Responding to Grant Funder Policies on Research Dissemination April 2, 2015 Michelle Armstrong Amber Sherman
Agenda Explain the White House Directive on Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research Examples of Policies How to Respond to Open Publication Requirements How to Respond to Open Data Requirements Examples of Open Proposal Statements

Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH- Funded Research Revised Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH- Funded Research We the People petition White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Directive February 3, 2005 December 26, 2007 May 20, 2012 February 22, 2013
Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH- Funded Research NIH-funded investigators are requested to submit to the NIH National Library of Medicine s (NLM) PubMed Central (PMC) an electronic version of the author s final manuscript upon acceptance for publication, resulting from research supported, in whole or in part, with direct costs from NIH February 3, 2005
Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH- Funded Research Revised Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH- Funded Research The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication February 3, 2005 December 26, 2007
We believe in the power of the Internet to foster innovation, research, and education. Requiring the published results of taxpayer-funded research to be posted on the Internet in human and machine readable form would provide access to patients and caregivers, students and their teachers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and other taxpayers who paid for the research. Expanding access would speed the research process and increase the return on our investment in scientific research. We the People Access2Research petition White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Directive February 3, 2005 December 26, 2007 May 20, 2012 February 22, 2013

Reviewing a Publishing Agreement Can you view the copyright transfer agreement before you submit your manuscript? Is it a license or a complete transfer of copyrights? Does the journal offer an Open Access option? Does that option cost money? Can you post an electronic copy of your work in ScholarWorks? On a personal or other websites? If so, which version? Does the publisher require an embargo period before you can post copies of your work online? If so, how long?
