2 Good people giving money to good causes. It s a vital part of what we do at Social Venture Partners. But we re facing big problems in our community, and money alone is not enough to solve them. That s why SVP goes beyond philanthropy. Both local and global, the SVP model is philanthropy rooted in your backyard. SVP Minnesota Partners invest time, money, and skills in nonprofits that are located in the Twin Cities. At the same time, we are part of an international network of givers, volunteers, leaders, and changemakers. Together our network has given more than $50 million and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to almost 550 nonprofits since Still growing, we have member organizations in 35 cities arounds the world with more ramping up. Learn more at svpmn.org.. Unlock & Unleash the Potential in You 2013 marked yet another year of growth and impact for our partnership and the nonprofit organizations we so proudly serve. This impact took many forms, from helping at-risk teens discover their true potential through debate, to developing the financial plan that helped significantly expand the capabilities of an urban bike shop providing internships and counseling to homeless youth. We even took time to focus on our own internal capacity-building, resulting in a new strategic plan that will allow us to greatly amplify our impact in 2014 and beyond. Our future looks truly bright. To all of my fellow partners that give so generously of themselves in support of the mission and causes we hold dear, I thank you. The work we do together is making a real difference in young lives, and we can all be rightfully proud of what we have accomplished to date and what we will achieve together in the years to come. If you re reading this report as a potential partner, I urge you to please consider joining our growing movement of citizen philanthropists. While your contributions as an SVP partner will most certainly help change the trajectory of life for countless at-risk youth in our community, I think you will quickly discover that the life most changed is your own. The social issues we are addressing are not trivial, nor is the veracity by which we will put our collective resources to work to tackle these problems. Please join us. Help us. Unlock and unleash the potential in you. Our community, and your own life, will be greatly enriched as a result. Thank you. Jeff Tollefson Chairman, SVP Minnesota Thank you to our Board & Staff Ron Anderson Steve Bloom Sarah Curfman Ellen Mitchell Gallagher Eric Jackson Marty Leestma Charlie Maxwell Jeff Tollefson Guff Van Vooren Pam Langseth, Executive Director

4 ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT / Strong Nonprofits, Better Results Strong Nonprofits Deliver Better Results It s that simple. Things like sound financial systems and up-to-date technology can mean the difference between reaching 500 or 5,000 people in need. That s why SVP works with nonprofits for several years, strengthening all the behind-the-scenes systems that help take their work to the next level. Over the past year, SVP Minnesota investees partnered with volunteers on consulting projects ranging from developing retail capacity for a bike shop to serving homeless youth to creating a marketing plan for a bilingual preschool. SVP Minnesota supported eight different nonprofit organizations including winners of the Minnesota Cup Social Entrepreneur Division. SVP Minnesota 2013 Investees: 3 Ring Breakthrough Twin Cities Brotherhood, Inc. Full Cycle Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery Joyce Preschool Minnesota Urban Debate League Minnesota Valley Action Council, Inc. Add that up, and in 2013 SVP provided local nonprofits with $148k In unrestricted grants $192k In additional donations from individual partners $65k Professional development & in-kind support $56k In volunteer time from skilled professionals BASED ON $100 PER HOUR $461k IN TOTAL SUPPORT TURNING $1 OF GRANT FUNDS INTO $3.20 OF NONPROFIT SUPPORT Since 2002 SVP MN has invested with 40 nonprofits giving more than $1.6 million and more than 16,500 volunteer hours to the Twin Cities nonprofit community.

5 BREAKTHROUGH TWIN CITIES / Investee since 2012 The Philanthropic Partners Program is designed for businesses that want to give back but have limited staff and expertise to do so. SVP MN provides training and tools for a Philanthropic Partner business to make a grant to a social venture of its choice. SVP MN provides our Philanthropic Partners a meaningful model for corporate philanthropy. The combination of giving your company s money and talent to develop a high-impact social venture is what makes the program so powerfully engaging. We thank Philanthropic Partner, Lubrication Technologies for investing in Breakthrough Twin Cities since SNAPSHOTS FROM BREAKTHROUGH TWIN CITIES 330 6th through 12th grade students 100% on-time high school graduation $26,000 in average college scholarships to Williams, St. Thomas, Stanford, Carleton, Tufts, and others 92% of students from low income families and 86% first generation to attend college THANK YOU TO OUR PHILANTHROPIC PARTNER Talk about impact! 6 CORPORATE PARTNER / Meristem Family Wealth Serving the Community Together Using Skills-Based Volunteering Charlie Maxwell, CEO of Meristem Family Wealth, joined Social Venture Partners in As a parent of triplets, Charlie spends his philanthropic time supporting organizations that impact kids, particularly those who have special needs. He has been an active corporate citizen in the Twin Cities as a past board member of Fraser, The Courage Foundation, and The One Percent Club. Currently Charlie is a member of the Children s Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors. His goal is to work alongside his clients for the betterment of all through community service. Charlie and Meristem are Corporate Partners with SVP Minnesota. Charlie became interested in SVP when one of its Partners, Jeff Tollefson, invited him to join. Charlie saw the opportunity to participate with a group of like-minded people to make the community a better place for kids. He knew his employees and partners at Meristem Family Wealth would benefit from this relationship as well. Meristem has a strong history of service to the community. The SVP platform provided Meristem with the unique opportunity to serve the community together using skills based volunteering a perfect fit! Since 2011, Charlie has engaged with SVP as a member of the recruiting committee, the alternative partnership team, and is now serving on the SVP Board of Directors. Charlie s employees have engaged in many projects with SVP as Lead Partners and members of the Due Diligence Team, Alternative Partnership, and Recruitment and Investment Committees. Meristem employees are or have been actively engaged with SVP investees such as Full Cycle, Genesys Works, and most recently Breakthrough Twin Cities. Being engaged by SVP has allowed me to plug in; to really fantastic organizations that have huge potential to make social change. As a younger professional who is very busy it is really hard to source opportunities like this and I feel it was mutually Being engaged by SVP has allowed me to 'plug in' to really fantastic organizations that have huge potential to make social change. Employee Meristem Family Wealth beneficial to get involved and apply my background and skills to a nonprofit I otherwise would not have even known about, states one of Meristem s employees. Meristem and its employees have benefitted greatly from their engagement with SVP. SVP s investees have, in turn, been recipients of many benefits because of Charlie Maxwell and the employees of Meristem. Charlie, the employees of Meristem, and Social Venture Partners look forward to working together to make a positive impact in the lives of at risk teens in our community. THANK YOU TO OUR CORPORATE PARTNER
