd Many applicants applied for job vacancies with various companies and it was a successful event. They aim to deliver efficiently and promptly, the best industrial products, services, technology and best pricing on merchandise. This platform sets the stage for jointly Talent Development for UCTS students particularly for Mechanical Engineering and Business Management students to be trained or exposed to technical know-how of challenging yet innovative industrial products. 15 ASEAN-CHINA Entrepreneur s Conference 2016 on 12 th -13 th May 2016, Kuching The ASEAN-China Entrepreneurs Conference 2015 & 2016 was a big conference and to provide a solid platform for networking and business opportunities among industries and SMEs from ASEAN and China. The conference was also a great source of information and updates on business, trade and commerce for the delegates particularly for the students. Page 15 of 35

18 MOU Signing with Selamat Jaya Sdn Bhd 20 th June 2016 Selamat Jaya Sdn Bhd, a registered electrical contractor with SESCO and various licence holders of Jabatan Kerja Raya Unit Pendaftaran Kontraktor (UPK), Pusat Khidmat Kontraktor (PKK), Perbendaharaan Malaysia Sarawak (FFO) and Constrcution Industry Development Board (CIDB). Its main activity is on electrical wiring and installation works. This platform sets the stage for jointly Talent Development for UCTS students particularly for Electrical Engineering students to be trained or exposed to technical know-how of challenging yet innovative industrial products. SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rimbunan Hijau Group to jointly implement a programme called Corporate Talent Development (CTD). UCTS vice-chancellor Professor Dato Dr Abdul Hakim Juri said UCTS was honoured to collaborate with the RH Group. Tan Sri Datuk Sir Tiong Hiew King had been to UCTS many times, and this time is very special and indeed a historical moment for us in UCTS, he said. We hope with the signing of MOU, we can work closer together to develop the human capital of this country and in other areas to benefit both organisations and the country. He said the collaboration would provide opportunities for students to undergo short term and long term internship at RH Group, collectively share on-ground expertise and experiences with students through industrial knowledge training modules or activities, and to help the students pay back their study loans upon working with the Group. 25 2 nd KDU International Student Entrepreneurship Conference 2016 on 24 th September 2016 at KDU University College,Utropolis Glenmarie, Selangor UCTS students and staff participated in a one day Conference at KDU University College, Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor. The conference was to inspire and to holistically equip the young leaders with knowledge of cultural entrepreneurship and how Cultural Enterprises use beliefs, customs and the arts as a second economy to develop financial stability from cultural activities. 29 MOU signing with icube Innovation Sdn Bhd 21 st October 2016 The MOU signing between UCTS and icube Innovation Sdn Bhd. The objective of the MoU is to provide mentoring, nurturing and leadership building to young entrepreneurs, to bridge the gap between entrepreneurs, corporate/private sectors, education institutions and government bodies. Also it acts as a platform for co-incubation and collaboration between members of both parties and also to facilitate and contribute to the larger economic plan for the State of Sarawak. 30 Sibu Startup Weekend in collaboration with icube Innovation, Unicity Hostel October 2016 A 3-days Startup Weekend Sibu where the students and public progressed through a series of modules in a learning-by-doing environment such as ideation, team formation, customer discovery, rapid prototyping and pitch workshops. On the first day, the participants have to pitch an idea, vote for their favourites, and form a team. For the second day, the participants have to Build Something Real which means all of them have to put their own talents to work, talked to the mentor and build a real product, team, and brand for execution in the real world or even just a portfolio. Finally, Launch! This is where the participants put their own efforts and put final touches on their presentation and state their case to the judges. Page 30 of 35

31 Startup Weekend Sarawak at Kuching 11 th - 13 th November 2016 Startup weekend is an intensive 54 Hours event which was organised by icube Innovation Sdn Bhd. The three days event started on Friday and ended on Sunday. Out of 14 teams, Juh! was the best business pitched by the judges. The team members of the winner were Ling Shyan Huo, Hii Sieng Ching and Sharon Siaw Hui Huei from UCTS and the team leaders were Iqrar Zahir B. Mohd. Nasir(Unimas) and Mr. Raden (SEB). Page 31 of 35

33 Industry Visit to Subur Tiasa Particleboard & Plywood Factory, Upper Lanang, Sibu 9 th November 2016 On the 9 th November, 2016, a total of 38 UCTS students had an educational tour to Subur Tiasa Particleboard Sdn Bhd and Subur Tiasa Plywood Sdn Bhd. They were welcomed by Mr. Wong Sie Kwong, Factory Manager of particleboard factory and Mr. Lee Hock Hin, Production Manager of plywood factory.
