1 Successful Futures STEM, Careers and Enterprise Programme FREE to schools* NYBEP delivers a year-round menu of opportunities supports schools, colleges and businesses across Yorkshire, Humber, and the North East to develop programmes and partnerships that help to prepare young people for adult and working life. At the heart of our work is a focus on: STEM, supporting Careers Education and Enterprise skills that underpin economic well-being and the ability for young people to make a positive contribution to their own futures, as well as their school and communities. We work collaboratively with our partners, York, North Yorkshire and East Riding LEP and the Careers and Enterprise Company to ensure that local employers and partner organisations are at the front of our activities, helping to shape the offer and make an early contribution to their future workforce, as a result we are delighted to be able to announce a series of funded opportunities, FREE* for schools to access in the next academic year 2017/2018, supporting young people to have multiple encounters with employers. Successful Futures part funded by The Careers and Enterprise Company Successful Futures is a Careers, STEM and Enterprise programme which aims to bring together schools and businesses through a year-round structured programme of activity designed to support young people with skills development and knowledge for the workplace; future education choices; overcome barriers to learning and inspires them to plan for and achieve a successful future. NYBEP s Successful Futures is a blend of traded and funded activities. We work collaboratively with the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership and The Careers and Enterprise Company to provide opportunities that bring schools and employers together, facilitating an easy pathway to engage. Through funding received from The Careers and Enterprise Company we are pleased to offer schools (who meet the criteria) a year-round access to a menu of employer engagement opportunities for students (aged 11-19), that can be delivered as part of a drop down half/full day/assemblies including: Employer Speakers Mock interview practice to develop communication skills (yr10-13) Employability skills workshops (CV writing, application processes, team building, communication, money management sessions, on-line profile) Careers fairs and events Enterprise Challenges designed in partnership with employers Work Experience (this offer is limited) Important Information - This part funded offer is available to a limited number of schools across East Riding, Selby, Craven, Hambleton, Richmondshire, Harrogate, Ryedale and York. Schools must meet the criteria set by the funders.
2 To register your interest/find out more using the subject header Successful Futures The Employability Charter, funded through ESIF The Employability Charter aims to sign up employers to commit to supporting schools with programmes/activities in areas across York, North Yorkshire and East Riding. The role of NYBEP is to coordinate area wide events for schools, engage the employers who sign up to the Charter and continue to facilitate employer engagement in schools in the contract delivery areas across the next academic year. The areas that we are funded to support are East Riding, Scarborough, York, Ryedale, Selby, Craven, Hambleton & Richmondshire. If so, us the dates, times, Year Group and type of support requested and we will circulate this to the employers already signed up to the charter. To find out how your school can be involved and benefit from this FREE offer please using the subject header Employability Charter Successful STEM Futures, funded by Sirius Minerals for NY Coast and Ryedale Schools only. As part of Sirius Minerals Planning Application to build a new Potash Mine that will, when fully operational, create over 1500 new jobs, with most of these in the STEM sector - NYBEP is commissioned for the next 10 years to promote positively STEM through careers and STEM activity programmes for schools across the NY Coast and Ryedale. Employer Brokerage: This is the first year of funding and our offer this year is: supporting schools to engage with STEM Employers to support in school activity engaging more STEM employers in area wide events, such as Scarborough Engineering Week, Opportunity Knocks, Successful Futures Careers Event. developing campaigns to support the area wide events, for example STEM Employer Speakers in school pre-event as well as campaigns that promotes STEM during national weeks, such as National Careers Week, National Science Week, National Apprenticeship Week. STEM and Enterprise Challenges Co-designed with employers Across this academic year we will provide opportunities for schools/colleges to engage in STEM Challenges which will be co-designed with Employers. 3 Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge for Schools Project (ASK), funded by SFA NYBEP is funded to provide schools with access to impartial information sessions on Apprenticeships and Traineeships on behalf of the National Apprenticeship Service. KS4 & Post 16/Teachers Schools can access, FREE of charge, delivered by us and our network: a workshop/assembly/lesson to students Sign up for a Live Broadcast - think of it as a flash assembly! support with registering/applying on the Find an Apprenticeship website school career events CPD Session for teachers to update their knowledge and ultimately becoming your schools Apprenticeship Champion. The ASK project is aimed at working with teachers, careers advisers, parents and governors, alongside other key partners, to support schools to meet their statutory duties regarding the provision of impartial IAG, specifically in relation to apprenticeships and traineeships. sam@nybep.org.uk for further information Check out: dedicated to making it easy for teachers/career advisors to access the latest information about apprenticeships. The ASK project is delivered nationally and NYBEP are contracted to support all secondary schools/colleges, York, North Yorkshire, East Riding, Humber, NE & N Lincs. KS3-KS4 Solar Boat Challenge In partnership with The Rotary Club of York Vikings, schools are invited to build a solar boat that will complete a lap of our pool in the fastest time. Schools can preregister to apply for their free kits (max 3 per school) The final will be held at Inspirations 2018, Yorkshire Air Museum. Please events@nybep.org.uk using header Solar Boats for further information. All kits issued on a first come basis and will be available after February half term. KS3-KS5 Co-designed Employer Enterprise Challenges Across 2017/18 academic year we will be engaging with schools to take part in Enterprise Challenges, co-designed with employers. NYBEP are working in partnership with employers to deliver brand-new STEM and Enterprise Challenges that will take place over the year and is free to schools. Delivered in school by NYBEP as: Part of a drop down half/full day Launch Assembly Introduction to the Challenge in a lesson
4 Challenges will run all year and culminate at Inspirations 2018 schools are invited to registered their interest in taking part via Hot off the Press: Do your students have what it takes to enter the Griffins Nest? NYBEP with support from Northern Gas Networks and Sirius Minerals invite teams of learners to take part in this year s Griffins Nest Challenge. A FREE Business and Enterprise Challenge. The Brief To come up with a new product or service that will benefit the local community. Inspirations 2018 The BIGGEST Celebration of STEM in Education. Inspirations is a great FREE annual event dedicated to getting young people aged excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) as well as innovation and enterprise. We are inviting you to join us at this major event. Inspirations brings together STEM in a fun and interactive environment, linking classroom learning with real career opportunities. Last year over 1,000 students from across 40 schools took part in the event. At the core of this event is a real celebration of achievement we put young people at the heart of this event, displaying their ideas, projects and prototypes created within education or outside to our expert judges recruited from business, HE and other partners. Last year 100 projects were showcased and over 50 awards were made to students at the event by our judges and sponsored by businesses and partner organisations. The best projects will be nominated to go forward to the National Big Bang UK Science and Engineering Competition KS2-KS5 Last year we were delighted to team up with York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, local employers and organisations including Drax Power, Doosan, FERA, Dale Power, Nestlé, RAF, Army, Navy, Sirius Minerals, Network Rail, GHD Ltd, Portakabin, and the Rotary Club as well as our education partners Askham Bryan College, York College, University of York, York St John and Coventry University and many more. This year we aim to make the event BIGGER and BETTER! When and where is it? Thursday 28 th June 2018, 10:00 14:30, Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington, York. What can we expect? Schools/colleges can attend the event and take part in the many hands on activities, find out information on STEM careers from local employers or come along and showcase any STEM projects produced as part of the curriculum or outside school. Over 50 awards will be given on the day to celebrate our young people s achievements in STEM. 28 th June 2018, Yorkshire Air Museum Open to schools across Yorkshire and Humber.
5 KS3-5 Scarborough Science and Engineering Week 2018 Scarborough Spa, 9, 10, 11 October ,10 October dedicated to students aged What is Scarborough Science and Engineering Week 2018? The annual Scarborough Science and Engineering Week (SSEW2018) is the biggestever employer-led 3-day event designed to show young people how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are so important in the real world. It aims to inspire students to consider the exciting opportunities that studying and working in STEM open to them. Last year over 3000 young people attended the event. What can we expect? Through our action packed 3-day event, over 3500 young people aged 7-19 and their teachers and parents/carers will benefit from taking part in SSEW it has something for everyone, from hands-on activities all delivered by leading businesses, universities, and others, to discovering the wealth of exciting career opportunities available to them in science, technology and engineering. This year we are engaging with more employers who will talk about STEM careers as well as showing young people how STEM is relevant in the workplace. SSEW 2018 will host one evening sessions aimed at engaging families. Secondary Schools are invited to attend one of the timed sessions with their students on the dedicated Secondary & Post 16 days 9 th and 10th October Places go fast and given on a first come, first serve basis.
