2 Diya Foundation provides vocational training and sheltered employment to differently abled adults in Bangalore. DIYA S VISION: To see individuals with a disability and their families alive with dignity and pride in the present and operating with love, respect and confidence in the future. DIYA S MISSION Preethi at work in Diya s Candle unit To enrich the quality of life of differently-abled adults by training them in vocational skills and empowering them to live a fulfilling and productive life; The CEO shares Recently, actor Aamir Khan raised the issue of education and infrastructure for the disabled in India. He urged society to ensure that the disabled are educated, employed, productive, able to look after themselves and their families, thus contributing to the growth and wealth of the nation. We believe, Differently abled people are not surplus citizens. They can work, earn and be productive. Over the last 13 years, Diya has strived to provide them with training and employment. Our Annual Report, Discovering Abilities Creating Opportunities will give you a glimpse of the achievements of our people. We thank our clients, donors, volunteers, well-wishers and staff whose contribution and support has helped our Trainees discover their abilities and enabled Diya create opportunities for them. We urge you to invest into the lives of Diya s people, recognize their abilities and collaborate with us to see them lead productive lives. DIYA S HISTORY: Based in Bangalore, Karnataka, Diya Foundation was registered as a Vocational Training and Sheltered Workshop on 22nd March, A skill based training program that began with three students and one staff 13 years ago, now trains around 50 intellectually challenged adults and has 18 staff, six of them are Persons with Disabilities.

3 Highlights APRIL MARCH 2012 TRAINEES Trainees participated in the TCS World 10K 2011 and won the first prize in two categories, The Bombaat Brigade and The Green Crusader, winning Rs. 85,000/- towards our fund -raising efforts. Diya s Staff, led by Sendhil K., designed costumes for these events. STAFF The CEO attended a Project Planning Workshop in Nov 2011 and a workshop on Financial Planning and Management of NGOs with the Accounts Manager in Jan Physically challenged Staff participated in the 4km Wheelchair Race at the World 10K to raise funds for Diya. Shirley Metlin: Completed Certificate Course on MR; Sendhil V: Attended Common Purpose Navigator Program for Middle Management Leaders; Senior Supervisors trained as Job Coaches through a workshop conducted by Systematic Instruction Organisation in Nov Diya trainees at the TCS World 10K Race, 2011 (U.K) and Primalogue on design projects and with Pro Vision India, AMBA CEEIC and The Fishermen s Trust on training initiatives. DIYA S FUTURE Register a Self-Help Group in partnership with the parents of our trainees to initiate a Supported Employment Program. Start a Section 25 Company to provide livelihood options for the differently abled by employing them and marketing their products. Staff team, Abled and specially abled DIYA S CHALLENGES Building a sales and marketing network for products manufactured at Diya. Finding organizations willing to employ our Trainees within their set-up. Raising finances to set up a permanent resource center. DIYA S NEEDS Funds required to run the Vocational Training Project Rs. 20,00,000/- p.a. Initial investment to set up the Self Help Group Rs. 5,00,000/- VOLUNTEERS Volunteers from ANZ, Quintiles Technologies, Thomson Reuters, Goldman Sachs and 3M India Ltd., spent time with Diya s Trainees on various indoor and outdoor projects. NETWORKS Diya networked with Social Heart, Hundred Hands and Bangalore Cares for sales and fundraising, with Via Design DIYA FOUNDATION WAS THE FIRST NGO TO REGISTER WITH SOCIALHEART. 4 , Diyas focus for the year Pre-vocational Training Activities DISCOVERING ABILITIES AT DIYA S VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROJECT Diya s vocational training project takes every intellectually challenged individual through a six-month observation/learning period. They were trained on a variety of concepts in the Computer unit, on product designs and colors in the Candle, Paper and Screen Printing units, on production and packaging in the Chocolate unit and they potted plants in the Horticulture unit. They improved on their personal-social skills, participated in teamwork and gradually increased their production output. Trainees also participated in sports, outdoor visits and fund raising initiatives. 5 A JOB AND A FUTURE: Steven works from 9.30a.m 5.00p.m. at Diya. His ability in typing makes him a good data entry operator at the Sheltered Workshop. He works on a project for Tata Docomo, typing over 50 forms a day. A punctual, meticulous and keen worker, Steven says with great pride, What I earn is saved in a bank account. CREATING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH DIYA S SHELTERED EMPLOYMENT PROJECT Diya creates opportunities for employment through its Sheltered Workshop. After training at the Vocational Centre, Trainees join the workshop where they use their skills to work and earn. Last year, our work force created designer candles and a range of paper products, made exquisite chocolates and nurtured beautiful plants. Those in the Computer unit began work on data entry assignments for Tata Docomo, through Cameo Corporate Services Ltd. Employed intellectually challenged adults earned between Rs /- per month.
