2 Traffic Fatalities In 2015, 35,092 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States, ending a 5-decade trend in declining fatalities with a 7.2 percent increase in deaths in 2014 (32,744). Of the 35,092: 48 % were unbuckled 57 % of the nighttime fatalities were unbuckled Alcohol- impaired accounted for 29 % of overall fatalities

6 Regional Operations and Program Delivery Responsibilities Direct State highway grants and programs Promote DOT/NHTSA priorities Guide States with problem identification, performance measurement Share best practices & innovative tools in highway safety Provide technical assistance on mission critical activities, including State highway safety plans Provide NHTSA training to Federal and State highway safety professionals Provide stewardship and oversight for grant programs Provide programmatic and fiscal oversight for NHTSA grants and grant-funded programs 6
7 NHTSA Grants Management & Operations Administer NHTSA s grant programs, nearly $600 million annually to State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs) Draft legislative proposals, regulations and procedures Collaborate with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and other National, State and local safety organizations Act as a liaison between HQ and Regional Offices Provide training to NHTSA field and State highway safety officials 7
